Originally when I started, I felt supported, not judged, happy to be there, and I was actively aiding in clinic practices daily. With my own prior experience, I picked things up quickly. I even volunteered to help at the front desk when the regular office assistant wasn't able to come in. On that day, I was shadowed by 2 nurses, one being my team lead, who had no negative feedback and left me on my own as they stated it appeared I was doing a good job.

Unfortunately, this excitement faded. No praise when doing well from either my trainer or team lead at any point during training. Instead of coming to me directly as a team lead when I made a mistake, information about my work was given to my trainer, whom when asked which indicent I made the mistake; could not provide me with the incident nor anything constructive to learn from. I also was blamed for an incident to which I followed instructions from my team lead regarding medication drop off.

It was very unfortunate as there were many kind nurses and staff, but the ones who trained me made sure to make you feel lesser than, unwelcomed, and ostracized. You will get blamed for mistakes even if you were doing as instructed. Trainer micromanaged incredibly over things that were not necessary, per example stating I could not put a "." at the end of the abbreviation "pt." which stands for patient.

The LPNs and MOA who trained on Team A workers gossiped behind your back, spoke poorly of patients, and spoke poorly of other staff and their work.

Overall a very toxic, cliquey environment that I wouldn't recommend anyone to work with.

BMHC is a connection point for people facing systemic barriers in the community of Edmonton. Clients who come to Boyle McCauley Health Center get services at a one-stop point solution to their problems. This is because the agency is made up of multi disciplinary professional who are committed to support clients: Social Workers, Psychologies, doctors, psychiatrist, nurses, out reach workers, and addiction support workers. These are professionals who smile all the time, are friendly, supportive, and accommodating despite their personal life challenges. Everyday is different at BMHC and every client is tailored according to his or her needs. 

Clients are friendly to the staffs because they know there will be supported the right way. Clients are supported to build resiliency, empowered to achieve goals, and get their voices heard in the community.

As a social work intern student at BMHC, my experience has help me to see life from a different spectrum and develop a sense advocacy to foster the lives of people marginalized in the community. Homeless is caused by individual and structural factors. As individuals we are all bound to life changing circumstances which can result to homelessness. For example, sickness, job loss, and other personal related factors.The system has created multiple barriers which makes it difficult for people to navigate and find solutions to their problems.

Forward ever and backward never as we continue to provide humanitarian support to people who are marginalized in the society.

Management is terrible and tolerates bullying and harassment. Only promotes individuals who they are friends with outside of work. Morale amongst staff is poor due to lack of respect/communication from management and team leads. Team leads lazy with extremely unprofessional presentation to both clients and other interdisciplinary staff. Workplace culture is toxic. Management will pull staff aside and talk about other employees in disrespectful manner. Zero professionalism.

Honestly, management here is terrible. Not supportive at all. They make you feel dumb when you ask questions or have a concern. Clients are allowed to treat the staff like garbage and management and alot of the providers allow it or make excuses for the clients. SO MUCH abuse from the clients. Not worth your mental health working here. 

Great place to work. Some days may be challenging but overall BMHC is a fantastic place to work. Everyone supports each other and is here for the right reasons. BMHC provides a wholistic approach to health care of Edmonton’s most vulnerable population. A great clinic that meets clients where they are in life and provides harm reduction. 

Loved every moment doing a 5 month term position here. Providers give high quality care to often very complex clients with high needs.

Some of the most unethical people I’ve ever had the misfortune of working with. Soul crushing. No one cares about you or your mental well-being. That’s why the turnover is so great. Clients are lovely and staff do genuinely care about clients. Not so much for each other. 

Supportive workplace, great atmosphere with a lot of learning opportunities. 
Very busy clinic, but the team work is absolutely amazing and very efficient.

Management has no knowledge in being a manager/customer service. They'll hire anyone off the streets to fill positions. Any new medical office assistant graduates, DONT apply here  This place is a dump.

Wonderful support in this company. They care about clients as well as employees! There are so many programs dedicated to supporting community members and catering to their needs.
