CHOICES Youth Shelter

I first started at CHOICES as a placement student. At first, I was very scared and worried about working at a shelter due to my lack of knowledge surrounding youth and the challenges they may face. However, during my placement, all staff were very knowledgeable and insightful. Everyone made me feel welcomed and a part of the team. The team is receptive and respectable. Every day is a new learning opportunity, and it really warms my heart to see the benefits of the work we do when supporting our youth in Orangeville. The director, case managers and front-line staff lead the shelter with love, inclusivity, and a keen eye to be the best taking account each person’s intersectionality. During my time there, I was able to gain new skills that I am now able to put into practice. This is what has made me want to continue to be a part of a strong movement that CHOICES is making in the community. They value each youth leading them to gain confidence and have self-determination in their own life. I am grateful that I can continue to work alongside individuals who share a passion for helping youth each day.

I've been working at Choices Youth Shelter for roughly a year and a half.
During my time here I've experienced an extremely supportive and positive workplace atmosphere.
I have never worked for such an understanding, and kind management team before. 
They are always willing to work with their staff in terms of addressing any concerns. 
-During our weekly staff meetings we are always given the opportunity to speak out about any issues or concerns we are facing while at work, and each time these concerns are taken seriously and dealt with quickly.
Another thing that has really stood out to me during my time here is management's willingness to work with staff members personal availability when making work schedule's. I personally have always felt respected and heard when sharing my availability and not being met with any surprises when the schedule comes out.
- Overall I would encourage anyone looking for job/career in youth work to definitely consider applying here! 

I started off at Choices as a student, and I have since been able to grow into a full time employee to now the case manager at the shelter. The staff have given me many opportunities to grow and learn new skills which made it possible for me to grow within the organization. In my time I have been supervised by various directors and  I can honestly say that Choices hears the voices and concerns people put forth, and have put effort into changing the narrative of the shelter. The current director has been a saving grace for this shelter and she has done everything in her power to make the change we all wanted to see. She fights for the organization, her employees and the youth day in and out. She never turns off. I am proud to work under her leadership, and am excited to continue working with my fellow employees to continue being the change Choices needs in this community. 

The typical day here is manageable, with lots to do but not an overwhelming amount. There is always lots to learn and participate in, with chances to take initiative and take direction. Always chances to use your skills, use your voice, be heard, all while being supported and encouraged. Workplace culture is friendly and laid back, with a management team who treats us like a family. I feel supported and appreciated, and I am usually always thanked after finishing a shift or if management leaves for the day. Management is always on call, and I always know that I can call them for anything at anytime. It is very enjoyable working with the youth and building connections while inspiring hope and supporting the residents. 

Choices was a stressful environment, not just because of the behavior among some residents, but because of the lack of consistency among each front line worker. There were times you could be undermined on rightful decisions made and residents saw this and figured since I didn't have much of a say, they didn't have to listen to me. This created constant power struggles and made teamwork a lacking need. Consistency and teamwork in this environment would have made it a much more comfortable milieu for the staff and residents.

Being a part of the team at Choices fosters a foundation of support and collaboration! We work together to ensure that our residents have positive engaging experiences that support their journey. This is deeply meaningful and impactful work. Being a grassroots organizations means that our voices matter. We are heard and appreciated. The culture of this small but mighty organization has shifted to be a positive , encouraging environment.  

Clients need to be out of the house all day, some of the day to day programs are unable to be met as the clients resilience to cooperate, the clients are on a structured time table that they often press and challenge as a result of feeling as though they are adults that do not need anyone in this life to assist them or direct them in how to live healthy lifestyles.

My time at Choices has been a positive experience. The staff are all supportive and the management has done a good job making sure the staff feel respected and included. The pay makes it really tough to imagine being here long term as it’s just not sustainable. I also believe the hours should change so that there is never just one staff there alone. Aside from that I’ve had a great time working at Choices. 

Great first job for those fresh out of school. Variety of shifts. Relaxed environment between colleagues. Pay is low. But it’s a stepping stone to bigger and better. Current director is a workaholic who will listen to ALL concerns and suggestions. Very personable and friendly director. She listens to staff in such an engaging way, it’s refreshing. Everyone is valued. 

Working with youth in need. Supporting their basic needs. Very rewarding position. The hardest part is the salary with no benefits it just was not sustainable. The happiness on the youths faces are what made the job one of the best I have ever had. Management was great and very supportive. Learned new things every day with different individuals and experiences.
