Pros:

Cons:
Truly, I don't have any thing bad to say about Champion. However, it is guaranteed that you will never say I'm bored with in a few weeks of hiring, because more than a job, working at Champion feels like you are taking an advanced training in your area of expertise. So much learning and growth opportunities, which I have never seen in other organizations. If you are ready for next learning curve in your career, Champion Petfoods is the perfect fit.

This is certainly the worst company I have ever had the "pleasure" working for.

In the last 2 years (since the new facility has been open) they lost so many staff. Dedicated, hard working people that have been there for 10+ have up and left because of how much of a train wreck this company has become. They lost a whole HR team in less than 6 months. At the rate that people are leaving, should alone steer you away from applying to Champion. 

There's no repercussions for anyone's actions. Health and safety is the least important thing in the company. Instead of working together, all departments worry about only themselves. If your not at "yes man" type personality, you'll definitely be worrying if you have a job tomorrow or not (zero job security, easily replaced). If you don't work for production or QA, they could care less about you and how you get your work done. They give you titles such as "Leader" to pay you the least they can for your position (even with post secondary education). Upper management is a nightmare to deal with. I could go on and on for hours about why Champion Pet Foods is the worst company to work for.

The only thing they do to show you that they care is a paid lunch at the end of the month....thanks.

If you want peace of mind, good mental health, job security and a feeling of belonging to a team, then please save yourself the time and don't apply to Champion. You deserve better.

They were a good company for awhile until it got very corporate opening up the new plant. They played musical chairs with their HR staff until they found HR employees who are more soulless and less caring.  They want subordinate employees who just want to aimlessly work. Be expected to work lots of over time. Lots of 6 day work weeks. You either work really early days or late shifts. Your personal life will be non existent They implement every overtime day on short notice as mandatory and frown upon if you already have plans in your personal life. The supervisor team is a little toxic. The management team really isn’t any better. Be expected to be talked down to often, usually with sarcasm. They prefer employees from the Philippines. If you’re not part of that crowd it’s easy to feel excluded as they speak their preferred language most of the time and form clicks. It’s easy to get burned out at this job.

They do pay well and it’s a generous fixed rate. So it doesn’t matter if you’ve worked their 10 years you are still making the same as the new kid who got hired. Bonuses and such are nice. Monthly lunches are ok too. Free bag of dog food a month.



Although this is a local company with a great product, and what would initially seem to be a great opportunity, Champion is not a professionally-managed company.
There are 2 camps within leadership, both try to avoid each other and duplicate work, create confusion amongst employees and create boundaries between people they should be leading cohesively.
I encountered a "my way or the highway" style of leadership.
There was also a very obvious and inappropriate personal relationship taking place between two of the leaders, and favouritism ran rampant. 
I was hopeful as a Director of HR was hired while I was there, but she was later fired - although the initiatives she was implementing were great.
One great thing about Champion was the other employees. There is a really great group of people who work there and who stick around because they believe in the product. 
Personally, I couldn't take the abuse.

I was hired as a Customer Care Rep which sounds like a relatively easy position; however, I had three interviews - one phone call screening, one in person with two interviewers, and one with the current customer care team. Team fit is extremely important. Day to day, we are expected to handle your typical customer care duties such as answering phones and replying to emails. We are also expected to complete assigned projects and work collaboratively with other areas of the company. You are expected to do many projects that are well beyond the scope of your average customer care position, which can be seen as a chance to expand your knowledge or be extremely stressful. We always seem to be working towards a quickly approaching deadline. Everyone in the corporate office is friendly and easy going. The best days are when the dogs are in the office!

Management were completely disorganized and very paranoid, 3 departments and not one communicating with the other, Constantly playing the "BLAME GAME"

NO training on how the process of the manufacturing of the product

All P.L.C. systems could only be accessed by outside contractors

Most operators were Polynesian decent (not problem with that ) but they could not speak ENGLISH and had very little training on the machines they were operating .The operators were very pleasant and tried to help as much as they could. but the language barrier and the fact that they didn't know the machines made it extremely hard to trouble shoot any problem that arose.....

These concerns are not just mine....They have gone trough more than 19 maintenance personnel in less than 2 years

I would never work for them again

Company is a champion when it comes to pet food, but exact opposite when it comes to their employees, especially the ones in production.  Employees are not valued and are not given any sense of security.  Management cannot be trusted.  There is always mandatory OT and poor work-life balance.  The benefits are not great and communication to the front line is poor.  Champion used to be a great company that followed it's core values, but due to old school leadership methods, the company is in trouble.  Lots of employees, including me, are looking to leave because of this. 

Champion Petfoods is not what is used to be.  The father and son who used to run this Company would be shocked on how hard working employees are treated.  A couple of years ago the Executive Managers are now all from the USA.  They are more concentrated in the USA, Asia, Europe extra market and don’t care about Canada.  The Management team do not know how to Manage, they don’t care about the worker bees of this company.  All they care is themselves. There is no room for advancement in this company.  Very clicks atmosphere.  No job security expecially if you get to 10 years

Currently there are managers for every activity in the plant and each runs in their own fashion. A handful of high school graduates with bare knowledge of food industry are running the plant and each of them have their own interest to establish in the plant. Favouritism takes priority for everything than team approach. These managers have never seen a food plant in their life, but try to copy and implement industry standards by reading the websites and failed in their attempts. There are great employees in the plant unfortunately they are under divide & rule method.

Corporate & operations are very different worlds at this company. Corporate Champion likes to talk culture & puts on a good show to make themselves seem like a high end managed company. Once you step foot into operations though, expect nose to the ground grind behaviors. All the good leadership were paid out and exited years ago. Those that remain have no formal experience or business being in people leadership roles. 

Executive leadership is out of touch. They've Americanized and are no longer connected with what made the business popular in the first place. They're all too busy playing the waiting game for their next career jump.
