A typical day at Blackbird Security involves arriving on time or a few minutes early, following your post instructions, taking breaks as scheduled, signing in and out using the company app, and writing detailed incident reports whenever necessary. Most shifts are straightforward and routine, depending on the site you're assigned to.

The management team is generally supportive, encouraging, and flexible with scheduling. Part-time employees should expect around 30–35 hours bi-weekly, while full-time employees typically receive around 70 hours every two weeks, with limited overtime opportunities.

The workplace culture is professional but fairly independent. Most communication happens through the company WhatsApp group for posting reports and updates, so there isn't much interaction with coworkers.

The job teaches valuable skills such as punctuality, customer service, patience during de-escalation, staying alert, following site-specific procedures, and knowing when to contact emergency services.

The hardest part of the job is standing for long periods and working the same routine at one site, which can become repetitive. The most enjoyable part is being assigned to different sites with different responsibilities, keeping the work interesting.

Overall, I would recommend Blackbird Security as a good part-time job or as a stepping stone for anyone interested in a career in policing, law enforcement, or a similar field. There are opportunities for career advancement within the company, but progression is generally gradual and requires patience, consistency, and long-term commitment.

Fun place to work; however, not a reliable source of income since hours are not guaranteed.

You get paid 26 times a year. Twice for 10 months and three times for 2 months. Let's say you earn $1,000 every payday. That's estimated $26,000 a year. Ten months you earn $2,000 while two other months you'll make $3,000. During those two months they'll deny you hours, force you to take a week or two off without pay and ensure you remain at $2,000 a month. You'll make $24,000 a year instead.  

Argument for that is they hired too many people and need to issue hours to everyone.  Sometimes extras just feel like being full time for a few months by pestering and checking in on their managers as if they were the stock market. Sometimes stores change their hours. The other issue is budget so they can't give hours to everyone. 

Benefits is available; however, not for everyone. You need to have a good position and guaranteed amount of hours to get benefits. That's just how it is. 

Pay is dependent on you, your performance and ability to communicate. 

You get to choose your availability which is great! Amazing and works perfect.

A lot of sites are fun to work at if you're not shy or scared of your own shadow and know how to communicate professionally. Some sites will dehumanize you enough to make you walk off though. 

All in all, this company is definitely a great place to have fun and have an extra financial booster to your already full time job.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Great company mgmt all have frontline experience and knoweleged in security work. Watched go from new small time company and now sence dominated the industry. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Not stressfull per say if previous experience. But having to deal with alot of persons who are living in a difficult part of time in there life, and possibly have issues with authority and or feel that they are being singled out. So good communication skills, compassion, and being non judgmental are key.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very team work orientented. Everyone stays connected via whats app. This way everyone gets a sence of whats going on and trends at different sites and locations. Mannagers will frequantly stop by and cgeck to see how things are going make sure on your well being and are avaliable for assistance at any time.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Depending the on the site (myself was working LP) arrive at site 15 min priir to starting, sign in company log book, get intouch with the sites MOD to let thrm know that they have security, ask if anything that needs extra focus start patrols and follow standard protocal and sop if any issues arrise during shift.

This company has many questionable practices for a security firm. Here is a few. 

First off they hire indiscriminately, encourage/engage in poaching, and have already turned over many quality LPOs in the region. Because of this they constantly overstate the qualifications of their staff to clients.

Management exists primarily to obtain new contracts and doesn't focus on staff or clients.  Managements communication with clients is non existent. I personally had to answer regularly for coworkers I had never met. Once I had to train a known cocaine dealer whose security license was under investigation. Meanwhile their current roster contains practically every locally known "bad apple" in the industry. 

They have no written operational manuals or employee practices, nor do they have any standardized training. Meanwhile metrics they use to measure performance conflict with client needs while endangering everyone involved. 

With the current pandemic Blackbird Staff include individuals I've seen working at Paladin, Securiguard, Salmon Arm Security, and others. They've all but abandoned loss prevention because they can't fullfil that role. 

Overall this company is over extended and poorly managed. They rarely get clients for longer than 1 or 3 month contract, and for good reasons.

