Beckers Chalets

Great place to work, definitely recommend! Met some of the best people out at Becker’s, I wouldn’t have wanted to spend my summer anywhere else. Beckers is a very family oriented and caring community, with the mountains all around and being outside of town, it’s lowkey and comfortable; truly feels like home. This years team was great, I’ve never experienced a group of people that care for each other so much. Being out there can definitely help with one’s mental health as well, there’s always someone to talk to and no such thing as loneliness there. Adjusting to the new environment can be hard but everyone is so friendly and makes you feel welcomed and belonged. Good staff accom; dorm style, mostly young people looking to get away or gain a new experience. Easy to save money, good incentives in the end, although increased pay throughout the season would be nice. Job description is correlative to the job itself, busy/routine work, can get repetitive. Very difficult to find good staff members, a lot this year called in sick hungover, adding more work onto the others, some lack respect, some just being unmotivated and being completely useless to a team so they don’t put up with that and that’s what I like, by the end of the season, they’re probably short staffed but the solid/proficient staff members are left. Good management overall, trustworthy hierarchy; conflict is dealt with asap and a solution is determined. Only complaint, cheap with overtime, rushed on busy days to be done by 5 so very little OT, more stress to get done. Overall best summer of my life, felt like being at camp. I’d go back anyday. The work is the work, the people there are what really matters, you make and end your day so just have fun.

Enjoyable parts: Working and living with friends, beautiful views all around, staff bbqs, lots of free time to explore around Jasper 

Hardest parts: Being understaffed during peak season, adjusting to the environment, having one day off, leaving 

I’d recommend having a vehicle out there too


Becker`s Chalets is a good place to work at. It`s located directly next to the Athabasca River what I really enjoyed, cause you have a great view while working. 
The workers are supposed to clean the cabins in teams of 2 or 3 depends on the size of the cabin. There are golfcarts that are used to drive around the property. Workers have to load and unload them with all the stuff you need for a cabin (linens, amenities...). You work 6 days a week with one day off. 
I`ve learned that housekeeping is a really hard job and you have to move a lot. Even on days when you are tired and exhausted and your energy is less you have to power through work what can be a challenge sometimes. Staff Accomodation is provided for workers what is really nice, but you must be aware that you live very minimalistic. You share a room with another person what means that you dont always have privacy. The house can be very dirty sometimes, cause lots of other people live there together and Wifi is not really working most of the time. The blankets dont get washed what is a no-go for me and simple stuff like a haidryer is not provided. You also have to pay for laundry. 
I really enjoyed living together with many people, cause you can make friends easily and its very fair that you get your rent back if you stay the whole season. 
I really appreciated that I got a very fast answer after my job interview and it was easy to get the job. I also like that you dont really need experience in housekeeping or front desk and everything is shown to you and you have the chance to learn. 

Becker's Chalets is a great place to work if you want to meet interesting people to spend the summer with. The fact that Becker's is 5km outside of Jasper means that you will end up growing close with everyone you're working with. The pay is decent (by Canadian standards) and the opportunity to get all of your rent back at the end of the summer is a great incentive. 

The job is what it is - there are no alternatives and no prospect for career advancement as it is only open in the summer and it is family run. The housekeeping management are great and do genuinely want the best for their employees. The family that owns Becker's can come off as being harsh and uncaring but in hindsight they weren't that bad. The big staff house either needs air-con or needs to be renovated to allow for airflow as it is usually extremely hot and uncomfortable. The internet is also almost always unusable which is both could also be interpreted as a positive as it really forces you to spend time with your colleagues and in nature.

During my time there, the current employees managed to bargain with management to get a $0.50 pay rise and three days off a fortnight instead of just two. The job is very demanding but at least you're working with a partner, or even a third or fourth person. The third day off a fortnight really helped a lot as most people are there on a working holiday and actually want the opportunity to enjoy Jasper.

Typical day at work can actually range from fast to slow depending on amount of teams and checkouts that day. During busy season, it’s around 50-70 CO, but about 10 cabins per team. The busier days make you more tired, so the next day may take longer. 

Working in housekeeping and laundry, I’ve learned how to be extra fast with my work but maintaining quality. It also helps in your own lifestyle, teaches you how to clean your own house and clothes. 

Management is well organized, but sometimes don’t understand fully what’s happening with the workload, so sometimes their perception of workers/work can be diminishing. BUT, that is only sometimes, preferably for laundry attendants. 

Workplace culture can be very fun if you get along with many types of people and are easy going. Constantly are rewarded for your hard work, especially if you are going above and beyond. 

