I enjoyed the patrons, their enthusiasm and energy made coming to work worthwhile.

I enjoyed the opportunity to have worked with true professionals, co-workers who taught me more about life and work than I would have imagined when I started.

Typically when I start my shift I firstly finding out what requirements am I needing to meet that day. This may include what the projected attendance is, demographics and any special rules or procedures. Than working within a team, prepare adequately for the given event. This includes cutting fruit for HI balls, counting stock, preparing the service areas for guest arrival, checking and replenishing products, anticipating needs before needed.

I have learned that good preparation, pride in ones work and self is equally as rewarding as a pay check. Smile; appreciate people, treats everyone with respect, no prejudging and it will be returned by whomever you’re engaging. Additionally I learned the power of being kind and saying thank you.

What I did not like about the work...
Poor systems enacted to effectively provide the best possible service for patrons.

Expectations not in line with the tools provided. Expect employees to provide excellent and prompt service to guests but don’t provide the tools or man power to insure that goal is accomplished. Example, No P.O.S. system, customers are waiting up to thirty minutes for their bill as staff calculate totals by hand and provide a hand written receipt. By not providing proper support to front line employees the organization cause patrons to wait an unreasonable amount of time for service.

No written employee contracts.

No written or communicated conflict resolution system in place.

Employee treatment is unequal when manager assigned duties. No expectations for some, high expectations for others.

Company policy is enforced unequally on employees. What is good enough for one is not for another.

Things I have been told by upper management:
“If we enforce all the rules for all employees we would have no staff.”
“The law does not apply to all people equally”

A culture from management that all employees are expendable, no one is of value.

I Love working for the Calgary Flames Hockey Club, serving the executive suites.  It is rewarding serving people that are as passionate about their jobs as you are theirs.  It is also greatly reassuring that many CEOs that enter the suites, are more humble and low maintenance than regular people.  I love to be the best of the best, and it is awesome to set up a suite like a private catering event,  and ensure that their liquor is always top notch, dirty plates are not seen, and everyone having a great time. Watching the kitchen produce 20k worth of food in an hour time frame can be stressful and impressive all at the same time.  The distance from some suites to the kitchen or beverage pantry can have a server running 10k by the time they get home.  It is truely amazing watching an event be set up and torn down. It is incredible how many people in this building know their role and know how to do it efficiently.   It is such a rewarding job, and I would recommend it to anyone that loves dealing with high volumes of people.

Good working environment and flexible, downside is lack of regular work when there are no events. benefits and perks could be better. Event based work means long hours for some shifts and short ones for other shifts. Staffing turnover is frequent because not everyone can handle the scheduling. Pay rates are scaled and dependent on a budget. over all the environment can be rewarding if you are an adaptable person with energy.

The work environment was a fun one. Never boring, due to a combination of work load and colleagues. Surrounded by professionals at work, including players and management.

I learned not to work for the Flames. You would think it should be a great place and fun environment seeing as it is meant to be a place of entertainment. Nope! It's shocking. Management is bullying and directors are weak and ineffective. HR practically encourages the bullying.

Cane be stressful at times especially which department you're involved with. It is an event based environment so expect large crowds, intoxicated people, loud music, cheering etc.

good experience where I felt confident in my abilities and was able to work mostly on my own and had the support that I would do a good job. Any questions I had were easily answered and I felt confident in my position.

Stay away from the kitchen

get to meet new people and join team players, some games are busier so we work with more staff ,co-workers are very respectful, management very helpful when short staff

A great part time job for hockey fans, enthusiasm is a must. There are people there only for a pay cheque, so if you love the Flames and want to see them win another cup, join so they can let go of the dead weight.
