Big Brothers Big Sisters

The typical day activities ranged from answering phones - assisting on event projects to working as an in-school mentor.

I learned: What working at a non profit agency was like; That a multitude of children with learning disabilities or diagnosis would benefit greatly from having access to the many services BBBS in Collingwood provides; What goes into organizing fundraising events in the Social Service field and finally learned that my passion was to advise and work with children in developing methods to enhance their experiences within the schooling system to help better achieve their future goals.

I could not have asked for a more amazing placement supervisor, they were detailed, supportive and when struggling with a task or concept advised me on resources I could use or would mentor me so I understood. An SSW student could not ask for a more amazing supervisor and placement experience.

The hardest part of this placement was changing many of the theoretical concepts taught in the classroom, to appropriately fit with its intended counterpart in the field. Again my supervisor went above and beyond teaching me about what I needed to understand and the knowledge that I would need to use, all the while being understanding of my very limited experience in the field.

Over all the whole placement was perfect, working under the wing of my supervisor, mentoring a child in school and learning how and what concepts addressed in my schooling could be applied  effectively to the real world was amazing!

Work days started with the most urgent and important maters first be it  Board related items to take care, a deadline to meet when a Trillium fund application  needed to get to the desk of the manager.

What I learned in that job is to work with colleges for so much more can be accomplished when you work together for a comon goal.

I have learned that eveyone can provide a management moment and you are doing a diservice to an organization if you pan ideas from others within the organization due to thier status.

Board culture had its ups and downs over my years with the agency but it was all about personalities and it is this that was the hardest part of the job for this writer.

Most enjoyable were the times that everything not only at theagency I worked for but all others aligned and working together for the greater good or an event.  This writer also enjoyed successes that clients, volunteers and the organzintion had and these were enjoyable moments for all involved.

Working with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County has been the best working experience I have had so far. It was a school placement and it was incredibly well rounded. I had experience working in the office, answering telephone calls, completing case notes and inputing them into the database. I helped other co-workers with jobs they needed to have completed. I also worked in the field, mentoring children, interviewing them to complete surveys and match monitoring. I also did some training in the store that they have.The management at BBBS is fantastic. Everybody witin the office is optimistic which makes it a fantastic place to work. The hardest part of working thhere was te big fundraiser they have every year. I had issues asking people to donate money but I was still successful in helping the agency have a successful year. The most enjoyable part of working there was the great staff who were wiling to help with anything I was unsure about and seeing first hand the work that everyone does and how it has an effect on the community and the children who are being served by this agency

BBBS/BGC does amazing work in the community for children and families. The best part is being a small part of anyone growing into their potential at any stage. 
Though the environment from which that community success stems often is stressful, all consuming, belittling, and isolating at times.
There isn’t a big staff so it feels like success is all on you and then you have to prove it was a success. 
When you’re pushed into being a stressed working person, you sacrifice a lot of personal time thinkings about work. When new staff comes and appear to not be getting the same pressure to perform, it causes a lot of animosity within the small staff. 
It’s a not for profit organization so you have to be self motivated and propelled to open doors and make things happen however management can make you feel small, under appreciated, and can be passive aggressive with their expectations. 

Having been at Big Brothers Big Sisters Windsor for over eight months, I have seen the amount of wonderful things this agency does for the community.  We are all so passionate about benefiting the children and youth we work with and I am so proud to be a part of this team.  They go above and beyond to make sure each child is matched with the mentor and or program that is most beneficial for them.  The agency also throws various events and fundraisers to advocate for the work done and to get more involvement due to the amazing things mentoring does for children and youth.  The agency puts safety, well-being, and needs of each child.  A typical day lasts from 9:00AM until 2:00PM for me and requires extensive session planning, computer work, and filing to make sure everything is up to agency standards.  I have used everything I have learned in my program in this placement and have learned so much more about working with children, especially in a group setting.  It is an absolutely amazing agency to be a part of.

This has been a fantastic year! I started with a financially struggling non-profit and started to turn things around in less than a year. Many connections have been made with the community, media, potential funders and referral sources. Action has been taken to reduce costs for the agency and to maximize our funding dollars to the best benefit to our clients. I was able to secure a large provincial grant that allows us the opportunity to develop our skills, understanding and sustainability. As the end of this maternity leave contract closes, I am proud of what we have accomplished in such a short time. I look forward to my next challenge!

What is the best part of working at the company?
Very disappointing workplace experience. Staff are often expected to work unpaid hours and volunteer extra time. Training was inadequate, and requests for additional support were met with dismissive or disrespectful responses. There was also a lot of workplace drama and gossip, which created an unhealthy environment. Overall, not a positive place for personal or professional growth.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
lack of communication and organization. Important information was not shared directly, staff were excluded from emails, and there were no clear job descriptions or expectations. This created constant confusion, unnecessary stress, and made it difficult to succeed in the role.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very stressful and confusing. My mental health took a hug decline

I had the opportunity to participate in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program as a mentor, and it was an incredibly rewarding experience. The organization does an excellent job of matching mentors with appropriate mentees, and the support and resources provided throughout the mentorship are top-notch.

My mentee and I had a lot of fun together, and I was able to see firsthand the positive impact that the program has on the lives of young people. The staff at Big Brothers Big Sisters were always available to offer guidance and support, and they made the process of becoming a mentor easy and enjoyable.

Overall, I highly recommend the Big Brothers Big Sisters program to anyone looking to make a difference in the life of a young person. It's a truly fulfilling and rewarding experience, and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to participate.

I was assigned 2 kids for the semester for an hour every week. I gave the kids the opportunity to pick an activity they'd be interested in and I allocated a time slot so that we can't get through every activity before the time ended or more so that they won't be bored. It was a nice environment to work in because the staff and teachers were very friendly and helpful. They'd always help out with coming up with new activities to play with which in my opinion was the hardest part just because I wanted to ensure that the child was having fun but at the same time learning something new. The most enjoyable part of the job is to see the kids playing together and really liking what they are doing and also being respectful to others and even myself in the area.

Working at BBBS Peel was a really great experience. It's very positive office space, everyone is pretty nice and helpful. The supervisors are very understanding and supportive. Hours are flexible, with opportunities to work from home. Definitely a comfortable position, with moderate stressful periods, like the start up of the school programs in September. The only downside with working to BBBS Peel was their salary which is on the lower end, still decent though. Also, while their are lots of training, workshops, and learning opportunities for professional development, there is very little opportunity to move up in the organization from a Caseworker position.

Overall I loved working there, if they paid a bit more, I would have never left!
