Easily the worst part of the job is the constant micro managing and it has gotten worse since COVID.  They will promise you base accounts but it’s 95% hunt.  Printers are a declining market and the competitors seem to always have lower prices.  Base pay is very low and they combine your car allowance in there so if you are unlucky and get a territory far away then you are on the losing end every time.  Commissions are not much better it’s only a couple hundred dollars per copier.  Benefits are mediocre at best, you buy into it with your health spending account and in the end your HSA doesn’t exist. As a sales rep you are required to usher the entire sales process all the way to training the customer, this takes away a lot of your time to go out and sell and then they wonder why sales are down. There is far more admin work involved than actual selling.  Lots of red tape with HQ in Ontario and very hard to get approvals.  They make you generate daily excel reports and crm updating that management doesn’t actually look at but require you to do so anyways so they can “see” you are “working”, huge waste of time again.  As a commercial rep start off selling to small businesses that don’t really need or care for printers and if you are lucky you get a sale it’s just 1-2 units a month (after being turned away 100-200 times).  If you make it to corporate sales then it is more comfortable and pays better BUT there are hybrid corporate-lite reps there who eats away at your medium sized business sales in YOUR assigned territory in turn making it harder for you to move up. Very high turn over rate. Most of the management are comprised of previous sales reps that are now on a power trip. I honestly wish someone was this brutally honest with me before I started working here, you can’t make this stuff up.  BEWARE.  If you are prepared to do more admin work than selling, ok with minimum wage level base salary, constantly being micro managed, pay your own benefits, gas, and maintenance, make 30+ calls a day AND make a detailed report about every call, rake in a few hundred dollars a month in commission, lose big fish to “corporate” reps, get “managed” by unqualified managers then THIS JOB IS FOR YOU. 

  First thing I would ask In the interview is the average length of the employees. I have been here long enough to see employees come and go. Canon will hire anyone with a pulse and try and teach them to be a sales rep. The average day as a sales rep is spent writing reports and build spreadsheets documenting your day. If you spend 4 hours seeing clients you spend 5 filling reports. The sales process takes months to finalize and is dependent on a number of factors. One approvals so many approvals. Some of the approvals are even done by people not associated with the sales process at all.  The amount of effort to ensure that the documentation involved in making the sale and the number of reports that are required the pay off is very small. A 300$ commission after months of work and travel and parking doesn't amount to much of anything in the end. 

The management team is made up of older sales reps or service reps that have stuck around long enough to climb the ladder. But they lack any real ability as managers. The company as a whole is made up of different division and groups that don’t work together. Each one has its on agenda and trying to navigate it is near impossible. 

Another thing to consider is that with the supply chain crisis you will often try and sell equipment that is months or weeks away. So be ready to not get paid for sometime after you finalize a sale. And for customer to cancel a sales since a piece of equipment is sometimes not on the horizon. 

The hiring team will sell you on the idea of canon as a corporate powerhouse but it’s not. I REGRET leaving a very high paying sales job to come to work here. Because I was told that advancement and recognition was a motivating factor in my move. In my first 4 months I was not allowed to call or visit customer until the manager had time to travel with me. I came here with 8 solid years of sales experience. So anyone reading this stop and think very hard about coming to work here.  

I recently experienced firsthand the detrimental effects of the new management team and it's safe to say that my impression is far from positive. Under their leadership, the workplace environment has become fraught with uncertainty, lack of direction, and an alarming disregard for employee well-being.

One of the most glaring issues with the new management is their lack of reliability. It's clear that they are struggling to establish a cohesive vision for the company, leading to confusion and frustration among employees. Their indecisiveness has resulted in constant changes in priorities and strategies, leaving employees feeling like they are constantly chasing moving targets.

What's even more concerning is the arbitrary nature of their decision-making when it comes to employment. Despite meeting or exceeding key performance indicators (KPIs) and sales targets, employees are not safe from the threat of termination. The new management seems to view firing employees as a casual and arbitrary exercise of power, with no regard for the impact it has on individuals and their livelihoods.

There is no guarantee of fair compensation for hard work and dedication. Rather than rewarding employees for their achievements, the new management has resorted to increasing annual targets without offering any corresponding increase in salary or benefits. This blatant disregard for employee morale and financial stability is both demoralizing and unjust.

Not a bad place to start if you are newer in the sales industry. However, it is selling printers. The printer industry is definitely on the decline, and working in this industry is not for someone who wants to make decent commission checks. The base salary is fairly low for comparable positions.

