Brantford General Hospital

A typical day entailed being assigned to a particular diagnostic area which varied according to you're level of learning and completion of courses and licences required.It was very busy at times.
I was given a lot of training paid for by the Hospital(ie Ultrasound technology)
Management was fine
My Co-workers were fine
The hardest part of the job was being on you're feet for 8 hour's,dragging heavy X-ray equipment to many areas of the hospital where patients were not able to come to us.
The most enjoyable part of the job..the patients themselves..it is rewarding to know that you have done a small part in helping someone get well.

Working as a personal support worker is a very difficult job itself. Working short staffed with Patients not being placed on the right floors, or given the right types of medications make the job so difficult. You would hope that caring for someone in the hospital setting, you would be given the right tools to do so, as to making the patient care safer and easier. But this truly is not the case. It is still very stressful and heavy lifting. Only to be given short days off, and even shorter time off when injured.

A typical shift. Days help pts up and get ready for day, meds,  nights get pts ready for bed, meds and watch or help with what was needed. Discuss care and needs with next shift, discuss care with all care givers involved.   Take orders from doctors and see they were carried out.  Worked on floors that were short staffed when asked.   
I learned a lot of new things such as stroke protocols and things that nursing school did not teach.  
Staff on most floors were helpful and got along well.   
Watching the patients get well and go home was great.

I provided bedside and personal care, obtained vital signs, administered medication, provided wound dressing, recorded and documented patient’s progress, and facilitated patient recovery post orthodontic surgery. Staff were very approachable and easy to work with. The hardest part of the job was the travel. I live in Hamilton so I always had to travel for 2 hours to get to Brantford General Hospital.The most enjoyable part of the job were the patients. They were very easy to work with and they were very cooperative with their care.

I got to make my own hours. I was a full-time high school student at the time, so I would walk from school to the hospital after school everyday and work a few hours making sure all the paper work was correct and organized and the patients files were all up-to-date. I would go in after everyone else had gone for the day (they were done at 3 and thats when I was just finishing school). I t got boring really fast.

The patience and the staff are excellent

Violent patients or families being aggressive physically or verbally

Depends on the staff and patients

Very busy answering call bells and caring for the patients

While you're pursuing further education, you can get experience at the same time. Your training program may even offer an internship or placement to give you on-the-job training. If it doesn't, consider volunteering in a healthcare environment or even pursuing an entry-level role in the industry. In this aspect  the hospital is doing a great Job to enable new comers to Canada gain relevant job experience

Really enjoying getting hands on experience as a PSW before I go back to school for practical nursing. Finding it hard to keep up right now as I work on a very fast paced unit. Great place to learn and lot's of room for growth within the hospital. Nursing manager on my unit is absolutely wonderful.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Remote job. Able to flex hours and no commute 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The administration is awful but it can be the health care system 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The team work from home and it is easy if you don't like to socialize

they closed the cafeteria because the hospital was not making any money on it.  The only food in the hospital that staff/visitors can eat is tim Horton's (yuck).  I did receive minimum wage for working this job.  I was left alone most of the time during my shift to deal with deep fryer, salad bar prep and cash.
