Camp Muskoka

This place for the most part is awesome place to work. Where else can a teenager or young adult work, and willing wake at the crack of dawn (often 6:00 am) and want to work? I like to think of Camp Muskoka as a paid summer vacation, with slight bit more responsibility. Highlights of my summer with them include: Flying down a zipline, singing awful Brittany Spears karaoke with a co-worker, Sock Wrestling and leading caveman training. Now back to the serious part, The job is easy, provided you can keep a watchful eye on the kids, and refrain from intoxication during the 8 weeks of camp. The hardest part of the camp is between the occasional poorly behaved camper (some do have "issues", and not the ones solved with tissues) , and leaving the friends you'll make at end of the summer. Biggest and only major issue is the amount of time it take to be paid. I left in august and received my final corrective check in January. Also pay is hard to judge as room/board, meals, and full laundry service (wash and fold) is included.

I worked here for 2 consecutive summers as a camp counsellor, I had a great time and made lots of friends. Regardless of how fun the environment is at times, counsellors are underpaid and the hiring process is biased. Camp Muskoka is too focused on expansion and getting more money than on individual camper experience and organization/ease of running activities. They keep building new cabins and allowing more children in without expanding essential buildings that are used daily, resulting in cramped conditions, missing campers, and unnecessary stress for counsellors and children alike. ALSO, the food quality has drastically declined over the years. Anyways, despite the negatives it is still a fun place to work and I valued my time there.

Amazing atmosphere, all your coworkers genuinely care about each others well being as well as delivering an amazing experience for the kids we look after. By far the best bosses I've ever had, they were fair, kind, would compromise, and made it their job for you to have as much fun as the children. I learned valuable leadership qualities (from the leadership program I worked in), as well as basic survival skills, and great people skills with people ages 8-60+. They provided opportunities to show your skills, responsibility, and innovate within the work environment. 10/10 I would recommend anyone who works with the public should have at least one experience here.

Sure, the pay wasn't incredible, but it was my first job out of high school, and was only a summer commitment. You live on camp grounds and get 3 meals a day, 1 day off a week, and access to the beautiful camp, including a lake, archery, soccer field, high/low ropes, mountain biking, canoes and kayaks, and so much more. When you break down the hourly wage, it's not much, but it's a great experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
I made lifelong friends here, though not every staff member was great. There were definitely some clique issues amongst the staff that had worked there the previous summer. It was long days (7am-bedtime, and then after if you were on night duty watching the kids), but if you WEREN'T scheduled to watch the kids overnight, you had evenings off, which was great staff bonding time.

The salary I gained was good, however depending on what role (e.g counsellor) your pay will be considerably less, so don't expect to save a lot when working here, unless you can live below your means. 
Bracebridge is an expensive town to live in and has high inflation rates with all the tourism and low housing availabilities. 
If there are options to live at camp- Do it!. 
I miss my camp family, I had a lovely time working there especially in the fall months. If you have your own vehicle that is very beneficial.  

A typical day at work with camp muskoka consists of around 6:30am-7;00am wake-up followed by breakfast and then the start of the shift until I was punched out. I learned how to communicate more efficient within the workplace in a formal manner as well as learned to cook full meals and prepare activities or events for the campers in cabins. The environment of the workplace is very upbringing and the employees are very welcoming and respecftul, definetly a career I would pursue in the future!

The staff were fun and driven to keep children safe and having fun through inclusive, age appropriate activities. There was very little strategic direction provided to the staff and culture suffered with poor leadership from the camp founder/owner. Staff turnover was high and salaries are not in line with the hours worked. Living on site for most staff provided very little work life balance. The perks were living in a beautiful and remote part of Muskoka and having a physically active, hands on job. Constant problem solving and working with children kept you on your toes! 


I worked as a camp counsellor last summer and I honestly felt like i went to prison for 3 months. Pay was awful considering you are working 24/7 with only 1 day off. On your day off no bus service is provided into town so you must pay a high fee for a taxi as the camp is in an isolated area. You never had your own space and staff had cliques. I slept in a tent all summer which was never mentioned prior to coming. The only enjoyable part was working with some amazing children. Would not recommend working here at all , an awful place for your mental health.

This workplace is a fun, challenging and cooperative environment, exposing my skills to their highest potential. This environment made it such a great experience. I met new people, some life long friends, and had the opportunity to take care of kids and expose them to new hobbies, and showing them to step out of their comfort zone. Overall it was an amazing place to work at.

Waking up early. All meals buffet style ever changing menu. Beautiful outdoor spaces. Exciting and fun work environment. Helpful and friendly co-workers and bosses. Working hard to make sure all participants are safe having fun and make it to the next activate on time. Seeing the smiling kids faces and knowing that i am good at what i do.
