I should have resigned earlier, but I loved the local team.

I believe it’s important to present this letter and perspective directly to senior leadership.

Since joining the company in March 2024, I’ve been fortunate to grow both professionally and personally. The role has allowed me to sharpen my skills in both digital and print media, while also giving me the opportunity to connect with a wide range of individuals and organizations across Yukon. Building meaningful relationships within these communities and working across diverse sectors has been an incredibly rewarding experience.

I will especially miss collaborating with the editorial team at Yukon News. Their passion for community-focused journalism has been inspiring, and I’ll continue to read and appreciate the thoughtful editorial insight they bring to local events and issues. I’m sincerely grateful to have met and worked alongside these wonderful people during my time here.

I’ve also come to better understand the unique challenges that arise from top-down leadership styles that prioritize optics over outcomes. The lack of succession planning when individuals are let go without notice creates unnecessary disruption, and the absence of standard, clear protocols has too often led directly to lost sales and a sense of instability that affects team cohesion and morale, as well as the confidence clients place in us, and consequently, their willingness to do business with us. The increasing pressure placed on my department, without the tools, support, or guidance needed to succeed, reflects a disconnect between expectations and operational reality. Additionally, the uniform, one-size-fits-all approach to sales, especially in a region shaped by distinct cultural and economic dynamics, has demonstrated a clear lack of understanding of local markets, ultimately limiting the company’s potential for meaningful growth in this territory while limiting the prosperity of our local team. In March of 2024, the Yukon News sales team consisted of seven associates, but with those positions still vacant, I am the sole associate remaining; we are without a publisher, a manager, sales support, or sales associates. I believe that business leaders have a responsibility to drive positive changes in their communities and their organizations; while I have truly valued my role and the chance to support my community, I have not experienced positive changes within our organization or the impact of anything remotely positive impacting Yukon communities. I believe I would now benefit from a more stable and consistent environment—one with clear expectations, solid leadership and the opportunity to feel fully supported in contributing to shared goals. 

Black Press is one of the better news agencies I have worked for in my nine-year-long career – and so far, it has been the best one for me. It’s no surprise that this industry has its struggles, but there are those – like me – who still continue to work in this industry because they enjoy working in media. In the past, I have worked for Postmedia and an independent, and hands down my experience at BP was a better one. This company really values people and culture. The senior management knows what they are doing – which wasn’t the case at Post. This company also pays higher than Post. And the company has tons of growth opportunities… In the last 4+ years, I went from being a reporter to becoming a backup copy editor and finally the managing editor. The management really appreciates and honours hard-working and talented employees. In my time here, I have also seen employees move from one province to another to be close to family (or personal reasons) and the company accommodated that change and they still continue to work in their new position today. If you are someone looking for growth opportunities, good benefits, a decent work environment and to feel appreciated by good people, and upper-level management who will listen then this would be a good company for you. 

I cannot emphasize enough how miserable working at this company has been. The atmosphere is incredibly negative, with nearly everyone unhappy, overworked, and underpaid. It’s clear that management does not care about employee well-being or satisfaction. Instead of providing support, they pile on unrealistic expectations yet the compensation is far below industry standards. You’re expected to work long hours with little to no recognition, and the pay does not reflect the amount of work being done. 

Management is rude, demeaning, and dismissive of any concerns or feedback. The lack of respect and appreciation is palpable, and it creates a toxic culture that affects everyone in the office.

If you're looking for a place where you can grow professionally, be respected, and be compensated fairly, do yourself a favour and stay far away from this company. It’s an environment that drains you, both mentally and emotionally, and there are far better opportunities out there.

At Black Press, it quickly becomes clear that technology and its professionals are an afterthought. Tech teams are treated more like tools than collaborators, rarely consulted, and consistently underappreciated. The culture fosters micromanagement, leading to a work environment riddled with anxiety and disrespect. Long hours and unpaid overtime are quietly expected, with little recognition or appreciation in return. While management struggles to understand why turnover is high, employees are left feeling undervalued and burnt out. The lack of clear direction—especially regarding digital versus traditional priorities—adds to the frustration. Although there are occasional perks, they fail to compensate for the emotional and financial strain. In the end, it's a place where passion dwindles and motivation fades. Wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re prepared for an uphill battle without much support.

What is the best part of working at the company?
You get the opportunity to learn and work with a lot of experienced and talented journalists. Very friendly working environment that is team oriented. Great opportunity to integrate into a new community and learn the ins and outs of journalism.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
teams are small and the amount of required content output can be overwhelming for a single individual

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very friendly and everyone is willing to help everyone. Plenty of communication between papers/departments.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Days typically start with news gathering, interviewing and then writing.

If you are looking for LONG term , this is not the place for you. 
I can't see any of these places open another 5 years as it's the newspaper industry. 

 I worked with Wonderful co-workers but upper management in our head office and In kelowna is seriously SO bad. 

They will also continue to add large work loads on you without acknowledgment nevermind a raise ... 

You will never receive a raise and the benefits aren't that great either. 

Two weeks of vacation only. After 4 years , you'll get 3 lol. 

Pretty bad turn over rate , which always says something and most people in the company are not happy and will express this over time. 

Over all I would NOT recommend working for this company. 



This is a company that will not only break you financially but emotionally while management wonders why "no one wants to work."  You will get thrown under a bus and micromanaged to the point of a once enjoyable job being full of anxiety and feeling disrespected every which way. There was the increasing expectation to put in long hours for free and work each and every day. Wouldn't recommend to anyone unless they want to stay broke forever and have a heart attack with a company that doesn't know if it is a digital first or print first product, and needs much much more staff with incentives and supportive management to attract and retain.

I'd never want to be accused of hyperbole, but this company is as close to "evil" as I've ever experienced.

Job work/Life Balance: Unpaid overtime, overworked, underappreciated, unrewarded, unregarded

Salary/Benefits: Terrible and awful. Appalling. Expect no raises in non-union shops.

Job Security: Will lay you off without a second thought. 

Management: Lies to your face. Literally. Lies.

Job Culture: Stressful (even for media), demanding, unappreciative. The company will also blacklist individuals.

No support from head manager.
Company would fall apart all together without assistant manager that literally does everything and gets no credit whatsoever. Constant threats and lies. No job security, your work/routes will be taken away from you with no notice.  Expected to work 7 days a week year round and extremely long hours when busy, such as holidays or sales events on Amazon. Zero work/life balance, strongly DO NO RECOMMEND!!!

If you do your job they trust you to work when needed. Great options for clients making it easier to sell products and meet targets. 

Lots of training about advancements in tech. and support from head office when needed. Support their workers where needed. 

Benefits and base pay plus commissions. Great place to make a career if you work hard. Lots of local events, paid for trips and opportunity.
