Bruce Power

At my time working for Bruce Power, I learned a lot of things that were engineering-related. A typical day of work would consist of organizing the database for components, reviewing documents, and providing assistance on technical work. What I mostly learned was how to implement new strategies based on the software I learned to use, and I learned how to write up reports for technical work. Management was extremely helpful and there was never a time where I was doubtful about the work I did or found myself with nothing to do. There was always something to do. The workplace culture heavily revolved around communication and meetings, which is where I learned about a big bulk of the information for work. The hardest part of the job was learning the acronyms that go around the workplace. Even with 1 year working there, I still did not have time to learn all the acronyms, but the ones that were the most relevant to me were the ones I was most familiar with. The most enjoyable part of the job was performing calculations for the technical reports that I had to write and present to my co-workers/management and also communicating with co-workers about any inquiries I had or asking for work to assist in.

If one applies themselves and desires to grow, BP will provide you that opportunity.  A typical day begins at 6:30 am to 4:30 pm as a manager such as myself.  Daily we have the plan of the day meeting with operations and senior leadership.  The work place culture is a live and growing daily activity.  Bruce Power provides excellent face to face communications with the CEO and CNO.  I love the work I do as a leader in various areas such as equipment reliability, Plant Health Committees, Challenging Rotating Equipment Removal, Installation and Return to Service.  I am able to conduct training sessions with operations, maintenance, engineering and supply chain.  The hardest part of the day, is that the day is over and it seems like it just began. I have plenty to do and contribute to the station.  

My opinion and leadership is valued.  My division manager helps me grown almost daily.

The daily routine starts with a face to face turnover of operational details form the outgoing crew. Then an assessment of the days planned work and available manpower. Then assigning work, checking worker qualifications and completing  pre-job briefs including providing any documentation/procedures required. All work activities are logged and work status is updated. Any equipment repairs required are initiated and logged.

The training is a extensive and a combination of classroom and in the field with re-qualifications every 1 to 3 years depending on the qualification.

The pay and benefits are great but working conditions can be any weather from high heat to rain and snow storms. 

The people are mostly highly educated and in general friendly and willing to help solve any issues.

I never advanced beyond the position I was hired into two decades ago.  The company frowns on any kind of career development unless one is in management and favoured by the executives.
There is no career development or training for non-management personnel.  There is no encouragement for growth and reaching your potential.

I became stagnant just a few short years into my position and wanted to try other positions but HR blocked me at every turn.

Bruce is very difficult place to work. PMs have little authority or respect but are blamed for everything and made escape goats for everyone's mistakes. It's a very stressful work environment due to lack of work ethics towards contracted staff. No work life balance, too much work and long hours without overtime. Senior management is insensitive and without any moral compas. They misuse the govt funds without any shame. Contracts for goods and services are issued to select few firms at 4, 5 times the industry norms in the name of Nuclear. Those not willing to keep their eyes and months shut are quickly shown the door. They have highest resource turnaround in any industry. There not a single week without someone leaving and someone new joining.
I wouldn't recommend this place of work to my worst enemy. 

This organization is leading with great intention.  They are proactive to support the growth of their permanent employees. They offer a great benefit package for full time permanent employees.  

They are an industry leader that is renewing the life of the local community. 

However, they do not offer equality to their augmented staff.  There is a large discrepancy between the treatment of contractors and that of the permanent staff.    

If the company is to retain augmented staff with contracts that extend for years, they should be more accountable.  Contractors are not receiving this information upfront, and often believe that a contract is the first step to a permanent position.  This is not the case.

Generally a good place to grow as a junior engineer or apprentice. You are treated well and have job protection if you are a full time employee for the company. Not so for contracted staff, who work excessive hours But can be  mistreated Or abruptly terminated for making mistakes under sever pressure.The work environment is less formal than places of similar businesses I worked for. However management is only worried about their own image and have no hesitation to fire people who won’t cover for their over-commitment. The company does good deeds for the community and does create jobs for the economy.

I was employed as a temp under a union agreement, negotiated through the PWU in Toronto. It was difficult working for managers who had no idea of the requirements of either of my trade disciplines. It was also difficult working in an environment where the maintenance people who were full time employees from Ontario Hydro days, had no trade certification, and we were essentially doing the same work, but they did not want us in the plant. In some cases it made the working culture undesirable. Most of the work was very unchallenging and repetitive. Trades persons who come in with certification find themselves pigeon holed into the same job day in and day out, doing essentially the same task..

If you enjoy working in a "snake-pit" environment, then civil maintenance at Bruce Power is for you.  There are many lazy people who work there and many of the younger employees have the "entitled" attitude.  Materialistic, back-stabbers, management kiss-*** types (in all departments).  I wish they did regular drug testing of their employees - that would eliminate half of them.    Too many people work there and there is not enough work for them to do on a regular basis which leads to boredom in departments.  I've heard stories of security guards catching people making out in the parking lot at night and in elevators in the station (and who knows where else).  Toxic workplace, in general.  Ontario Hydro was better managed and the union was better then too.

I have held a number of positions in the nuclear industry at various locations since I began working for Ontario Power Generation in 1987.  The positions have always represented a career promotion and opportunity for continuous self development and improvement.   My previous experience and knowledge will allow me to fit into this new role in an efficient and effective manner.  I have worked directly for the OPG and Bruce Power Training Departments as Training Officer.  I have established a good working relationship with many of the Canadian Nuclear training stakeholders both within OPG, Bruce Power, and all supporting work force providers and union organizations
