I worked at Capilano University as a sessional instructor and laboratory supervisor (non-regular) for about a year. My colleagues and the management in my department were absolutely fantastic! There were lots of opportunities for faculty engagement and extracurriculars. In my experience, the students who attend CapU are generally intelligent, engaged and driven.  I really enjoyed working there and the work itself was quite rewarding. The experience of working at CapU was very beneficial for my career. 

However, the primary purpose of work is to be able to pay your bills, which this job did not do. After calculating for time spent preparing lectures, modifying labs, marking tests/assignments, and student contact time, the pay worked out to be approximately $20/hour (after calculating for the cost of travel to/from campus and parking, this dropped to about $16/hour). This is far less than what I was making in grad school and about five times less than what I was making for doing the same work at neighbouring institutions. I used my income at my other jobs to supplement my work at CapU.

There is superb potential at this school, but the non-regular employees' benefits and wages are egregious for the level of education (PhD) and time input required for these positions. (It is my understanding that regular employees receive a much higher rate of pay.)

If you're looking for a good experience and CV building, CapU is excellent! If you're looking for a livable wage/salary this may not be the place for you.

This university claims to be all about promoting Indigenous culture and diversity yet somehow the ENTIRE upper leadership (including the First Nations Department) is composed of white people. The upper management is incompetent and apathetic to the average new employee and will only back whoever is nearest to suck up to them. There is no organization or workflow or being rewarded for hard work. University claims your evaluations are based on performance when in reality it is all about power politic and senior HR talking behind your back and judging you superficially rather than objectively and with due process. There is a lot of backstabbing by that Department and many in the most senior positions need to be removed or fired. Just don't buy into the façade that this a fine place to work and that it is a fantastic "opportunity" to work here. 

It's enjoy to work at this place because working hours is 7 hours and after 4 pm only few people stay in the office. If working hours compared to my previous companies, I used to work until late around midnight and had tight deadline. Everyday was rush time, full of meeting and some reports need to be submitted. So, it's a good place to have more time for family or social activities outside the office.
I learned Canadian working style (actually depends on the character of the individual, office environment, work pressure in the office because it's similar with my previous experiences) such as communications if different ideas or giving compliment, handling the conflict, discussion, couching, etc.
I don't have any difficulty to accomplish my task. I enjoy to work in the company. No pressure and people like to smile :)

I liked my role but not the style of the managers and supervisors because of their lack of experience, leadership and collaboration.
My role could’ve been rewarding role but I was working with individuals who have no clue what they were doing, and I felt withdrawn and disappointed. I worked with a supervisor who had no idea what the work entailed; and made no efforts to collaborate and support the team. There was always people talking about each other behind their backs and bringing on negative energy at the work place, which is what drove me away. 
This university’s academic advising unit needs a lot of work and training. It is a crucial part of student success and they lack quality. I was amused with the level of u professionalism I experienced on a daily basis. I couldn’t cope with a culture, where there was so much of negative energy. 

Everyone who I have met working here is so great and really puts there heart into their work. I recognize that there is a strike going on and it is a challenging time but The people in the office here are working tirelessly to prepare for their employees return to work. They seem to genuinely care about the wellbeing of their folks. There is a lot of work to be done in terms of process and moving things forward but there is an eagerness to do so and an autonomy to be creative. I don't feel like my suggestions are ever shot down. There is a culture shift going on right now and it is a positive one!

Overall Capilano University is a great place to work. It's nestled in a very pretty area just off the highway. Capilano University has a large student body of over 9000 a year but it meets these demands extremely well with a very professional staff base. Capilano University was one of the largest IT departments I have worked with so far and despite it's size it remained strongly cohesive which I have to say impressed me greatly during the time I worked there. I was sad to leave and still keep in touch with some of the good people of CapU. I would recommend CapU to anyone.

Senior management is a disaster. There is a general us and them climate between academia and management. The contractual arrangement between  exempt staff and the employer changed and there have been a rash of firings in the past.  The entire management team changed in all departments.  The friendly environment of a small, local university that supports students not yet ready for mega-higher-education is completely gone and replaced with the international student paper mill.

There has been much change at CapU and the excitement of seeing projects take shape is amazing. One person can make a huge difference and make things happen and are fully supported by leadership. The people and community are really what makes CapU stand out for me, I feel lucky that I get to work here every day. Beautiful campus and lots of well-being focus is a bonus. Benefits are fantastic and do help to offset salary expectations within the industry. I've learned that you can use your initiative here and roll with ideas, definitely an employer that appreciates individual talents and strengths.

Like one other reviewer says, people are only there for the pension or the money, or they are part of the problem.Toxic culture. Unfriendly or insecure and hostile department heads/ coordinators, and union mentality eveywhere - to the detriment of students!!! People have been out of their industry/ workplace so long that they don't realize that their behaviour is not acceptable at work. Unique work cultures - not in a good way. Very poor leadership on many levels. Lacks feel of a university despite the nice scenery. Beautiful scenery is plentiful in the lower mainland.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Projects move slowly, lots of red tape and administrative delays. I was promised a permanent position but that never happened and I didn't find out about it until I got a notice from HR about my contract ending, my manager never had that conversation with me. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Lots of tension between unions and administration, lots of mistrust
