Canadian Institute for Health Information

Worked here for 7 years and loved it until recently.

Since the return to office started it has turned into an increasing toxic work environment. They do employee surveys and then blatantly disregard the results. All previous flexibility is gone, archaic policies like checking access cards to check who is in office when. If you voice any concerns or advocate for your staff you are told to "toe the line" or there will be consequences by HR.  

It feels like a dictatorship where you don't dare speak out otherwise your job or future prospects are in danger. 

Previously it was a trusting, flexible and
really engaging workplace. There was some annoying bureaucracy but I overall really positive atmosphere and would have recommended it to anyone.

Recommend staying away until there is a leadership change as it is not a happy place to work right now. Employees' mental health is suffering and you will not be treated like human by senior management.

Overall, I really enjoy working for this organization. Given that I'm not in a leadership position, there is absolutely minimal stress. You will experience this if you do your job, submit them on time, and absolutely have to be a self-started (you will get support along the way). However, your experience may vary from department to department depending on who your lead/manager is. It is true that career progression is slow, but if you're looking for stability and work-life balance, then this is the right organization for you. 

This is a very unhealthy environment. They are trying to restructure but it is all cosmetic. If you are a person happy with status quo and not frustrated but red tape then you could be happy here. It is a department where you have no decision making ability and be prepared to have you work completely redone as it passes through the layers of reviews. People in Team Lead Positions are not a fit for the role. They preach they are all about staff but they really aren't. They also do not deal with personal issues. 
The rest of the company does amazing work and has really fantastic people but work life balance is challenging due to workload and timelines but the program areas do amazing work!

CIHI is a great place for someone to start their career as it builds solid analytical skills. There are opportunities for junior staff to move across teams and learn about new databases, etc.; however, it is very difficult to move up as people in more senior roles (lead/manager) have been there for a while. There used to be a budget for learning and professional development which was nice.    

There is a great attempt to create a better work life balance, however, you have to map out and put in your hours for every project/work you're doing so that CIHI can map out where our resources are being used.

This can be nerve racking at times. The hardest part of the job is probably the red tape and long chain of approvals needed for the littlest thing. There is no autonomy. However, CIHI seems to be a catalyst for growth so if you'd like to learn by jumping into the deep end it is the place to be. 

 Supported internal and external users with CIHI.  Fixed various login and rights issues with user accounts admin work.  Configured VPN for clients at home.  Widows 7 deployment.  Lead I.T. contact during flood relief in CIHI main office.  Management of I.T. equipment storage.  Dealt with all types of various software and hardware issues related to all systems.  Updating and detailing documentation.  Other tasks include: Computer equipment decommissioning and disposal, Keyfob/token deactivations, system optimizations, computer imaging and virus removal.

CIHI is a very nice place to work with great people, salaries and benefits.  Learned something new all the time.  The workplace is clean, quiet so you can concentrate on your work but also very social with TGIF's, outdoor BBQ's and Euchre tournaments.  The management and departmental teams continually provides updates with Small Talks, Town Halls and presentations of work.   Worked on contract and would love to be permanent. If there is an opportunity to work there again I would be more than happy to return.

Job security, retention, management was very stressful

The people that I worked with were the very best. They were always willing to teach and be supportive.

Meaningful work, productive and interesting

- the executive team and human resources team are very negative and create a very exclusive environment; if you do not belong, they will cancel you and force you out.

- this government position was filled with bad behaviour and where ethics do not exist.

- you will feel less than human working for this employer.

I’ve worked at CIHI for over 6 years. My boss is wonderful, she’s supportive while allowing autonomy and opportunities for you to learn and grow. Work-life balance is respected here, and my team are flexible and understanding. They have been trying to be more transparent with staff, and I appreciate the effort. Our CEO seems like a nice guy who just wants the best for the organization.
