They entice you by offering you a singing bonus and benefits. You find out after 3 months that you might not qualify for it. If you do the $1000 bonus is closer to $700 after it goes through payroll and you pay 50% of your benifits. All the good jobs go to the longterm "employees". The ground crew and construction crews get treaded better then the maintenance (rope crew). You can only work if the other person/people they team you up with shows up. Can't be on ropes if your coworkers turn up late or leave early. They breakdown the jobs and miss count the drops. Then ask you to do work outside the scope of work without pay and say it's part of the budget even though it's not on their own breakdows. You do all the ground work inside and out including townhouses with little pay because their ground crew are absolutely useless. So be prepared to do a lot of water fed poling. If you have a car they will have you working all over the lower mainland. Coquitlam, Richmond, Surrey, and they will give you nothing like gas cards or time to help with your expenses. They expect you to have your phone data on 24hrs a day so they can contact you through an app but give you nothing for that as well. They take on all the complicated low paying building no other company in the city want. And don't forget about the 5 safety meeting a month. Weekly toolbox talks on your phone plus a mandatory 4:30 meeting at the office once a month. I didn't enjoy my time there and definitely won't be going back 

Working with Black Tie seemed like a good idea after the interview but once work started it was not as promised.  The buildings are complicated and the rates don't really account for this.  There is a promised wage but it would be a fight to actually get paid that since it averages out over the month and everything you do daily needs to be documented with pictures.

Starting out here you're on the bottom, employees who have been their longer get the easier and better paying jobs, have better equipment and support.  

Safety although supposedly a company value is ignored and dismissed. To finish these complicated buildings and make even your promised rate you either have to be very experienced or cut corners and put yourself in dangerous situations.

Building maintenance in general is a race to the bottom and I recommend anyone pursuing a career in rope access to get out of it.

Black Tie has a reputation in town, and it is well earned. I was lucky enough to get on with them shortly after getting my rope ticket, and stayed for the next three years until I heard wind turbines calling my name.

The management is fantastic, all experienced window cleaners who know its a hard job and do their best to mitigate that as much as possible. No other company in town throws a monthly BBQ for their employees, I'll tell you that. 

Gear is impeccably maintained compared to other operations, and I never felt asked to do anything unsafe. 

You really won't find a better place to work in windows than at Black Tie.

Although I joined the team late in the season, it was a great experience to start working on ropes. After getting my rope ticket this Fall I applied to several window washing companies in Vancouver and Black Tie was at the top of my list.

They did not disappoint. Lots of great people to work with, experienced and supportive supervisors, and as lots of folks mentioned, the BBQ's! 

It's definitely not an easy job, especially getting started, but I like working hard outside in the air. Looking forward to hopefully rejoining the team in the Spring.



Great crew and always making progress as a company. Been with them almost 3 years and always taking steps in the right direction. The owner is a genuine good bloke and always encouraging staff to voice concerns and have a say. Organize monthly bbq's for a chance to mingle with everyone and have a safety talk. After trying Servicemaster, All star, above and beyond, this one is easily at the top.

Typical work weeks are pretty smooth depending on the weather or type of building. Management always has the tools you need for whatever situation you are in. Fun workplace culture, like minded people. Hardest part of the job would be dealing with complicated building structures. Most enjoyable part of the job is working out doors on beautiful days with a fantastic view of the mountains ocean or city.

If you like to work hard with great people then Black Tie Victoria is a great choice. Management is incredibly supportive and understanding of your personal life. I had a chance to learn a lot from those with more experience than me when I first began working on ropes. 

It's a hard job physically but I find it personally satisfying at the end of the day. 

All in all, I would personally recommend Black Tie as a career opportunity in Victoria.

From an employee perspective: This company is well managed, and seems to always be pushing to find ways for betterment, which I think is both admirable and hard to find. Any feedback actually gets heard, and ways to improve those areas get talked about.
Although a male dominated industry, the guys here are inclusive to all communities, which is uncommon in many labour oriented professions.
9.5/10 would recommend.

Show up at the job site, learn what we need to do from the supervisor, or from the description in the app we use.
Do a good job, head home. 
Ratio of work difficulty to pay is very good.
Management tries hard to build a work culture- free food and beer at monthly meetings. 

I've never worked at a company where the health and well being of the employees mattered so much to management.  They truly care.  No place is perfect, but I know that Black Tie is always trying to improve there culture & practices to be the best and safest company to work for out there. Love the people I work with - they are like family.  5 stars