Hardest part of the job is staying consistent with energy, for example, Sundays tend to be super busy and very fast-paced, then Monday you are very tired as it is labour work. 

Most enjoyable is getting to see a dirty cabin, go to a perfectly cleaned cabin. It’s satisfying and rewarding to see how good your work is. 

If you are looking to spend the whole summer in Jasper and have a car this is a good place for you. If you don't have a car and are not sure about spending the whole summer in Jasper then you might want to check out other places. 
 As housekeepers we mostly worked in teams of two; while the work itself was super easy the work load for the teams was oftentimes very different; while some teams would finish their list of cabins  quickly, others would finish very slowly. Following that, the faster teams would have to help out the slower teams and/or in addition to helping with stay overs. As a result the faster teams had a much higher work load. While helping is obviously not a problem, it has nothing to do with team work when some people do a lot more work than others. And as everybody still signed out at the same time, everybody would get the same amount of money for a very different amount of work. It was also visible that slower workers/teams would get "easier" and usually faster to clean cabins. Six days of work - yet never full amount of possible hours. 
Again, this place is best when you like to spend the whole summer in Jasper; staff accommodations are good; property well kept; housekeeping management nice

My experience at Becker's Chalets was upsetting. Upper Management is unprofessional and treats staff poorly. While your typical day at work is easy (for the most part you work with your friends and listen to music), not being able to escape the negativity that is brought on my staff accommodation and the owners is difficult. You never really escape from work. They provide a rent back and bonus which is put in place to keep people there. While this is a good incentive, it really is not worth it for how you are treated. A few of the supervisors were great, but they have zero control because management will not let go. There is tons of favourtism and the culture is not set. They state that they treat people like family, but having a few BBQ's throughout the season really does not suffice for how you are treated. The owner and her daughter scream continuously and saying it is a cultural different can only go so far. They do not listen when you explain issues which are clearly present and push everything under the rug. All in all, I would not recommend working here. 

Each day i would wake up and because i live in the staff housing i would just walk down to the laundry room and start my day of work which included cleaning, making beds, and taking care of the cabins and the guests staying in my section. I learned many good skills for both work habits and for personal cleaning abilities and will now properly know how to clean a house. As for management, they are the kindest and most caring and understanding people i have ever met. My co-workers may havve some problems with one another but at the end of the day, we live with eachother and geet over it. Te hardest part of this job is keeping a record of excelent perfection and not forgettig to do something in a cabin by accident. And lastly, the most enjoyable part of thhs job is being in the mountais all day surrounded by the beauty that is Jasper National park and i get to work with some of the most amazing people from all around the world.

Becker's is an amazing place to work. As it is family owned and operated it can be a very different atmosphere for some. Management and the owners are absolutely amazing, being there for a couple of years, I saw a mix of everything. 
Problems (whether with a staff member or a guest) were handled efficiently and with care. 
The priority of the owners is truly their staff members. They will give multiple chances if you continue to show up and put an effort into your work. 
The summers can be very busy, however they do the best to relieve that stress, with monthly staff BBQ potlucks, games and appreciation weeks. 
The work weeks can be long, being that they are 6 days a week, however that is something you get used to. 
I truly enjoyed my time at Beckers and wish it could have been longer, but to advance my career it was time for me to leave. 

I enjoyed working Front Desk very much, welcoming people,doing check-ins and check-outs,phone call and emails. 
I learned to professionalize my social skills. When I had a question, management was always there for me in the best friendly way what was super supportive.  My co-workers were the best. It was fun and always cooperative.  Sometimes it can be stressfull when the phone does not stop ringing but then it is again so nice giving a good costumer service to guests who are happy arriving at Becker' Chalets what I really enjoyed.
I also worked one day in the week in housekeeping what I really liked as a nice change to a more physical work,beeing outside, driving a golf cart,stripping or cleaning cabins and working together with the nice people from the housekeeping-team.

6 days of the week I wake up 20 minutes before 9 and take the very short walk to the office. The work was hard physically but the hours weren't long which helped, but still wore me down after time. I learned about how to get along and work well in a team and learn how to be efficient and keep on pace. Living and working with everyone was nice if you were friends but can get tiring. The managers and owners are very kind to the staff. A perk of the job is the monthly staff barbecues which gives everyone a chance to have a free meal together and have fun. the most enjoyable part of the job is the location for sure. Beckers is a short drive outside of the jasper townsite which lets us see lots of wildlife and a beautiful view of the river and mountains.
