Bilton Welding and Manufacturing

I understand there is a lot of stress with our economic crisis. Many people are unemployed and companies are shutting down. I was hired in December 2018 and laid off in February 2020. Things were picking up a bit in 2018 for a lot of companies, Bilton was one of them. They were looking to hire a lot of workers because they had a pile of work that needed employees. I could have been unemployed still, but they hired me which I'm grateful for.

I started on days and transferred to nights. Both crews are great to work with. I never worked in a tank shop before and when I didn't know something or needed a hand, there was always someone to help and teach me the process when I ask for it. Lead hands come around once in a while to see how you're doing but never hover over your shoulder which shows trust in their employees. Leads and Foremans will stop and joke with you once in a while, which is relieving and builds morale.

Nights are a great shift with an excellent pay premium and 3 day weekends. The one downside is having to readjust your sleep schedule when they go through changes in work hours depending on the jobs which vary. Some months you're home by 1 am, others you're home by 4 am.

Employers are very transparent with keeping employees up to date with the current job situations, upcoming work, and future downtimes. We were all well aware of the upcoming slow time and were given an opportunity to bank time to prepare for the slow period which we were all given a chance to vote for.

Despite some controversy over safety vs production, I have never seen a perfect system with any company I've worked with. The systems they have in place were simple to follow for employees, as long as we were due diligent in following them, I've never seen any issue. Anything above our heads is nothing to take personally.

In an economy like this, I do not blame any employer for sacrificing employees in order to maintain a shop to provide future opportunities when things get better. They kept their more senior employees employed which is understandable and respectable. They were kind to set it up so I got EI right away and gave me free education opportunities to make me more hireable.

I've worked for bad companies in the past, but with Bilton, I have hardly any complaints. They understand the work to personal life balance which made working there much more enjoyable.

I'll be handing them my resume again when things pick up.

I have been here for almost two years now and Bilton has been The Best Company I have ever been part of in my life ! Since day one they have been more then welcoming and willing to help and guide you through there processes and procedures for there projects. They take on new challenges and have amazing clients and customers that expect the best quality and they can handle small but mostly massive jobs !

I started in a new branch completely new to the company and the learning has been new to even my past experience, I have seen the problems and challenges we face and right from the top down it’s amazing how we communicate to solve them and improve the designs. We do it all from design and engineering to the shiny new cladding or paint finish to our customers door. I’m amazed at how we can do so much and everyday is a new exciting task.

From hiring on to my lead position I have hit the ground running advanced and progressed my learning and experience, The Team (whole company) is amazing and they have a great family culture. We do fundraisers and support our local community while having fun and social events also we do a sundae day and have a slurpee machine !!!!

I can’t say enough about Bilton Welding and Manufacturing except I wish I worked here sooner ! I have never not wanted to go to work one day as I look forward to building some awesome projects and everyday is a new exciting sometimes dirty challenge but hey that makes us the Best !!!

Bilton is a great example of a company with a lot of potential that is unfortunately hampered by a lack of support/involvement from upper management and a borderline toxic work culture.

Overall, the place isn't bad - the pay is decent and benefits are adequate - but I'm not sure if it's worth the potential stress generated due to things like:
- unrealistic timelines for task completion
- poor communication between departments and with upper management
- lack of information to complete work efficiently
- heavy emphasis on speed, at the expense of accuracy/quality
- lack of desire for upper management to improve work processes
- lack of support, knowledge, or desire to help from many co-workers
- lack of training (you learn what's right by finding out when you mess up)

The result is a place where you will be given many tasks that must be completed quickly, but aren't given sufficient information to do so, so be prepared for the same problems to keep coming up. Management will mention these issues regularly, but upper management and/or other departments will very likely be unwilling to make any changes of substance, so nothing will actually get solved and the circle of issues will likely begin again.

The craftsmanship here is unmatched—whether it’s the skilled welders, pipefitters, electricians, or painters, each employee brings a level of expertise that sets Bilton apart. The work done here is nothing short of exceptional.

