Canadian Military

In any combat-oriented profession, you begin your career building a foundation of knowledge and basic military skills. Once you're trained enough and posted to your first unit, there's a large shift and you will find the experience will change significantly. 

The things you train for initially may not come into practical application for an extended period of time, so you will spend a lot of time doing refresher activities with your unit. 

When there "isn't anything to do", do your best to make everyone LOOK busy. Finishing a task is not typically rewarded with relaxation - there will be other work FOUND for you to do. 

Almost every long weekend will be extra long - most units will dish out additional "short" leave days to give troops a bone. Say hello to 5 days of May24!

Learn how to write a good memo. Expect memos to get turned around at each level of leadership in the chain, because everyone "writes differently". 

Get familiar with the CanForgens and the rule books - advocate for yourself whenever you can. If you're not comfortable advocating for yourself (it's hard sometimes), advocate for others (it's always easier). You don't have to be in a leadership position to begin leading. 

Each and every day you learn so much and do something different. In the military you are always learning something new. The leadership is always there to help and guild you in anyway possible. Favorite part of the job has to be the constant change, the hard work with the satisfaction of doing something more with life. The training its self is very rewarding. The hardest part of this job or career path is probably the amount of hard physical work involved. In the military you are constantly being meet with challenges that must be overcome. Either it be in the field or on course and  or during deployment.

There really not a typical day at the military as we had a different layout everyday. However, I learned a lot by being part of the military for five years. I learned situation awareness, using the proper chain of command, being on time , discipline, and effective communication. 

Hardest part of the job was being able to do the job still at 100% with hardly any sleep. It is physically demanding, but when the body does not receive enough rest , sometimes it may push someone on the edge of quitting. But the military teaches you to never quit.

Military training forces individuals to learn to work as a team, rely on each other, build relationships, recognize each others gifts, talents and abilities as well as strengths and weaknesses.  Teaches survival skills in a hostile and volatile environment and to respect and obey the chain of authority as well as the rules that are set out for the purpose of accomplishing the mission.

For the last 7 years I was Finance Admin and the first 10 years I was a Field Engineer.

There were multiples of tasks to perform and you learned something new everyday.

The management was typical military.  Orders were followed.

Hardest part of the job was when I was in charge of the families of the lost soldiers in Afganistan in 2006-2007

Good friends were made

10 years as a regular force NCM. I experienced slot of things some good some bad. Over all it was good. I recommend getting a job in the military that has civilian job force equivalents, so after retirement from the military you have qualifications to fallback on. 

Trained to excel. This is a commitment given by each member of the Canadian Forces. Selfless acts to ensure safety and preservation of life in various conflicts around the world. You are made to understand that your contribution is without reward and that a world of peace is priceless.

I worked as an MSE Op for 3 years and 2 years as an Ocean Op.
I left the Military because my Spouse at the time as posted at the West Coast and I was on the East Coast. To preserve my marriage at the time I opted to leave the Forces.

The Military is a fast-paced, disciplined environment where most people can be successful. It demands a mental and physical toughness to be able to make it through initial training, however the payoff from all the hard work put in is a feeling like no other.

It was my dream as a kid to join the military, specifically the armored  corps. I was a driver, gunner, and radio operator in many different vehicles. I enjoyed the ranges the most and guard duty the least. I served 6 months in Bosnia but missed the other overseas postings.
