It appeared to be a promised place from a great interview where they promised room advancement, growth, training, and safety. Unfortunately in my own experience none came true. I had to deal with some people that appeared brought their own personal problems, life frustrations to work, needed to release those problems and frustrations with someone and felt that someone was me the new hire. Some people inside companies like Carmacks need to realize if you applied and showed you had a solid resume with previous work stability,  you are offered and accepted the job is because you where promised all in the hiring process and that you are trying to make a living,  pay your bills, put some food on the table, you showed up every scheduled day and tried your best for then a few “big guys” decide to get rid of you because they didn’t like you. Once again I can only say from my own personal experience, I felt they hire you pretty much treating full time employee as a seasonal worker.  Do not get blindsided by their beautiful words said in the interview because it will most likely be a seasonal (90 day waste of time) Only apply if you are really  considering taking a risk and looking for seasonal (90 day) and screwing your once solid resume for future job applications.

Going into work you never know what your day with consist of, some days may be harder then others. 

Working as a sub contractor for the provincial government gives employees a comfortable feeling know that they have good job Securement. 

Management may favour employees who are hard workers and strive to move up in the company vs people who aren't/don't. 

Great work life balance as you technically work 6 months out of year and have 6 months off. (Depending on your position; area of work. Not all employees are on the schedule but most are.) 

Very friendly employees, great foremans and open door policy to the front off. 

Great benefits with Merit Contractors Association, Rrsp match dollar for dollar up to a certain amount. 

This company has there negatives just like any other company, but all in all is a very good company to work for, especially if you are starting out in the industry.

Every day was different working for Valley Traffic Systems: from job placement ,co-workers , crew and public to weather changing and length of work. Challenging and fun. I learned to be : better team player, teacher, leader, ready for anything life throws at me. Management was very personable and caring. Co-workers :over 300 people were all different and I did get along whit allot of them we helped each other and acted as family. Hardest days or nights in the job was the long hours in the summer 14-16 per day for months at the time. I loved the challenges and how nice is to feel needed to train new people and turn them into good and safe on the road workers knowing that they all have families to go home to at the end of the day.

As a maintenance employee you have unlimited job security as the contracts are for the next few years, Good people to work with, good scale of work, My super visor has been extremely understanding of any personal issues along with work issues, Pay is pretty good when I got hired starting wage was 28.49,  Very safety oriented company as well, Safety takes priority over completion of work,  Very relaxed work zone with lots of knowledgeable and kind co workers.

Good place to work with a great schedual

I work in the calgary location as a operator/ laborer some times the job detail can change from day to day which is nice cause your never doing the same thing day after day there are the odd days where we do the same but not usually the work environment is easy going very laid back mostly everyone that works there is there for one another always a good time while working which makes the day go by there are alot of different duties and job details for many different people and always a open door policy for training the company does work on a 7 on 7 off rotation there is always over time and with 7 days off gives lots of time to still have time with the family and have a GOOD! pay cheque ....should definitely apply you won't regret it 

Safety meetings in the mornings are important. It’s here that we find out the daily goals. Though lots look at my job as boaring. But with out persons doing my job do not see the great importance of how I watch out for everyone. I’m watching the crew,the general public, traffic both domestic, commercial, and those on foot or bikes. School zones, and busses, and hours of 
Operations are very important . Everything in my position needs to have there eyes and mind clear so we know first and most safety of all comes first.

Typical day is: not knowing what is happening" lead hand" will not tell us. Company don't like to have a woman to do a man's job, chances to show knowledge and experience are shot short, ideas are not excepted. Co-workers are like family :some are really good. Hardest part of the job is that we have rotations 12 hour for 7 days,7 off and 12 hours for 7 nights. After 60 hours on the job I am so tired that I am more prone to make mistakes. I look forward to work on the same jobs we prepared previous shifts and knowing what to do next without asking questions.

carmacks is a good place to work but has poor structure and very little leadership it seems like the more you do the worse you are treated. you cant be fired by a forman all you have to do is call the superintendent and you have your job back. if you try to show leadership and inishitive more is expected of you and if you refuse to keep pushing even though every one else slacks off you are looked down apon, good place to work other then that decent wage, you can keep in good shape. but make sure you get promises in writeing

Edmonton Henday Division use to be the best section of the Henday.. It has fallen off the map. It seems like there must have been a change in management or workers the past couple of years and now it is like nobody is held accountable or cares anymore. Work used to get done routinely, safely, and on time. Now if you just want a paycheque to show up and do nothing. If you care about your work and want to do an honest job its not the place. If you want to come in and take 2 hour coffees and have nobody say anything sign up. The culture is a general sense of nobody cares.

They don't give you raises when they say they will and if they do takes them 4 mouths to get there always scared off messing up as if you do you will not get a raise management is no good at there job just lies after lies with them. If you don't care about any of this then go with them. There pay is is no were it should be with the growing expenses you pay for your benefits and you loses 200 a mouth on that alone
