Brock University

Brock has been bleeding IT staff for years. They are all leaving because they can do less for more money pretty much anywhere else. Brock doesn't care. They just hire new people who are simply looking to use Brock as a stepping stone to get a job with an organization that will pay them appropriately.

You could be a rockstar, but Brock won't care because you're not faculty. They will give you a pittance raise each year saying they have no money or their hands are tied, all while giving faculty increases that are WELL above cost of living.

After Brock cut many staff positions, staff feel vulnerable and many work longer hours than they are paid for. They are afraid of not getting their work done and being reprimanded or worse. They can't get their work done because Brock let many positions go over the years, and there are more students.

When you do leave, your fellow staff and some faculty will have kind words for you, but administration's response amounts to "meh". They don't care you're leaving. No matter how important the university claims its people are, they will make zero effort to keep you. They will see it as an opportunity to save some money (which they get to hand over to faculty) by leaving your position unfilled for months and hiring someone they get to pay less. They don't care that they are now constantly training new people and service to the students suffers.

Brock's old tagline "Careers Begin Here" is appropriate. If you are looking to get a start so that you can go work somewhere else, this might be the place for you. Just never go above and beyond what they expect. You will get nothing for it.

When i work in two our sister stores i am the key holder, i come in and count the till to maintain a proper float at the start and end of the day. I cater to customer needs throughout my shift at the store. When i am a key holder i usually always open and close the store, and make sure everything is in order at the end of the day. When i am done i go back to the main store and give my managers cash flow information as well as any valuable information to help keep the store in order (i.e., restocking merchandise).

When i am merchandising, i lift heavy equipment to and from the back room or sales floor. I restock shelves, i design displays on a regular basis during peak seasons. I am extremely efficient at this, which makes my managers very grateful to have me. 

I work very closely with my managers especially during peak sale periods, i help coordinate sales, and well as assist with any marketing activities that take place during the peak sale periods.

With my co-workers i am a team leader, i address concerns and give duties, and always make sure everyone is cafe and happy. 

the hard part is the lack of career advancement, and benefits associated to this job. It is a tough process especially in a multi unionized and unionized environment 

I love the team and family environment everyone is extremely caring and friendly! However, i am looking to advance me career and job experience, and currently the university is in a deficit and a hiring freeze, so it is difficult to advance me career here

Amazing Working at the makerspace was an extraordinary experience that profoundly impacted my personal and professional development. The space buzzed with creativity, innovation, and collaboration, providing a fertile ground for anyone eager to learn and create.

Every day at the makerspace was a new adventure. The array of tools and technology available was staggering: from 3D printers to laser cutters, CNC machines to soldering irons. The environment fostered a sense of endless possibility. I found myself constantly experimenting, pushing the boundaries of what I thought I could achieve. 

But it wasn't just the equipment that made the experience so enriching. The community of makers—artists, engineers, hobbyists, and students—was incredibly supportive and inspiring. We shared ideas, provided feedback, and celebrated each other's successes. This collaborative spirit not only improved my projects but also taught me the value of teamwork and diverse perspectives.

One of the most memorable projects I worked on was a custom-designed drone. The process was challenging and required learning new skills in electronics, programming, and aerodynamics. With the guidance of the community and the resources of the makerspace, I was able to bring my vision to life. The sense of accomplishment I felt when the drone took its first flight was indescribable.

Overall, working at the makerspace was more than just a job; it was a journey of discovery and growth.

This job never really ends. Even on the nights you are not on call, if you are in the building, you are basically on call. You help your students, help other students, are a support system for other dons. I learned how to work with students, while being a student myself. You learn how to be understanding and have open conversations. You learn multiple techniques on how to deal with very serious situations. Management was not the most helpful. Aside from one of the managers, which I was not assigned to, it was very difficult to get my complaints and issues heard. Even within the building system, when this job was affecting my school work and daily life negatively, there was no support, despite that being what the job was about, supporting students during their time in residence at school. Workplace culture was a mix. My own floor of students was amazing, we had a very fun environment that was supportive and open. Some of my coworker were great to work with and improved the job. Others, including management, were difficult to work with and caused  a difficult workplace environment. The hardest part of the job was balancing it with daily life and school. This was an almost 24/7 job leaving little time to balance. The best part of the job was working with the students and helping them succeed in school and in their personal life.

