Bento Sushi

The job is easy but at the same time tiring. If you work at their commissary, you will find the process repetitive  but chaotic. Thanks to their Quality Control Manager who was raised from Burma. I am not sure what her qualifications are but she is racist, ego maniac, as if I have applied as a dishwasher. She will find fault at you 1st day, 1st day!!! She is so proud of how she cleans the dishes like big time!! I think she has a degree in dish washing!

I believe she was raised from down below like hundred feet under. Some of the Burmese staff who follows her got the same attitude. They have the audacity to talk down on you but they don't even speak the English language. Would you imagine, you are trying to understand what they are talking about so you can contribute right away,  in their minds, you are stupid for not getting what they are trying to tell you and at the end of the day they will decide that you can't  catch up. In short, you need to learn that five is pronounced as 
 fa (literally) and that red is pronounced as re and that green is pronounced as gri (that's it, no n) (PS I wanted to stay on this job so i'm keeping my cool).

The pay is not high. I took the job because I thought they are fellow Asians, I will feel comfortable around them.  Big mistake!

If you want to succeed here, you need to speak Karen, their native tongue or else you will be mistreated.

Don't tell me I didn't warn you.

For the Quality Control Manager, are you not getting sick of your own air? You breath arrogance!!!!!!. NO wonder the supervisor said you are mean!

Honestly speaking, I cannot say anything positive about my experience working here.

The manager was not great at communicating and I was often left unsure of what I should and shouldn't be doing. 
It felt impossible to finish preparing everything on time. As well, payments for online training and working overtime were sometimes
missed. I would advise you keep track of your hours very carefully. It feels like working overtime is expected but without pay. 

It is very busy with little to no time to take a break. The amount of work required is impossible to finish on time,
especially as a new worker. 

Once all the ingredients are prepared at the start of the shift, the rest of the time is spent rolling sushi, preparing other menu 
items and cleaning up.

I love working for Bento Sushi. It's essentially part time, so it comes with no benefits BUT the pay is good. The hours revolve around how long it takes you to do your work, so you can make the day as short or as long as you need to. Great locations, amazing supervisor, fun people to work with.

I find it cool that I can tell people that I roll and package sushi for a living, even though it gets a little repetitive, it's still fun!

I love my supervisor, she is super open, listens to me and is very understanding. 

Could use a few more hours, but again it's a part time job. Hours are split between all the employees, so it's not something you can live off of alone. Hours are super easy to have a flexible second job with though!

I have worked at Bento Corporate for a little over 3 months and the transition has been fantastic. I was a little anxious at first as I had switched industries recently, but I had a fantastic on-boarding experience.
I was given time to learn the ins and outs of the business while slowly taking on more of my responsibilities. I like the way the leadership team handles work calls, how they speak to people, and how the general day-to-day is not stressful. Everyone I have spoken with/work with has been polite, accommodating and understanding. Overall it has been a great experience so far. 
There are deadlines and regular urgent/non-urgent matters, but it never feels overwhelming and I am confident that I can speak to someone about support when/if I need it.


The job itself was alright. Typical western style sushi. Make mostly rolls, put them in hard plastic boxes, serve rice/noodles for linch, prepare ingredients for next day.

Problem is with the staff. Racist team leaders who show clear favouritism to their own background. Mine basically undercut my hours worked, aka stole my pay. And if you prove yourself competent, they will cause drama behind your back and force you to resign because they are afraid to lose their job.

I am actually Japanese and know sushi more than they ever will, but the racist team leader still created all that drama and basically convinced the management to make me quit.

Bottom line, don't even bother with this place.

This company is bad to work for because the management is frustrated, and they are mean to their workers and snap at them for no reason. The training is awful, there is a huge amount of paperwork that really doesn't mean anything except to cover liability. There isn't nearly enough time in a day to pull of everything they expect, plus the safety paperwork and then Covid. Pay isn't great, no discounts or lunches either. No tips. Not only that, but everything always changes from one manager or team leader to another. There are quirks that each individual prefers and if that particular  quirk isn't observed, there is friction. Essentially, the company is broken.

Food safe is a joke. Getting paid for the hours that you work for is another joke. No time for toilet because too much workload. No pay for OT but you need to OT to meet the production target. 

Sometimes the working hours are unstable as well. 99.99% of the time you work alone, and this is what you need to do: rolling sushi and getting ready all other side dishes and stuff on showcase, preparing for all ingredients for next day staff, goods receipt from delivery, cleaning at the end of shift. Friendly remind again: you do these tasks all alone.

The only good thing is the senior staffs, they treat you nice and are willing to teach you patiently. Maybe because they also suffered from what you are suffering, so they understand your terrible situation.

This company selectively hires immigrants and may only pay for six hours of work even if you've worked for ten hours. They have inspectors, and if your immigration status is a motivation for working there, you should be cautious. Failing the inspection might result in the employer demanding a substantial amount, possibly a few thousand Canadian dollars, to cover their losses. I heard this from someone I know. Additionally, they might restrict the use of certain materials like plastic wrap due to cost considerations, unless the supplies are provided by the supermarket you work for. Overall, it's the most stressful part-time job I've had, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless immigration is an urgent concern.

I started in Bento as a part-time sushi chef and then referred to finance team starting from A/P. I was then promoted to accountant position. Bento   provides employee development opportunity and very supportive team. I grew up in Bento from a freshly graduate to be an experienced and confident accountant. The corporate culture is very good and warm. I will not forget we have so many sweet and happy moments with Bento, such as festival celebrating, office team birthday celebrating, annual Bento party, etc. Everyone enjoys in this Bento big family. It is a wonderful journey for me in Bento for over 10 years.

There’re many things inside that cannot be shared here, but generally it’s good for a part time job, there’s very little responsibility for part time employees. I tried to leave an honest comment which I believe is the thing that most job seekers want to know but it was restricted. The experience varies from area to area and highly depends on the managers/supervisors. Some are really poor at their job.
If you want a full time job, I don’t recommend going here, or at least don’t go to London. Full time workers have so many responsibilities and things to do. Wage is almost the same for everyone and minimum.