There is a lot to say about this company, and unfortunately, most of it is negative.

There is no proper training program at all. From day one, everything feels uncertain. There is huge job insecurity, and now I understand why so many people leave quietly within just 1–2 months of joining.

The work culture is extremely toxic. The office atmosphere feels dead and stressful, like visiting a cremation ground. People stay silent, scared, and mentally exhausted.

The two HR managers are not there to support employees. Instead, they play politics, create problems, and escalate small issues. They hold too much power, and one day this will damage the company badly. Interestingly, while employees leave within 2–3 months, these managers have been there for years — that says everything. HR director is good.

HR needs a serious reset. The current HR approach is doing more harm than good. HR should exist to support employees, build trust, and solve problems, not to create fear, confusion, or office politics.

HR must stop escalating small issues and playing internal games. 

The salary is below market average, and employees are expected to work beyond office hours without any respect for work-life balance.

Job insecurity is at its peak. Toxic culture is at its peak.

My experience with this workplace was deeply disappointing and concerning.

There was a clear lack of organization and communication, which created a chaotic working environment. More troubling, there was a noticeable absence of basic human consideration in how employees were treated.

The office was heavily monitored with cameras, including during employees’ meal times, which created a sense of constant surveillance and discomfort. I also observed a strong atmosphere of fear among staff, with many employees appearing anxious and hesitant.

Trust was clearly lacking, largely due to management practices that relied on intimidation and what appeared to be arbitrary or unfair terminations.

In addition, I noticed a lack of equal opportunities for women compared to their male counterparts, which raised further concerns about fairness and workplace ethics.

Overall, this was an experience I sincerely wish I had never gone through. It was not only disappointing, but also deeply unsettling and, at times, embarrassing to be part of.

Stay away from blackbird. As tempting as it may be for those of you new to the Security industry looking for experience. Blackbird will end up as nothing more than a stain on your resume if your trying to get into law enforcement. They do not care about their employees safety whatsoever. You’ll be lucky if they actually have you sign your hiring package before they end up placing you out on a site to work. They have been know to hire people without a Security license. They supply a uniform that is in violation of SSIA standards is is extremely low quality and sub par. On top of all of this, they do not supply any training nor require it, but they do require you to go hands and make arrests. And that is all this company is about, the stats and meeting the monthly quota of arrests.  And the cherry on top of everything, for the most part management in this company does not have the slightest clue about the security industry. The owner himself has only worked one day of security in his life and some of the other managers have only been in the industry for less than a year.  But if your looking for an overall terrible experience and do not value your personal safety whatsoever, Blackbird is the place for you.

I was hired at Blackbird Security in February 2022 in the Victoria Region on Vancouver Island. Ever since the beginning of my employment, I have noticed how professional they are with their clients, staff, and co-workers. They make safety a top priority and making sure everyone's voice is heard. The flexible weekly hours makes it easy to balance working full-time, part-time, family, second jobs, or planning my life on a weekly basis. When I had concerns that I brought to managements attention, it was dealt with almost immediately. When someone isn't available for a shift, I have noticed management steps in to take care of the sites and support the guards on the floor in person. I am the kind of person who wants to advance my career every opportunity I get, and with Blackbird, that was made a very achievable goal. I recommend to anyone who is looking to advance or start their career in security, to join Blackbird Security!

Working a standing job for eight hours a day can be physically and mentally exhausting. Being on your feet for long hours causes constant pain in the legs, feet, and lower back, making it hard to stay focused and motivated throughout the shift. The situation becomes even more difficult due to poor management, including a lack of support, unclear instructions, and little concern for employees’ well-being. The hardest part of the job is standing for extended hours without proper breaks or opportunities to rest. In addition to this, the pay is low while expectations are extremely high, which feels unfair and discouraging. Employees are expected to perform at a fast pace, meet strict targets, and maintain a positive attitude despite the challenging conditions. There is nothing enjoyable about the job, as it feels repetitive, stressful, and draining. Overall, long standing hours, low pay, high expectations, and poor management create an unpleasant and exhausting work environment.
