Carpenter Hospice

I wish I could have stayed working at Carpenter; I love the work and I love the clinical team. The other clinical staff were some of the most supportive nurses, PSWs and social workers  I have had the pleasure of working with in my career. Unfortunately, I burnt out due to lack of support from management. The chief executive at Carpenter has no background in health care (and no background in compassion, it seems). 
Carpenter Hospice is unbalanced in terms of the ratio to clinical staff versus managerial staff and it really makes no sense for a non-profit. When clinical staff are drowning, staying overtime and giving our hearts and souls to this job, management decides the solution is to hire more managers to analyze why clinical staff are leaving. 
It breaks my heart to leave this place as I love the work and I love the clinical staff and we do amazing things for the residents and families in our care, but the management truly makes this job too toxic to take, which is devastating. 
Avoid this place if you are a nurse, PSW, social worker or anyone who actually cares about people as the management will burn you out by asking you to justify why you need basic supplies to care for dying people, refuse to pay you overtime when you stay to cover a sick call, and bleed you of your compassion until you feel like you are just a shell of a nurse by acting as if you matter less than a piece of gum on their shoes. 

The Carpenter Hospice is a wonderful organization full of professional medical staff on the main floor.  I cannot say enough about the end of life care and compassion that each family receives when they find themselves travelling this road as a family member is treated in palliative care.  The staff is patient and kind.  Patient care is of the utmost importance and clearly the medical staff is a team that gets that.  

After experiencing the main floor vibe and sense of 'team' I was excited to see a job posting that came up.  I couldn't wait to be part of this wonderful environment where you are all working together to make such a difference.  

Once you descend into the office basement it is a totally different scenario.  I am a professional, organized, hard worker. I have never had issues on the job like I had here - needless to say I didn't stay long.

Every job is a learning lesson - this one I will never forget!

Perhaps things are different now ... be wary.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working beside the fantastic clinical team and the wonderful volunteers.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Working under and alongside the senior management team. I was employed as a "specialist" in my field, but reports and informed advice were often overruled by my unqualified opinion on building maintenance.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Within my role as Building Maintenance Specialist, I worked closely with the senior management team. This team I found to be extremely dishonest in how they present themselves and very tight-nit. There is open disregard for staff with diagnosed mental health conditions, something I experienced firsthand. This created a very toxic environment for me.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
My days consisted of fulfilling my responsibilities in building maintenance. I spent most of my time writing reports that would never be read.

Carpenter Hospice provides individuals who are dying, and their families, with high quality palliative care in a home-like setting.

Carpenter Hospice is a much needed service in the community and a wonderful organization to be part of.  The staff are committed to providing the best possible care and customer service possible to help alleviate some of the emotional and physical stress residents and their families are experiencing during this most difficult time. 

Although residents die daily at the Carpenter Hospice, it is not a sad place to work.  Our residents and families are grateful for having been able to spend quality time together.

It is a privilege to be part of such a wonderful organization.

Daily assistance with activities of daily living and personal care. Notified Registered Nurse of any changes in clients’ conditions. Offered companionship, to clients receiving palliative care.

I learned that the end of a person's journey is a celebration too. I enjoyed pallitive care at the Hospice and combined with Medication care at Sunrise.

Professional, supportive management.

Wonderful co-workers that worked together and supported each other withiut effort. We helped with laundry, meals, bathing.

The hardest part was every life lost was heart felt.

The most enjoyable part was playing a part in someones journey.

At the Hospice you provide care, all the type of care you can provide.
Emotional, Physical,  and,Spiritual. You help keep the residents comfortable by redepositing and providing personal care every 2-4 hours or as needed. The staff is warm and caring and provides emotional support not just to the residents but their family's as well. For me the hardest part of this job was walking with these lovely people to the end then see the pain of loss in the family. most cases its a bittersweet loss but none the less painful.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Wonderful clinical staff and amazing volunteers!

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Senior management are dismissive of issues pertaining to resident care. Director has no empathy for staff, volunteers or families of resident. Director has limited experience with palliative care, or how to treat her staff and volunteers.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
At the best of times heart warming and team building. Most times toxic and demoralizing.

Rewarding and pleasant place to work. Management had an overhaul and it went downhill from there. Lots of turnover. Values werent the same after that. More driven by money than by quality care. I dont think much has improved since I left. Otherwise I did enjoy working with the palliative population. This review requires way too much free type. Now I am typing to type. 

Great place to work, nursing staff work very well together but they are clicks. The volunteers are awesome such great people. Most management go above and beyond to help and make sure staff are ok. There is one manger that will go above and beyond to bully you if they don’t like you. Overall good place to work.  Not very many hours for new part time employees.

Poor work environment. Management disconnected from frontline staff. Staff did not mesh well together. Volunteers play a huge role in the running of the floor and care.  
Volunteers not treated well.  No existand performance appraisals. Poor adherence tohealthamd safety proocols.
