I was called on April20/15 to interview for the position of Accreditation Services Consultant the following day. Not a lot of time to prepare but I thought that the interview with the Manager, Accreditation Services (accompanied by the VP of Operations), went well. At the end of the interview, the Accreditation Services Manager shook my hand and stated that she would be calling me in the next few days. That didn't happen. After a few of days went by, I was still in a positive frame of mind and hopeful of a promising response. After a week or so, I wasn't nearly so confident about a positive response, but a response nonetheless. After two weeks, I still thought that they were engaged in a process of due diligence, after all, this was the Better Business Bureau and one would assume that there were probably many applicants. After three weeks, I wanted to call but didn't want appear to be pushy or jeopardize my chances. After four weeks, I'm thinking - do I really even want to work for this company. For an organisation that pertains to live by AND demand of their members the "BBB Standards For Trust", I have to seriously question, and so might you, as to whether they even operate by their very own set of standards. Indeed, the Manager of Accreditation Services' stated "Favorite BBB Standard for Trust" is "Embody Integrity" which she quotes is ".....my personal compass.....on a daily basis". I notice that the position of Accreditation Services Consultant is still open and available on Indeed.ca as of today June 28th, 2015......more than 2 months after the interview. It was my general belief, assumption and natural instinct that the Better Business Bureau was indeed 'Better' - a standard of excellence as it were - a benchmark of achievement. The only reason that I'm writing this is that other people probably had the same thought. Well - "on a daily basis", it's Day 68, and someone's "compass" isn't true. I am still waiting for a call, if only to apologise.

I came to work at the BBB because I am a highly ethical person and thought my values would mirror those of this employer. I had to leave because this was not the case.  
BBB operates on a franchise like model where each branch is run by the president.  If that person is a great leader, you are in for a wonderful experience. However, if they are not, they call the shots completely, and you have no recourse if you are treated poorly and unprofessionally, asked to do unethical tasks, and are not a "yes person" and one of the favorites. 
Top that off with a lot of nepotism where you will find that there is a double standards for pay and work expectations for the close relatives compared to that of the rest of the team.  
Finally, once you have made a sale, it is screened though another department where your sale (and commissions) can rapidly go down the drain.  The screening department very slowly and with evangelical zeal tries to eliminate as many of your new accounts (and commissions) as possible for the most ridiculous and nonsensical reasons. 
Once your account have finally managed to make it through the screening gauntlet, you have to give up your account and any retention commissions to the retention department so they can look like heroes.  
There is a ton of administrative tasks as well that will easily take up 25% of your time (and don't forget--you are working on commissions).

What is the best part of working at the company?
It is work from home. You are left to make you're own break schedule during your shift.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lack of communication from supervisors and CEO of the location. It is cold calling businesses that are already on BBB.org but are not accredited, and sourcing more/new business from the internet. Having to call business that have already declined accreditation previously, sometimes multiple times.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The culture is very sales driven and a 'you're only successful when you get applications." There is a lot less emphases on updating business info, which, if the BBB is really meant to help businesses, should be part of the conversation too, not just trying to sign businesses up. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Free-reign over your break schedule during your shift. Maybe one 30-minute meeting in the morning, but then zero communication with anyone at the company all day. Questions are answered in chat, but there is no socializing at all. It can be very isolating.

as a hire midway through the pandemic, eventually i experienced a reneging of schedule flexibility, and i was underpaid throughout my entire time at the organization. i was also rather frequently lied to, and ignored. eventually i was terminated without cause, without the ceo even having the confidence to dismiss me personally, as they knew they had fostered a poor environment which included chairs that were not ergonomic and a tasking schedule that did not include any breaks or rewards. i was also pressured to join a retirement program that may have involved an rrsp, resp, or tfsa, with no customizable options or any acknowledgement of a poverty level income. one could go on, but the last thing added here, will be, this organization only cares about obtaining credit card numbers from businesses, that is, business which are naive enough to think that lending their credit card number will lead to more trust in the market among consumers especially.

I don’t believe with the culture of the Better Business Bureau they preach market trust but unfortunately I feel small businesses were greatly taken advantage of and pushed into being accredited with little to no benefit to them the marketing programs where expensive and very few received business from these yet they were pushed for sales very far off but the better business used to be I feel businesses are better off with different avenues small business BC etc.

All BBBs are different and contentment largely depends on the management and how employees are treated. In this BBB, the upper management is really bad and in addition, family members are employed without a job posting or interview and do not seem suitable for the job, or indeed, it is a mystery what the need is at all for one of them as no one knows what they actually do. It is a stressful environment. Staff have left in droves and several have suffered health issues. Integrity seems to have taken a back seat. This used to be a respected BBB, but no  longer is.

It’s a great environment to work for some people with a management team that is extremely supportive of your success. Everyone is kind helpful and energetic a few are really passionate about what you do. They are a not-for-profit That being said, there is zero job security. If you get hired and don’t make your first month in sales you will be fired no questions asked, they have an agenda to make and if you don’t make money there is no place for you. 

Absolutely great in the beginning. The manager they have in place has her own favourite team and will break bend or just ignore the rules to benefit her and her 3 friends as much as possible. Even going as far as giving them access to information and data that they shouldn’t. Buuuuut the CEO Mary will pretend like she is upset but then nothing happens. Incredibly corrupt and incompetent as well as antiquated. Much better jobs available.

Over-worked, under-paid.  Boss is ok if you're working, but demeans people and talks poorly about the employees.

That being said, this is  a 9 to 5 job with summer hours, and if you're making your numbers you can take it easy a lot of the time.

Sales rep job is full of cold-calling and trying to make new sales.  A great way to build a career in sales, but the not the company you want to end up working for for the rest of your life.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I’ve not found the role or organization to be stressful.

Flexible, accepting, and great balance.
