I worked closely with this agency before on an external basis, so being given the chance to apply and work internally was a cool experience. I have nothing but positive things to say about the community case management team & housing programs specifically working closely with the housing programs of Y4R and AHRP. Their team management and team itself is amazing and wants to see you grow and succeed. If you want to make a meaningful difference in supporting folks with justice involvement and their navigation in community, resource connection and collaboration and are a strong advocate for folks then apply for the housing programs :) It provided me knowledge on the sector of social justice but allowed me to fufill my passion in connection with this population in a specific category.



The Calgary John Howard society is a forward thinking agency that builds strength and trust between and among employees, management, clients, community and stakeholders. It is a privilege to work with this group and I would highly recommend involvement with the agency from prospective employers, donors and stakeholders.

The most difficult part of the job is watching clients who really wish to succeed fall down due to lack of community and government supports. On the flip side, the most enjoyable part is watching people succeed, both staff ad clients.

The management is strong and very staff supportive. I learned a great deal about management, professionalism, empathy, the culture of non--judgmental thinking and what most people need to lead a healthy and successful existence.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I like being able to help people and give them recourses to help with their success. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Turn around. No one stays for long, they always move on to something better. So many grey areas, never black or white. Client treatment and resources are never consistence. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Stressful.  Always training new people while trying to do job.  Managers seem to be cliquey.

I was very fortunate to work at CJHS. My time there was extremely well used,I had great team members. the hardest part of my job was working with the the youth. it was extremely heart breaking to see such young people in these lifestyles. That was the great part of my job was, i was given the opportunity to help them and try and give them what services they needed short and long term.

Practicum placement with the Calgary John Howard Society in the Extended Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder project; Assist client with achieving the goals in community; perform outreach with by connecting client with community resources; assist client with learning and performing daily living tasks while dealing with their disability; learned about FASD and the reality of the disability; coordinate the FASD support group

There is no cultural diversity amongst staff. Everyone seems to be from the same race, plus management is not organized and some staff can be seen smoking with clients almost encouraging their habits. Some staff are good at gossiping their colleagues to team leaders instead of sorting things out with their colleagues.

I absolutely love working for CJHS. They offer a great work/life balance, and very much want to see their staff develop themselves in their roles.  Coworkers are amazing and we all support each other through the tough work we do. Our frontline staff have incredibly challenging roles, and we are so lucky to have the level of care we do from the staff to our clients. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
The culture of this agency is amazing! Very supportive and they do an incredible job of being inclusive.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The nature of the work is stressful, as with any social serving agency and role.

Staff are overworked and underpaid. Management does not manage anything very well and no mentoring is done with staff. There is no standardized review intervals and you can go years without an official review or raise. Concerns fall on deaf ears and work ethic is not rewarded or recognized by any level of management.
