I delivered papers for them for about a month back at the beginning of the year, they were very vague about pay and under table “contract” work about it. I never received a pay stub just e transfers and sketchy envelopes full of money. I went from delivering to a manageable 13 apartment buildings (3 lobby drops, 10 each with about 10 floors on average) to abruptly being bumped to 23 (10 added to the route that weren’t lobby drops) for basically no more pay than before. I was actually payed by paper and when it came time to calculate it out it wasn’t even 9$ an hour. That on top of gas and wear and tear for 60km a night at 2 am with the papers being dropped at random times in the morning out front of a random shop all sketchy like. I would not recommend it to anyone. I also had an emergency one night where I couldn’t work, like literally could not possible work and they flipped at me and made me jump through hoops to bring the keys when I needed to be dealing with the emergency not chasing them all around Halifax. And then when I quit they threatened not to pay me my last pay.

A typical day working for the Chronicle Herald is being out on the roads six nights a week for 4 to 5 hours .Couriers are for the most part on their own unless there is an issue which is resolved by a district manager.My disfavors would be that should I be sick or want a vacation there is not a replacement available , it is entirely up to the courier to find someone. Being out all night in every kind of weather can be challenging also.When i recieve a little note from a customer thanking me for getting their paper to them even in nasty weather I know I am appreciated and thats rewarding.

Here's the total scoop delivering Chronicle Herald. Pay is piece work, 0.19 cents per paper delivered. You do not get paid extra for all store drops, hotels, motels, schools etc. The pay they give you for fuel just covers the cost as long as your running a 4 cylinder. If you miss a paper your automatically docked $2 per miss. Roughly takes 3-4 hrs depending your route. Management is poor at best. Nickel & done company. Always fighting to get your money if there are complaints.. All in all its a fun job but you'll be lucky to make minimum wage. Only great part of this position is Christmas time when you get tips, other than that if you figure out all your expenses, fuel bill of $600 a month, wear and tear, in the end you'll be loosing money.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Long shifts because I don't like short shift. Jogging is my forte and my weakness is 2 shifts on the same day, I always get used to it.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Arguing because I got trouble before and always wanted to stay loyal to my booth

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Newspapers. I am so lucky to work so saltwire. I always thought it's a more then a 5 company newspaper company. I loved being in the news business without the live electric media such as tv.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Mondays and Tuesdays. It should be Wednesdays but I'm off on most Wednesdays.

A typical day working there involved getting up at 2am in the morning and picking up papers at a specific location and deliver more then 250 newspapers to more then 250 customers by a deadline

I learned that getting up at such early times for work is trying on a person to have a regular daily routine

The hardest part of this job was getting up at 2am and still trying to go about the day normally

Worst company to work for in Halifax. The only loyalty they have is to... well no one. They do fire all their long term employees, or look for ways to get rid of them and then give them a package. No paid lunch breaks, horribly management, no direction. If you work there, e prepared to not move up the ranks. 

One star for job security/advacement is even too much.

This was a great job, but had it's costs with car repairs. The management and people were fun and great to work with and the customers were helpful. It will give you a stable, reliable pay and will give you great driving skills in inclement weather.

well they are trying to get rid of there long time employees because they make to much so they use there legal charms, hand them a package and send them on there way. they let me go without just cause so they had to give me unemployment.

If you like driving and at night then this is a good job to have. Area manager and regional manager were awesome to work for. Didn't like to deliver the Vanguard's as they added too much bulk to the route but it was manageable 

At one point a family company, the former publisher was a true gentleman, and, an honour to work with.
