The days are busy, like all places in health care. You have the typical resident to Nurse ratio. They are always implementing new programs and processes and theres a new policy every time you turn around. The last few years theyve been moving away from paper with their electronic charting, electronic medication admin program.  Nursing assessments are slowly changing to electronic also. HCAs have too much charting in their POC program and often complete charting on their breaks or rush to finish up at end of their shift it seems. 

There are A LOT of emails from top of the organization, newsletters and updates, which made it very difficult to stay on top of what was happening at your own site, emails from people in Calgary youve never met, and likely never would. There are always announcements that someone has left or a new manager or executive or leader of some department you didn't know existed had been added. Seems very, very, top heavy and low insight that to improve the care being provided at the front line level those at an executive level shouldn't be so excessive. It doesnt seem that the Calgary leads realize with a happy front line staff, not those that literally run from one task to the next, youll have happier residents and families. All of the Bethany website pictures show people from Calgary, like its the only site that exists or at least the only important site, and they have rural sites with people that have worked there for years.  

Bethany has some great supports in place, chaplain, social work, and a good recreation program that you can also go to when you have resident problems to solve or things that residents need additional help with. They have a cool student program in place with RDC so at times there are  students to help with care, only wish it was all of the time. Bethany CollegeSide has a bus for the residents so not always depending on public transit so that's a big help. The managers are both RNs and seems to care about the residents and staff,  they follow up if you take something to them that you are not happy with about new nurses that aren't carrying their weight or aren't following the care plans.
Ive worked at the hospital for a few years and rarely even see the unit managers of the units I worked on, but at CollegeSide you see them all the time, and they are approachable and check in without breathing down your neck. They have a good volunteer team that do lots of nice things for the residents, and they help with feeding or taking residents on outings, walks or other activities. There is a small store that the Volunteer Lead runs that raises money for the residents activities or things for the residents on the units. You can find some cool things there. They have pets for the residents that live on a few of the units and staff can take their Dogs to visit the residents too as long as their pets are pre-approved.  The majority of nurses are really great to work with, you have a few lazy nurses that try to pull rank but most are really good and caring and of course I have seen how the union protects the lazy ones and how it affects the good staff when they have to work twice as hard but its only a few and that type of things is everywhere you work in healthcare or not. Overall its a nice place to work if you take the time to get to know everyone and what they do there.

Bethany Calgary has been completed ruined by the current administrator. She has driven out all previous care managers who were all wonderful, caring and highly skilled. We now have managers who are completely inexperienced because the current administrator wanted to make sure she replaced the old managers with people she could mold and manipulate. People that wouldn't question her and would just fall in to line doing as she wishes. Not only managers have been driven out but other staff members that she simply didn't like from various other departments. The comments on here where HR says they're sorry people have had a bad experience and to reach out to them with details is a show and an attempt to salvage their very negative image and reputation. HR and corporate staff already know how the current administrator treats people and chooses to turn a blind eye. Many staff members have attempted to voice their concerns to management and HR since the current administrator came in to place. They did nothing to stop the mass exit of employees who had been there for years instead choosing to stand by the poor behaviour of the administrator. Moral is low, people walk through hallways with their heads down. Current administrator removed any kind of rewards once given to the staff for hard work and recognition of service. Workloads are very heavy. Organization is top heavy and floor staff suffers from budget cuts frequently. CEO is not example of a leader but an example of how not to lead. Clients are lovely and probably one of the only reasons people continue to work there which is for the residents. It's certainly not for the leadership and culture of the building that people choose to come to work everyday. Sadly, this place used to have a great reputation and now no matter where you go or who you talk to, if they've heard of Bethany Calgary it's nothing but negative feedback.

Horrible management throughout the yrs, never got better.  No support from management and try taking holidays in the summer.. ya right. Work load is ridicous. Must be a servant to the residents but also get all your paperwork done... which there is no time for. Expected to stay over with no pay to finish. Try everything in their power to get away with no paying OT (even when u work 8hrs OT), not give advancement in position or just general respect. There is no where to advance.. if ur an hca thats it for you. If your an lpn, your an lpn. They expect lpns to work for a low wage but do the same workload as an rn.
Hire a bunch of unskilled/ uneducated employees and rely on the older employees to train them. As an older employee watch your back, you are responsible for your training even if they don;t listen to you and do what they want. Be careful on how you walk into work in the am, as you are judged and "on shift" as soon as you step on the unit. Many times I got to work and instantly got bombarded from the previous shift. There is no respect from employee to employee, everyone is out for themselves. Employees do everything in their power to do as little work as they can, and then judge you for getting your work done. Would never recommend anyone to work here.
I can count on one hand the number of amazing, talented, bright, caring, honest, hardworking employees. And i feel bad for them everyday they are subjected to going to work.

A typical day at work in Bethany Care Society was when me and my partner were transferring a Resident from bed to the wheelchair with a ceiling lift. At a point during the transfer, the lift stopped working, and the Resident was still hanging up on the lift, we remained calm so that the Resident would not notice or feel any problem, but I gave my partner sign to rush and call our supervisor.  Our  supervisor rushed in immediately and assisted us in rescuing the situation.

