Cedars at Cobble Hill

In reviewing my experience at Cedars, I will share some noteworthy aspects that potential employees may want to take into account. While this list is not exhaustive, it sheds light on several key areas:

1. Compensation: when weighed against the sacrifices made, the compensation did not reflect the demands of the role. 

2. Workload: The staff often face excessive workloads, with clinicians managing large caseloads and support staff catering to a substantial client population. Unfortunately, these demands often surpass the capacity for proper accommodation. It feel it’s important to note that these issues are not the fault of the staff, regardless of any insinuations made by leadership.

3. Training: New staff members do not receive adequate training upon joining the Cedars team.

4. Organizational Focus: Cedars appears to prioritize financial considerations over a client or person-centered approach. This emphasis on the bottom line, in my view, impacted the quality of services provided.

5. Workplace Culture: A toxic workplace culture characterized by gossip, exclusion, gaslighting, manipulation, secrecy, and dishonesty has been ongoing.

6. Work-Life Balance: Achieving work-life balance at can be challenging, and management tends to attribute this struggle to poor time management, boundary-setting, and self-care on the part of employees.

7. Staff Retention: Cedars experiences a concerning level of staff turnover, which warrants reflection on the underlying reasons for this trend. 

8. Outdated Therapeutic Services: Several therapeutic services offered by Cedars may be outdated, requiring a reassessment to align with current best practices.

9. Working and Living Conditions: Staff members encounter subpar working conditions, such as shared offices and paper-thin walls that compromise confidentiality, ineffective technology, and inadequate working facilities. Similarly, clients experience poor living conditions, including issues like dirtiness, damaged facilities, inadequate bedding, and mold.

Things change quickly within this organization so I encourage anyone who moves forward to an interview to ask questions and go in-person to get a sense of how things have improved, or not, since the time of this writing (July 2023).

Worked at cedars for quite a while and it was great at the beginning and I love it  and such a fun job with even better coworkers until new management was brought into place and the whole thing just went downhill from there. Staff that had been there for years left and everyone seemed more unhappy as the time went on. I used to go to work looking forward to start my day and see everyone and by the end of my time there I would dread going to work, would get anxiety attacks and felt so overwhelmed. On a daily basis I only ever heard what I had done wrong and nothing positive or encouraging. Overall I don’t recommend working for this company because they all lie and act nice to your face but the second you turn your back they have something to say, toxic work environment and they have all their cliques and if you aren’t apart of it then you will have a very hard time working there.  You come in with such a positive spirit and they just drain the life out of you. The one good thing about it is getting to connect and bond with the patients and see them come back to life and fall in love with life again.

Cedars is a growing organization with a ton of potential moving forward- it is an organization that has demonstrated a commitment to change that has mobilized massive improvements since I started. The atmosphere is more professional and there is a felt sense of integrity that exists in staff at all levels of the organization. If you start somewhere in this organization and have a greater objective, show hard work and dedication, you will get exactly where you want to be. With a scholarship program and other benefits, they really want the staff to achieve their individual goals. I experience the leadership and supervisory crews to be highly collaborative and dedicated to both the staff and patients. This organization holds everyone to a high standard and does not accept complacency amongst staff - as patients, their families and referrals deserve us bringing our best selves to the work that we do I like working with an A-team. I would not hesitate to refer a close friend or family to Cedars, knowing the authentic and caring staff that would receive them with unconditional support and compassion.

Cedars strives to help people recover from their substance use issues, medically, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. As such, there can be many moving pieces and a diverse playbook of strategies. Working at Cedars is a rewarding and highly engaging way to spend my time. Each day, and sometimes hour can be a new adventure and a new task.

I have always felt cared for, and nurtured in my development here. I have been promoted multiple times over a short (2 year) span, being mentored each time through the increased responsibilities and workload. If you are willing to put in the work, pivot when necessary, and ask for help when needed, Cedars is an employer where you can advance and follow your passions, all while helping people.  

There is rarely a day, where I leave Cedars campus without knowing what I did was worthwhile, helpful, and appreciated.

Very high turn over with both counsellors and support staff, medical team, etc. Very cliquey, management says one thing then does something else behind your back. Not competetive wages. They give new staff better positions without posting internally, when you fit in with their clique. They tell you that you're family, but unfortunately it's a dysfunctional family. Not an ideal place to work, very frustrating and stressful. Towards the end I felt  unsupported and under appreciated.

For a place that promotes healthy living, learning and addiction treatment for those who struggle with addiction management is horrible..
Sometimes left on your own to figure things out, no help even though they say " just ask"they don't mean it.. It means we're waiting for you to screw up so we can fire you and hire someone more suitable for our taste.. Yeesh waste of time working here..  Anything learned here was accomplished alone.


My love for the clients was ALWAYS my main motivation. However, the clinical director continued to be harsh, talking about staff when they were not there to defend themselves and she had her favorites like a clique. not interested in the skills I possessed. Certainly not interested in seeing me grow as a counsellor. Showed no mercy post a return to work after a lengthy hospital stay.

I love my job at Cedars, the starting wage is low, however there's so much room for growth there. They work with their employees and help them reach their goals. My experience is if an employee does their job well, follows rules, communicates well, is honest, and has a positive attitude, they will succeed and grow quickly within the company.

Cedars is a great place to learn and grow and then move on as their management is lacking in quality leadership, more often than not are erratic and incongruent, saying one thing and doing another. I also found no mentoring, guidance offered, only control, power seeking and manipulation.

Watching patients transform from hopelessness to hopefulness and seeing the light back in their eyes is one of the most fulfilling experiences I have ever had in my life. It is truly a place that works miracles when patients get honest with themselves, are open to the process and have a willingness to change.