Especially in the commercial markets, you do not have a lot of options on who you can sell to, and a lot of those businesses aren't going to spend a lot of money on a printer. This makes it tough to find opportunities. 

The main thing I was disappointed in is that they said it would be a fully remote position, where you would only need to come into the office as needed, however, that changed to mandatory two days in the office.  This isn't a major deal, but be careful if you are hoping for a fully remote position.

Lastly, this job is very similar to territory sales, where you will manage a territory based on postal codes. You are expected to do a lot of cold calling and a lot of administrative work if you are working on a deal. This is very time-consuming and becomes draining after a little while. It is tough to start the sales process, and once you do it often fails because of time or other outlying factors.

All in all, it's a good company, but the position itself isn't great for someone who is trying to make decent money.

TLDR: Low pay, high expectations, not easy sales, dying industry.

My review for Canon is one that may take sometime to explain.My experience grew with the job as time went on. I had daily interact with customers and various clients that did much business with our company. My telephone experience of calling customers and billing them for service contracts for their Canon equipment built an awesome and rewarding communication for the company. i also had a great and friendly team as we worked closely together getting the job done, which made month end closings quite rewarding.I may also say the management team was helpful and tried every effort to get each person to learn as much as possible while paying attention to details. I called and billed over 200 customers each day sending out invoices information while handling other tasks. This job had given me my first great experience in working in this environment for over twelve years....Not forgetting the hardest part of the job was to get a client to co-operate and communicate, once you have bonded in that way it makes the job easier. That also had become the most enjoyable part of the job and meet my month-end quota quite rewarding.

Canon Canada Inc's strengths are it's people, the everyday support group and front line sales force. A typical day would include working with representatives from several different lines of business. This collaborative approach, although not always supported by upper management, was the best way to ensure customer satisfaction.

The hardest part of achieving success was dealing with several levels of red tape and an administrative group that was located out of province. These difficulties combined with Executive level deficiency's made it a challenge to grow customer base.

The most enjoyable part of the job was also the hardest, that was retaining business and growing customer relationships from a corporate aspect. The most enjoyable aspect was the ability to foster customer relationships both internal and external that still hold true post employment.

In the Business Solutions Credit department, there being two out of six employees on sick leave and vacation. The department was swamped. Unfortunately that left very little time for training.

My different accesses  to the programs needed to complete my tasks was not available until the 3rd week of my one month contract.

Canon was a team I enjoyed being part of. My co-workers were very helpful, courteous but again quite swamped.

What I learned is that I love this type of position because of the constant contact with the clients and the philosophy and energy that was communicated by the CEO of  Canon Canada Inc.,was very refreshing , a zen approach with his employees, which made me feel comfortable.

The most enjoyable part of my job is my staff!  I have had the pleasure of managing a great team who are dedicated to their jobs, loyal to the Canon brand and believe in the future of the organization.  
Struggles include a flat hierarchy as well as the inability to easily communicate upward, and outside, of one's current business structure within the organization.
The hardest part of the job is not being able to influence change. 
I enjoy working for Canon and would readily recommend as a place of employment.  The organization remains on the cutting edge of new technologies and places a lot of emphasis on maintaining a strong brand image.

Canon is a great company however, the photocopier sales division is severely out of touch with the market. They push hard on over priced machines sold from Canon but allow their own dealers to undercut them. They then turn to the sales person and say,  "Why can't you sell this?". 
Their outdated sales portal looks like something out of 1998; and is not effective at achieving sales goals. 
Associates are drastically under paid, asked to drive long distances, and  are often left paying out of pocket just to accomplish the goals. 
The management seems to be afraid of their senior leadership that is humorously flawed in their approach, and refuses to say anything about it. In 2018, they have 0 online support in marketing their products.

To be fair, maybe I was overqualified, but I really don’t think so. This is for Dispatch position.
It took about two weeks before somebody called me when I applied. I even forgot I applied. Once someone called me it took another two weeks to actually get the first interview and then another week after that for a group interview. It was very intense. It was just a very long process for I guess an entry-level position over there.
I did get the position, but for 40 hours a week the salary was extremely low. I have seen this position at least five times in the last six months on indeed.
I decided to decline that in the end. All the people in their interview were really nice and I’m sure I would’ve love to work with that team but the team doesn’t pay bills. My salary does.
