What can I say, I love teaching. Every term is a new challenge: whether it's a new course or new students for a previous course, there's endless variety.

Since I was new to teaching after a couple of decades in industry, each course requires a large amount of preparation time: writing lecture notes in my own voice, re-learning material I haven't touched in 30 years, and thinking about how best to present difficult material. Lots of late nights working on Powerpoints, assignments, marking, and lecture notes, but I love every minute of it.

One of the perks of the job is that apart from scheduled lectures and labs, you can work whenever it suits you best. For me, that means working a lot of evenings and weekends, but with ample free time during the day to take care of other priorities.

The department is supportive, and I have nothing to complain about. The only critique I have is that it's a little too easy for an instructor to coast if they feel like it. Once you're in, performance reviews are pretty much pro forma. 

I very much enjoy working at Camosun College…. The interaction between the Faculty and student body is very rewarding… Every day brings new challenges; the students seem to find different ways to approach problems, which challenges our knowledge.   I enjoy the day to day activity as it has some semblance of order as we manage the network, student access, and ensure that all the resources that are required by faculty to present their labs is available and fully functional…  This sometimes presents scheduling problems as the Mechanical Engineering or the Computer Sciences Departments also put demands on our resources.  Each and every day is different and we also find satisfaction in being able to have solutions ready for the staff, and faculty when situations present themselves.. The only downside to the job is that the I feel the wage is somewhat lower than one would expect for what we do and the amount of student contact we have

Daily paperwork, scheduling, training, maintenance,inventory, shipping, receiving, disciplinary actions in a Union environment, banking, marketing and supervision of 32 staff all while maintaining an effect food and labour cost to be profitable. 

I learned that a positive environment develops a a positive team to work with.

I received all the training and support for my District Manger he was great!

The hardest thing would have to be implement new items and strategies with the staff. Some are very reluctant to change but change is sometimes necessary for success.

Starting up the Starving Student Program, recycling program and Christmas for a student family they were all a success and made me very proud of not only myself but all my staff.

The students are great, class sizes are refreshingly moderate. Colleagues are nice but their antipathy towards administrators has proven to be well founded. Lots of animosity between administrators and the faculty union is toxic and office staff are so overwhelmed that it's difficult to receive on-boarding guidance and an ongoing pay issue has gone unaddressed for three weeks now in spite of several attempts on my part to contact people to help resolve. Peopleseem unhappy and unproductive. I have worked at other colleges and universities and I'm paid about 60% of what I was paid for my last term contract at a different school (I have a PhD, which impacts pay so it could have been even worse)

Sadly, a decade of under-funding of public education has gutted this college like so many other institutions in the province.  The result includes an administration that is perpetually at war with the unions.  The grievances pile to the sky while morale sinks.  Teaching excellence is paid lip-service, but there is no accountability other than in the counting of beans to balance budgets.  Students deserve far better.    

Tone deaf administration confuses an archaic and authoritarian management style with progressive and creative leadership.

I amazed at the amount of inefficiencies and and self serving decision making that happens at an institution of this size and age.  The crew of people I work with and the other crews that make up facilities services are a great group of people.  It's just the amount of mistakes that we have to deal with from payroll/HR on a regular basis is unexeptable.  And then there is people in lower and higher up positions that do not deminstrate very little to no knowledge or experience in the jobs they have been hired for. . . And we are expected to rely on these people for our lovelyhoods.  

The job was a great way of learning the same material taught to me in the ICS program by providing and receiving the same material from a different point of view.

I was able to help new students comprehend material, and in turn allow me to review and understand the material from a new perspective. I believe that teaching what I learned during my program can definitely enhance the my understanding of the material,

Great way to converse with different groups and have a better relationship with my professors.

The automotive instructors went above and beyond to help me be successful 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Being prepared for teach the classes and getting the projects together. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I enjoyed working there but the hd department needs a lot of funding for projects

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Be there at 7am , prepare for class at 8am , in class until 10/10:30… then in shop for the rest of the day

I enjoyed my position so much, I stayed in it for 27 years. I was very supported as technology changed, and my department grew. Camosun is a great employer for work/life balance (although this may vary a bit by manager), and this definitely helps to offset the average or slightly less than average pay. Understanding your collective agreement goes a long way towards a successful and supported career.

Overall a good sense of community and services. A typical day involved answering emails, going to meetings, and interfacing with instructors, staff and students. I learned important time management skills there along with technical elements of the servers. The culture is positive, driven, but supportive. The hardest part of the job was multi-tasking when multiple clients were needing support. The most enjoyable part of the job was the community.
