Caffe Artigiano

Toxic workplace with terrible pay. Head office was a huge issue, they were disorganised, gossiped about each other to cafe managers and never got anything done. Everything in the store was broken and they never wanted to fix or buy any new equipment, this made it difficult for the people actually working in stores and dealing with customers to do their jobs. On top of that, managers got paid little to nothing, especially for the amount of overtime that was expected (but was never paid for). The owners have no idea what they're doing and have no interest in actually learning about the product/service they own. The owner doesn't even know what's on menu, he once tried to order something we didn't even make. His wife, tries to control everything to make the stores look more like Europe or Manchester, where she's from. It's a complete disaster, children are running the business! Not to mention, the president, doesn't even know what he's doing! He tries to control the regional managers and doesn't let them do their jobs properly. He's clearly confused as to what his job title actually entails. The only people at head office who actually try to their jobs, are not provided with the resources and flexibility to do so (controlled by the owner and president). Meanwhile, they're too cheap to hire an actual handyman, so they get someone who they demoted from operations manager to do all the repairs in stores. Employees normally don't last more than 6 months, once they realize how disorganised head office is and how terrible the pay is compared to other barista jobs. Most of the locations downtown are infested with roaches, mice, and flies. They also don't follow any foodsafe practices, and the food is always old and kept for 3+ days to be sold.  If you're thinking of working here, please take my advice, don't. You will regret it!

I worked at Artigiano for almost a year, and waited for my salary raise for a supervisor position ( i worked just like a supervisor for 6 months without an actual promotion) Then they changed their mind and didn't promote me and they didn't say anything about it. When I asked the manager about my salary raise and the promotion, he walked away while i was talking to him and he played with his phone... 

Management didn't pay attention for any issues at the caffe about the equipment. The fridges were always broken. Every week, we had to move dairy orders to another fridge if we can find any room. They didn't fix or changed any equipment when necessary. 
We were only allowed to have 1 drink, and it has to be basic, such as tea or drip coffee. 

Management promised to me work with contract, but after 7 months I asked about my contract  but she said she doesn't have anytime for me, it's my problem! Well, I had to quit. They lied everyone. 

We worked without a manager for 3 months, and the new manager, well... he was useless. Better without him. 

Coffee machine is usually broken. Worst espresso ever. 

Manager was asking feedback about every employee and then he told everyone about everything what you told him.

A typical day at work you help customers, make coffee, assist other members of the team, extensive cleaning, and depending on your position a variety of other responsibilities

I learned how to make high-quality espresso drinks, how to manually set the espresso, how to steam milk, the difference between different roasts of coffees, and how to deal with difficult customers.

Management depends on which location you work at. Head office makes questionable decisions that often make the jobs of the baristas much harder than it has to be. They often make changes without thinking about how it will affect their employees. But the work environment and your co-workers are very positive and supportive.

The hardest part of the job is dealing with very difficult customers and not being defended by your management when a customer acts inappropriately.

The most enjoyable part of the job is learning to make coffee, learning latte art, and the very few customers that are nice.

Typical day here is exhausting and frustrating. You’re expected to do the work of a manager while getting paid minimum wage. It’s impossible to move up or get a raise/promotion, no respect from the hire ups. Management is disorganized and toxic. Don’t expect any understanding if you call in sick, you’ll only be met with attitude and then you’ll be taken off the schedule for the next week. Coworkers are lovely but with such a high turnaround rate you can never get to know any of them too well. Coffee and food quality is terrible, I was embarrassed to serve it at such a high price. Bar training was non existent. Tips get skimmed off the top by management, pay is never what you expect it to be. Minimum wage employees are expected to do mountains of work at close and if you get any of it wrong, prepare for a lengthy text from management in the morning. Do not work here, avoid it at all costs, there is nothing enjoyable about working here besides free drinks on shift. Don’t waste your time with this company. 

I worked at Kerrisdale location, the manager/owner bought the franchise with no prior experience in the field.

Just as a few tips, if you like coffee or hospitality industry, do not work here because you will end up hating it.

The manager has no idea what is a cafe experience, no one is trained how to make a proper or even standard espresso.

Honestly in the area, no one can make a worse coffee than this place, try it and you’ll see.

If you’re looking for training and experience, this is not the place as you’ll end up wasting your time and not learning anything.

The job environment is not friendly, I never felt like I belonged to a team while I was working there.

And you might apply for a barista job, but end up with washing the dishes and the bathrooms.

Cafes should be a chill place to work and you should enjoy your time working in there, don’t ruin it for yourself.

Oh and for reference I have over 2 years of experience working in Melbourne as Barista/supervisor, you can believe me or try it for yourself.



Work/life balance is pretty much non existent as you are expected to work overtime constantly. If you do not, your shifts get cut without reason. People get hired and quit constantly because they are not compensated properly. There is no training plan in place and you are left to train yourself if you want to advance. Medical and dental benefits are not provides for full time staff. The discount is terrible

Upper management do not care to get to know the staff one on one like other places where I have worked. There are so many things wrong with the equipment and nothing gets done about ityet you are expected to perform 100%.

The store I worked at was ridiculously busy and we were always short staffed. If you worked a full shift you'd be exhauated by the end of the day. Only one 30 minute break per shift which was not long enough to get proper rest.

While a busy place, it is unrewarding and troublesome. Constant worry if job or location will still be open the next day. Management is often not properly trained. Only upside was the knowledge and training on machines; extensive and mostly worth the trouble. The hardest part of the job was the constant stress if one would still have a job the next day. There is no room for growing and experienced workers started at a lesser wage than those without. Only chance for any raise is an exam that does not allow anyone with health issues to pass by. Example: Mandatory tasting of mass quantaties of coffee that can irritate and set off health issues in certain employees. Management often leaves early without completing tasks meant for them or they delegate their own jobs to those without proper knowledge.

I worked at the cafe in Kerrisdale and really enjoyed it.  You recieve tips which is nice (though don't expect a lot, it's not like serving) . The manager was very understanding and accomodating with things such as requesting time off. It's not a strict atmosphere but also not laid-back, things like cleanliness and hard work are expected, especially when it gets very busy.  The people you work with are friendly and very supportive, it's not a toxic work envoirment by any means. You need to be okay working at a fast pace. I think it would be tiring and repetitive to work full time (but that's just my opion and others might disagree with me) but for part time work it's a great option. Also know when you start it sucks because for the first few shifts all you do is floor runs, but this is very brief. I would highly recomend this for someone in university wanting part time work.

I've worked many jobs, but none with as many changes to company policies, as much/frequent turn-over of staff, or as disorganized as this workplace. In the last 6 months of my employment, I was often working overtime and sometimes skipping breaks in order to complete all my tasks (I was doing the work of two+ people) as we were understaffed. Whenever I asked for support or to hire replacement staff for those that left without notice, I was just told repeatedly over the course of several months that they had hired people for our location. On the day they had finally started, I was let go without reason. Fortunately, by that point, I was just relieved to not have to work there anymore :)

As far as barista jobs go, Artigiano was good.  It was nice to find a place that put some focus on the artistry of coffee versus just slinging out drinks, but there was a lot of disorganization and lack of support from higher ups and general cafe management.  Also, there was only one half-hour break given if you worked 5.5 hours or more, and no fifteen minute breaks, so if you worked a five hour shift it was a long time to be on a concrete floor without anti-fatigue mats to make it comfortable.  Dress code can also be improved - white shirts and white shoes aren't practical for a coffee job, and I spent more money on replacing white shirts than I would have liked to.
