Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board

Cape Breton Victoria School Board was far too politically led and had far too many chiefs that spread the attention in far too many directions. The people that I worked with in a direct contact way were all good people and had far more dedication to their jobs than was seen or appreciated by those running the  actual show. Money was spent in directions that made sense on a political level but not directed at those that mattered, the students. Programming was haphazard and poorly judged. While teachers did their very best to deal with what they were asked to teach the constant harassment of those people on the front lines of teaching by those that governed created a constant air of distrust and discontent!
   I loved teaching and had a true love for what happened in my classroom but the governing of the process was a failure.

Morning routine:
Open office, set up day for substitute teachers, open offices of Principal, Vice Principals.  Go through fax machine to and give to appropriate departments.  Answer phones.  

Mid Morning routine
Attendance for staff and students, both entered into computer system and spreadsheet.  Answer phones, type letters, handle money, do deposits from day before.

Afternoon routine
answer phones, get ready for next day.  Prepare for student dismissal.  Interact with people coming and going from office, 

Hardest part of the job - leaving it.
most Enjoyable part of the job - the people you meet and get to work with.  forming a bond and feeling like you are creating a positive and inviting atmosphere.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The kids I worked with and relationship I built w some of them, the parents, and few good teachers.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Racist teachers who let it be known that they were better than me for my culture.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Colonialized and narrow minded.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy and lots of work to do on policy and the oppressive views needs to be revised and decolonized

 Most start off casual and you need to be able to "weather the storm" (ex. school closures for pandemic reasons, or otherwise). There was no initially training, just learn as you go. But there are people you are able to call for technical support that are very helpful and willing.

I was a substitute teacher with the school board who enjoyed some periods of full time work (3-6 months) in the same classroom. It was a busy schedule but the students made it enjoyable and very rewarding. However, there was little to no opportunity for full-time/contract position.

Arrrived in morning ready for bus kids or kids that walk,ensuring safety and patrol the school grounds.Lunch time and after school involved cleaning ,keeping order,and head count,.and ensure students got on the right bus.

Responsible for day to day operation of two elementary schools.  Answering phone, fax, emails, filing, memos, and correspondence.  Also responsible for two payrolls using the SAP payroll system and Cash Net for all the banking. Efficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, Publisher, and Power Point.

Very rewarding, enjoyable, challenging job. As a working parent the hours were great as well as vacation time. Summers off, Christmas off, March break and all other holidays off with your kids. 
Salary was good but only 27.5 hours a week maximum available.

Ensure safety for students being attentive and conscientuous
Teach children conflict resolution skills
Winter time was more difficult,more safety issues

I supervise the children in the school yard and make sure they are safe at all times, and then the day is over and I make sure they all get on their buses for home.
