Blue Mountain

They have a benefits system set up that only allows CORE employees to receive benefits but they make it nearly impossible to get CORE designation. Employee reviews are frequently skipped or postponed and forgotten about. Raises are yearly and based on job performance but are around 60 cents extra per hour. The management team seems more interested in distracting disappointed employees with temporary prizes or incentives. The company likes to reward exceptional employees with small prizes like an ice cream cone, $5 gift cards, $10 gift cards, or at the most, a trip to the spa. Quarterly they do a free lunch. Once or twice a year they do a discounted hockey game/Canada's Wonderland trip. Management is over-worked and have very little time for employee concerns. HR protects the company from employee concerns rather than assists the employee in addressing those concerns with the company. Promotions are not frequent, they do a lot of external hiring, and the internal promotions are largely based on popularity rather than merit or seniority. The atmosphere is a great help, and the environment is beautiful. Fellow employees are friendly and fun.

I am going into my third season here, and I feel that I am now qualified to tell you some things you need to know before applying at Blue Mountain.

Pros:
1: It's pretty easy work. Most of the jobs you may be doing are very easy. Some management jobs may be a bit more difficult, but a "standard" position, (for example Rental Attendant, Lodge Attendant, Ski School Instructor) it is quite easy. It can also be quite fun. 
2: Perks. As an employee, there are many perks. You get to ski for free (free rentals if you don't have your own equipment), and you get discounted food, drinks and things in the village. You can also get discount on hotel rooms. 

Cons: 
1: Favoritism. I saw another person on here saying something called "The Gang", and I agree with that. If you are in this so called "Gang", you can get away with anything. I have come across some people not doing anything, and others getting heckled even when they work twice as hard as their co-workers. Some departments are better than others at this.
2: Scheduling. They ask you for your schedule preferences, then (usually if you aren't in "The Gang") they ignore them. I had to talk to several managers and supervisors just to get hours that I am comfortable working.

In conclusion, Blue Mountain is a great place to work, but you have to watch out for a couple things.

We would start by getting chairs down and getting everything ready for opening, after the customers started coming in we would greet them in the cash with a coffee.
I learnt to deal with customers and their needs, clean the tables in a way that the customer would feel happy about and want to come back to the lodge. I learnt to be patient and always have a smile on my face, to have initiative and keep everything clean and presentable to the client.
The management was responsible and always on top of things, they would always keep us busy and presentable for our customers.
The co-workers was the best part of the job, we would have fun while being responsible, all of us had a great sense of humor and we enjoyed what we did.
The hardest part of the job was dealing with a high volume of customers at the same it, it can be overwhelming at times, but that taught me to be patient and always have the right attitude towards difficult times.
The most enjoyable was meeting different people and different cultures as well as having fun at the job, with the customer or with my co-workers.

If you are a truly inspired person by what you do or by being outside, then working here is wonderful.  You get to be with a lot of like minded people and you get to do what you are passionate about.  There are some really fun jobs to be offered here.  Day to day you deal with a lot of tourists coming from all over the world.  Your co-workers are usually pretty cultural.  The hardest part of this job though can just be the upper level of management.  Change can be pretty slow here because it is a large corporate company. You'll get the feeling of "if only they could be in my shoes".  There is also room for advancing here, but with so many people looking to advance out of the bottom line positions, there is a lot of competition.  You gotta know someone to get further.

Resort expects all customer facing employees( 90% of all staff) to work days, afternoons, nights and every weekend and all holidays for minimum wage. No parking in winter and no alternatives to driving up to the resort is offered. Very, very poor staff facilities. Winter staff cafeterias are nasty especially at the South Lodge and most departments do not have staff areas to store their winter coats, personal items and lunches/dinners.

They need to really up their game and treat the employees with respect and appreciation as there is a lot of competition out there for minimum wage. I wont be making the difficult trek to the resort this winter and staying in collingwood.

- to be regarded as an expendable day labourer 
- to be treated like a serf
- suck up to your managers
- have the attitude minimum wage = minimum effort
- can't be bothered to think on the job
- don't mind double faced superiors who bend or invent company policies as they please
- beeing sent home if there are few customers

then you will like it there and have an easy job 
you can advance in hirarchy 
move up from Operator to Teamlead with an incredible salary hike of 80 cts per hour.

The so called perks aren't worth it when you look at it.
- free skiing:  compare that to the pre season sale of the 5x7 pass and you'll find it has little value.
- 30% off merchandise: you can get that by shopping online

Staff rooms with exception to the one in Central Lodge which is visible to the public are a filthy mess filled with junk furniture which shows you the attitude towards staff

I spent 6 dedicated years at this resort out of love for the culture it was building. It didn't matter which department you were apart of, everyone knew each other, and got along with each other. Depending on your role, you could have long days spent with quests or you can be working behind the scenes helping the resort to run as smoothly as possible. Regardless of your role, you were a key ingredient to the success of the resort and the management team would acknowledge that. They would provide every staff with authority, have numerous staff meetings so that everyone had a voice and would act on the issues faced to make sure they wouldn't happen again in the future. Always expanding means there is room to move up within the company and show your love for the resort.

Most guests look down on you. Employer really doesn't provide any support to their employees. Provided maintenance services for 5 hotels (250+ rooms each) as well as 3 condo complexes with primary responsibility being looking after 6 pools and 10 spas heavily used by guests. 
Resort also only employs 2 people (for a 1.50 night premium) to carry that work load overnight (12hr shifts) meanwhile throughout the day there is at least 10 or more maintenance employees on staff to carry the same workload.  
Expected to be able to carry out all duties for the same wage most factories are paying. 
Training courses provided happen throughout the day so if you're shift follows that night, have fun because it's going to be a long night. 

The day at work can be erratic based on how many customers are booked which you have no control over, so even if you have been asked to be there for the day you may find you are sent home early. Team mates are great - everyone comes from a different background and is interesting.  By far the biggest issue is onboarding - the HR process is disorganized and unresponsive and the software used is brutal. No one appears to be responsible for sorting out problems with this. Team mates are helpful and Blue relies on this.  l didn't get my pass last year due to tech issues.  But working outside on the hill is amazing so your experience depends on your perspective. 

It was all very unorganised at the start but once the season properly got going it was much better. I'd usually work 9-5 which means opening up for lunch and cooking during the lunch rush, then a little bit of prep after my break.
I learned a few new tricks with knives and general cooking tips.
My managers were all great. Good people who work just as hard as you do and help out all the time.
My co-workers were mostly great people too, we always worked well as a team and got the job done.
The hardest part of this job was the busy rushes, working behind a line there isn't a lot of space and we had to move around a lot, but we made it work.
The most enjoyable part of the job was arriving to a smile and a crazy story almost every morning.