A typical day at work was to come into the trainers room and fill the water bottles and jugs for the team. I would stay in the room for about an hour before practices started to tape any ankles that needed support. Every practice my co-trainer and I would stay on the field in case any injuries occur. On game days, I had to attend to injuries that occurred on the field and refer the player to further help if need be. I have learned how to take care of acute injuries as well as knowing when a player may be injured but does not want to tell the trainers. I have also learned how hard it is to keep an injured player from returning to the field until they are well again. With this job, I have furthered my knowledge about injuries, care for injuries and athletes return to play. I worked under the amazing staff of the Brock University Athletic Therapy Clinic. They were very helpful with anything we may have needed with the soccer team as well as taught me many valuable lessons I can take with me in the future. I loved working with this team as they trusted in us as the student trainers to know what to do about their injuries or any problems that they had.

Working as a Residence Building Adviser was a very fun and hardworking job. The position required people who were enthusiastic about Brock University and wanted the students who live in Residence to get the best experience possible, this to me was the selling point to apply for the position, as a student who lived on residence I wanted to make the most of my time on residence and make sure that other students who were like me and living on campus got the best experience possible. As an Building Adviser my job was to plan and organize monthly events that students that live in residence could attend and have fun at, my job also entailed listening to the students and what problems they might have with residence and taking them to Board of Residence and making them the aware of the issues that students faced. This position enhanced my leadership skills, as I was someone who took a leadership position in the residence so that the other students who have a great year.

Working as a Campus Store Associate has been a rewarding experience. My role primarily involves assisting customers, handling cash, managing web orders, and maintaining inventory. The job offers a dynamic work environment where every day presents new challenges and opportunities to learn. I particularly enjoy the customer service aspect, as it allows me to engage with diverse individuals and enhance my communication skills.

The team is supportive, fostering a collaborative atmosphere where everyone helps each other out. The flexible hours are also a great fit for students, making it easy to balance work and academic responsibilities. Additionally, I’ve developed valuable skills in cash handling, stocking, and order management.

However, like any retail job, it can get hectic during peak times, especially around the start of the semester, but the experience has strengthened my multitasking and problem-solving abilities. Overall, it’s a great part-time job that helps build important skills for the future.

This was my first official landscape job. It was an old estate that had been bought by a university and turned into an art centre/museum. It had beautiful vast gardens, with wildlife and pleasant people. I worked with my supervisor and a co-worker with the same position as me. I had the choice of working individually or accompanying either of the two. Duties varied from weeding to design and clean up. I was also trained to operate a small tractor and trailor. The hardest part of my job was probably walking back up the hill ( the gardens were on the niagara escarpment) but it wasnt really that terrible. The most enjoyable part for me was when I was appointed specific duties that did not require alot of assitance and lasted most if not all of the day. I enjoyed the continuous work as opposed to the smaller tasks. I was able to implement my knowledge of plants and landscaping and it gave me a sense of pride. I would gladly go back.

A typical day for this program really depends on how the client is feeling that day if happy client's compliance with instructions, if not clients can be withdrawn themselves from the activities and task given to them. 

Learning occurs when learning about the client and their behaviors. Its' a learning process to be flexible of using items or surrounding that helps a client and their target function for the client.

The program is managed by two to three individuals that overall watch and advice the program. These people are great and fun to interact with besides the clients. 

The workplace alone is all about the clients it's about the clients and giving them the best effort as we can. 

The hardest part, overall I do not find it hard, its part a job that I chose to do. 

Overall, I just enjoy what I do and give my best efforts.

The worst managed company I have ever worked for. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Time clocks didn’t work. Very pushy management. Nobody cares about quality of the food or their environment. If you do a good job other staff put you down. Shun you and try to sabitosh you

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
If I was asked to come in early and they would sometimes forget and leave me searching around for security people to let me in. Have to wait for them to call my boss at home to give me clearance and not compensated for my
