Celtic Reforestation

As a foreman my day starts by driving my crew from camp to the worksite, a cut block. Once at the block I would hold a tailgate meeting to inform my crew of any Environmental and safety hazards on site and to talk about the specifications particular to the work site. From there I would direct individuals where to work and then deliver trees and monitor their work quality through the day. 

I learned how to safely operate a quad and back up a trailer.  My leadership skills improved over the years as I learned how not to take work things personally, which is the hardest part of this job. 

Tree planters definitely have a unique culture, this is probably the most enjoyable part of the job.


The management and organization of this company compared with others is uite good.

Why would you work in all the way up in Prince George, one of the least desirable places in BC and at a company that pays far less than the majority of companies around? With planting companies its easy to see if they are good based on how many vets they have, this company is mostly rookies which includes management. They promise lots of fire work but that is something they cannot actually promise, there are only so many spots and then there has to be fires to get the work of course. Do yourself a favor and find a company in Southern BC.

There website advertises "We have a reputation as a professional, extremely organized firm, with a very low turnover in both seasonal and permanent personnel. Many of our staff have been employed in the industry for more than 15 years, and most of our field crews are fully staffed with experienced workers." This is just false. Its mostly made of rookies and people with little experience. There are people with lots of experience there but frankly they seem to be plotting to leave or are burnouts. Place is definitely not professional or 'extremely organized' and prices are subpar, going back to my old company.

Celtic is a good way into the industry - there are plenty of things to complain about, granted, but tree planting is one of the crazier things you'll do in life and the experience just isn't quite as incredible without a touch of abject misery. There are better places to make money in the long run but the barrier to entry is low here, they'll train you and give you a taste of making big bucks if you've got the drive. Most cooks were great, most showers were hot, management mostly sensible. 

It has been a while since I worked for Celtic. I worked for them for six seasons, they always had lots of work and most contracts were fairly paid or better. I only worked for one other company which was fairly large this one was more consistent and organized. Even back then people would say that other companies paid more but before you go there ask the other company how many working days in a season. This this aspect is very important when you need money for school etc

Very dishonest management. Incentivized vets with a $1000 bonus, did not receive. Cut as many corners as possible. forged safety documents. hire young people who do not understand labour laws.  Turnover rate is insane. Would rather put young adults at risk over paying for proper safety measures. Genuinely terrible place to work and I used to really love it before I realized how two faced this company is. 

Good company to start at as a rookie, but honestly definitely not somewhere to stay.You can make a lot more at other companies in better working conditions and better management. A lot of the management seemed very green and it is largely due to the turn over rate. Try a small company of you are looking for a better option is my advice. Watch out for summer plant!

Upper management is out of tune with the current work landscape - people do not accept as much free labour and cut corners on safety now that tree planting is not as lucrative. There is a lot of "why do the kids not work as hard as they used to" kind of thought when the real answer is that the wages have not kept up to cost of living. Look elsewhere, which is sad to say because there are a lot of good people in the company.

A tree planting company with disinterested management, and the usual amount of veteran planter elitism. Some great crew bosses, and some great vets. It's telling that the only vets in the company have only ever planted for Celtic however. I wouldn't say planting with them is a bad experience, just not the most exciting one. Probably a good rookie company, but not much else. 

good place to start out in the industry but do not stay long, there is much better companies that pay more and treat you better. If you are looking to start planting, its a good place to start but thats it. Do not trust management.
