I feel compelled to share my experience as a part-time worker at City of Richmond Hill. Unfortunately, my time with this company left me disheartened and dissatisfied with their treatment of part-time employees. It became evident that city's priorities were heavily skewed towards their full-time staff, especially those protected by the union.

One of the most disappointing aspects of my employment was the noticeable disparity in treatment between part-time and full-time workers. It was disheartening to witness how full-time employees received preferential treatment, better benefits, and greater job security, while part-time workers were seemingly overlooked and undervalued.

Communication was another area where the city fell short. Excessive emails after work hours became the norm, blurring the line between personal time and work obligations. The constant flood of messages created a sense of burnout and left little room for a healthy work-life balance. This practice disregarded the boundaries of part-time employees who were not expected to be available outside their scheduled shifts.

Furthermore, the manner in which part-time workers were spoken to and treated was deeply disappointing. There were instances where our contributions and ideas were disregarded or talked down upon simply because we were not part of the full-time staff. Such a dismissive attitude was demoralizing and hindered our ability to fully engage and excel in our roles.

Overall, my experience as a part-time employee at City of Richmond Hill was one of frustration and dissatisfaction. The city's failure to adequately support and value their part-time workforce, coupled with the preferential treatment given to full-time employees, created an unhealthy work environment. I hope that management takes note of these concerns and works towards creating a more inclusive and respectful workplace for all employees, regardless of their employment status.

Worked here,, and still do, for 7+ years. Was made supervisor on weekends and often given major responsibilities including training of new employees both on and off ice, and supervising sessions as the head on ice instructor. I successfully helped make the skating and hockey program grow exponentially in a very short period of time. 

When opportunities arose for advancement that I was easily qualified for I was never even granted an interview let alone an offer. With a spotless track record and raving positive reviews from the customers, and parents of children I taught I was never given any chances to move up. 

As Outside hires with less experience and understanding of the program came in as my superiors the program began to suffer. Both due to lack of interests by my supervisors and customer relations. Although I continued to have return patrons taking my classes the standards of other new instructors and subpar training on the behalf of my supervisors led to a steady decline in our popularity of programs. 


Although I loved this job, the Town of Richmond Hill does not appreciate nor take note of its talented and dedicated staff. While offering little opportunity for growth.

I do many thinks at the pool, the to main and obvious things I do are to prevent accidents/treat them, and to teach children, adults, toddlers how to be comfortable in the water and how to swim. On a Regular Lifeguard shift, we would always arrive 20min early to prepare for the swim to take place, same goes for instructionals. Everyone treats each other as an equal and is it very fun working in the atmosphere the pool provides. The most difficult part of the job has to be the communication and patience with smaller children and there ability to swim. Some kids are more difficult to deal with than others but at the very end of the day, they are learning new things and are being motivated to be active. Management is amazing, very easy to talk to and if we have any concerns, they take the right actions and ensure that it will meet up to the persons expectation.

Working as a Seasonal Labourer in Richmond Hill is a great experience for anyone who enjoys staying active and working outdoors. The job offers a good mix of independence and teamwork, allowing you to handle tasks on your own while still being part of a reliable crew. Duties are straightforward and varied, which keeps the work from becoming too repetitive.

The team environment is one of the biggest highlights—coworkers are generally easygoing and supportive, making shifts more enjoyable. The pay is solid for a seasonal position, and the steady hours provide good consistency throughout the contract.

Overall, it’s a rewarding role that helps build strong work habits, offers hands-on experience, and provides a great way to stay productive and earn money during the season.

As a volunteer I was responsible for things such as supervising children, assisting counselors with setting up / taking down different objects for activities and being engaged in the activities to help keep the children content. The management and supervisors were very nice to me and it made my time there a lot more enjoyable. Most of the enjoyable parts were the interactions I got to share with the children and the supervisors. The children were fun and well behaved, and the supervisors would give me advice and guidance to help me improve as a person and a worker.

First off I’ll say just don’t work here. I’ve worked here for less than a year and it’s awful. The guys I work with are great but everything else is a joke.  Management is an absolute nightmare. They have no idea how to do their jobs. There is very clear favouritism here and everyone knows it they just don’t say anything about it. The union won’t protect you in most cases. If management likes you then you’re set. If management doesn’t like you they will do whatever they can to get rid of you. No one is happy working here. You’re under payed. They require you to have certifications that are not relevant to your job but will fire you if you don’t have them. I can’t say enough how terrible it is to be employed here

I would start my work with me coming about a half hour early before all of the kids to get my lesson plan started. I learned that you need to be very practical and not confuse these kids as to what you are teaching them. The hardest part about working in a job like this, is that you need a lot of patience with some of these kids. Its hard at times, but you must stick to it and help the kids learn all they can. The best part about this job was seeing the kids actually pick up the techniques and methods I was teaching them, It was a joy to see.

isolated,  dirty and noisy. extreme temperature swings due to the weather 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
go to work. clean the building make sure things are working correctly and go home

Poor management but a lot of experience is gained from this workplace. You are subject to lay-offs should a pool capacity not be optimal for employment without notice (from experience). Seen lots in aquatics. No benefits for part-time staff. Great job for high school students but they tend to treat adults like teens as a result. You are required to spend 15 mins prior to your shift and can be asked to stay 15 mins after without pay to help set-up/clean-up.

Good pay and benefits for full time employees. Numerous terminations by Management of full time staff
over past several years. Termination agreement's don't allow for any detailed disclosure of the hidden
secret Management operations over the years withheld from the public.