Beyond the technical skills, what truly makes Bilton stand out is its people. The company culture is rooted in care, compassion, and dedication. The management team operates with a genuine open-door policy, fostering an environment where every employee feels heard and valued. This accessibility and transparency create a sense of trust and unity.

It will be 8 years this week that I started at Bilton. I was an experienced Project Manager however, not in the Oil & Gas Industry. I knew Bilton had some of the best subject matter experts in the industry (Engineers, Designers & QC, Production Teams, etc), and with my desire to learn and Bilton's willingness to train, I have progressed substantially. I still work with the same great people that helped to educate me when I started and I consider them my friends. In fact, the majority of employees at Bilton have been here for 10 years - some have been here since the owner opened shop 29 years ago. That says something about a company.  
We're a quality fabricator/manufacturer and our clients have high expectations and that includes quality work from our employees.   We're paid well and treated fairly and when my colleagues from other companies were being laid off the last few years, Bilton kept the majority of us  - we weren't just a number.  There's always going to be challenges but our teams are strong and we find solutions. And at the end of the day when we watch a completed year-long project roll out of the shop doors loaded on a trailer with 132 tires, it's exciting! 


What you are told in interview is NOT the reality. Family environment NO, dysfunctional family environment YES! Your position here is not as safe as they say and the term of your stay is only until a more experienced resume shows up then you are gone. This is a company that fishes by hiring from the best resume at the time and waits for a better one to show up. 

Management is the most miserable group of people I have ever had the misfortune of knowing. Office is cramped with constant interruptions and I caution asking anyone a question, you cant get any further from a team environment than Bilton. Enter this office is like walking into a 8th grade classroom of a new school.

There is nothing as far as new employee integration and the lack of communication skill not just by management but between departments is ridiculous. If these people would spend more time working than they do blaming each other for a problem they would atleast accomplish something. 

You would be hard pressed to find a single person in that office with a personality. There just isn't enough money in the world that would get me back to this "Company"

Cons:

The company hires in haste and abandons employees just as quickly. Training is virtually nonexistent, and management is either disorganized or completely disengaged. Critical tools like work instructions were repeatedly requested but never provided. When I escalated concerns to HR, the response was mostly apathetic—some staff were helpful, but many ignored clear signs of managerial misconduct and unprofessional behavior. Accountability is not a priority here.

Advice to Job Seekers:
Think carefully before accepting a role. You’ll be thrown into chaos with no support, no training, and no clear direction. The environment was deeply toxic and, in my experience, one of the most mismanaged workplaces I’ve encountered. Proceed with caution.

The work environment is consistently high-pressure, with ongoing expectations to take on additional responsibilities while still meeting existing deadlines. Opportunities for compensation increases or advancement are limited, and promotions are often perceived to be influenced more by personal relationships than by qualifications or performance. There is also a notably high turnover rate among welders and shop personnel, which can impact overall team stability, continuity and safety.

Overall, career progression within the organization seems to depend less on demonstrated expertise or job performance and more on alignment with internal relationships.

Owner is a very passionate individual with a high standard of work ethic and expects the same from his employees.  However, by promoting an unqualified employee with poor management & no people skills in my opinion into the executive title levels that is very unethical and Is constantly belittling some employees in a targeted fashion has created high employee turnover with many disgruntled employees. Needless,  to say many issues with lots of office drama of her own and a total lapse in professional judgment.  

Biltons has great processes, systems and employees it’s just unfortunate how one bad apple can and has upset Biltons apple cart!

doing sub-arc  it might be i am not interested doing sub-arc but rather than that everything was they’re paying good and lots of overtime maybe in the future i will work with them again if i’m not doing sub-arc

safety first  all you need for your task you can borrow from tool crib and they trained all employees before they put on job

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
4days of work 10hours a day and 3days off i really love that kind of schedule because if you work friday it’s overtime