From that incidence, I learnt that it's a always very important to have two or more persons assistance when you are doing transfer with a mechanical lift. Secondly, nobody should raise any panic when there is any dangerous situation so that Residents would not be scared.

Bethany has very good management. The interests of the staff, Residents and family is always considered at equilibrium by the management.

Co-workers are very good team spirited, and always protect each other.

The hardest part of this job, to me particularly, is always having to welcome new Residents, To me, it is hard because, it takes compassion, patience and empathy to get the new Residents settle in the Facility which is their new home. it is hard though, but the feelings are very much welcomed by me.

The most enjoyable part of the job is when I find new Residents happily settled and participates in most of the activities they were enjoying during their youthful lives as well as in their old homes.    .

The executive leadership team at Bethany show a complete and utter lack of respect and support for any of the head office staff.  In fact the CEO often shows complete contempt for anyone who is not an RN or HCA.

The support staff at the corporate office has gone through a nearly complete turnover in the previous 18 months, and still executive management refuses to change their ways.  The HR team in particular has turned over the entire team, some positions more than once in that same time span.  The CEO openly castigating a team on a town hall, in front of all corporate employees is unacceptable.

There is far more work than can reasonably expected to be completed, and tasks are often met with obstruction from senior leadership rendering them impossible.  There is no appreciation whatsoever from senior leadership and they all enjoy staying hidden in their offices, or only socializing in their own clique.  An overhaul of the entire team is needed in order to make the corporate team successful, including but not limited to the CEO, COO, and CFO.

Their handling of work from home and return to office protocols were embarrassing.  Senior leaders would openly question managers if a subordinate was not at their desk on any given day.

It's time for all of them to get with the times.

I have worked at Bethany Calgary for over 20 years and have seen a lot changes in my time but the last few years have been pure chaos.  Layoffs, FTE cuts, hiring freezes, working short staffed all with resident cases continuing to get more complex. The worst is the treatment of staff by the site Adminstrator.  Staff are publically berated, humiliated and spoken to like we know nothing. I know many staff have reached out to head office about their concerns of bullying and disrespectful treatment from management, but nothing gets done.  They would rather protect dysfunctional managers than listen to the people who actually care for the residents.
In the year and a half that new Administrator has been in place, she has driven out almost entire site management team, some of them having been at Bethany for over 20 years.  We used to have Care Service Managers that were inspirational and motivating, they cared the residents and staff.  Now we have inexperienced managers and its the residents who suffer from the loss od experience, knowledge and wisdom.
It is truly sad what is happening at Bethany.

I had a great experience working with this company. The work environment was professional, supportive, and friendly. Management always treated employees with respect and encouraged teamwork and growth. I learned many valuable skills during my time there, including communication, problem-solving, and handling responsibilities professionally. 

The company maintained a positive workplace culture where employees felt appreciated for their hard work and dedication. My colleagues were cooperative and helpful, which made the job enjoyable and motivating every day. I also appreciated the opportunities to learn new things and improve my confidence and experience. 

Overall, working with this company was a very rewarding experience for me. I am thankful for the knowledge, support, and professional growth I gained during my time there. I would definitely recommend this company to others looking for a positive and growth-oriented workplace with a strong and supportive team environment.

Poor, poor place to work. 
Management at all levels is poor but especially management out of corporate office. They don't support their staff. They talk the talk but they don't know how to walk it. Workloads are overwhelming and there's no support to you. Everything is a priority to them and it's not a realistic or healthy work environment. Next to no resources available to you, everything falls on your lap. Many new initiatives that they want rolled out over night. Roll outs are poor, they push things out without having buy in, organization, plans etc. 
No trust, no autonomy, no independence. Micromanaging, accusations and gossip is how this company runs.
Just do. not. work. here. Until they have a huge shift of people starting from the top, nothing will change.

I loved working at Bethany Care Society! 
We were having issues with an extremely aggressive resident in the locked unit who jeopardized self, resident and staff safety. I, along with other nurses, worked hard encouraging staff to chart on all behaviours in order to get this resident a psychiatric evaluation. I had the opportunity to present all the issues we were having on the unit to management alongside the support of one the family and of one of the house doctors, which got the process rolling to get the proper help this resident needed. I felt that management was supportive with ensuring we had a safe working environment and a safe home for the residents. I am proud to have been an LPN at this location in Sylvan Lake, AB!

I really enjoy working the night shift with my coworkers because we get along and support each other. I do not have much difficulty working on the unit because I have upgraded my skills as a Health unit Coordinator and find that these skills carry me through my shifts. As far a the management there does not seem to be anyone in particular to go to and sometimes even if you do go to your manager you don't get any support from them. I have learned much at the Bethany Care Society on my own and a typical day would be starting my shift with report and taking care of the residents on that unit. We do rounds every hour on the hour and answer call bells throughout the night. We change residents, reposition them and assist them to the washroom.
