The job was exciting, it's like slowly dying on the inside.   Pay is fantastic, the benefits are fantastic, they even pay for part of schooling 50-100%.  If only if management invested in the employees(time and energy).   The city needs to mandatory train its staff/people(both employees and supervisors) in the basics of customer service and reinforcing the mission statement and purpose of why we are are here.  There is the basic training that is provided on a monthly basis( this is to reduce the risk of an employee getting injured - a vailed attempt to reduce liability, this does not mean anyone cares about you though). The only time you will find out the mission statement is during a performance appraisal,  and this will be rushed through in order to rubber-stamp the performance appraisal.  The supervisor will go through goals that you want to accomplish -  no worries- this won't be looked again in till the following year.  The performance appraisal a missed opportunity to connect with the employee and find out what the employees need to be the best that they can be.  I really think it could be a great place to work,   but there would have to be a top-down overhaul in the culture of the workplace.   They are constantly threatening with contracting out, but if you improve the working conditions there would be much greater cost savings because people would want to work harder, feel secure with there jobs and want to do a good job because this is a career and not just a job.  Management is constantly worried about liability,  this hand-ties the employees' ability to do a better job.  One last thing it does help if you are good friends with people that can get you hired or help you move up into management.  Management respects loyalty and complete regard for the hierarchy of the system above education and experience or qualifications to that matter.    Keep that in mind and you should move up fairly quickly

Worked on a two year student contract for the Environmental Services Department; where my job duties included maintenance of the property, operation of the public dump, setting up barricades for various public events throughout the city, accident clean ups, and various other responsibilities.

I worked 10 hour days, 7 days straight, and would take 4 days off (continental type shift), I really enjoyed interacting with the public on daily basis and being trusted enough to move freely throughout the city in company vehicles, knowing that I was available for assignments with just a radio call.

Throughout my time, I earned the respect of various other departments, and was asked by name for special projects; I still have a great relationship with everyone at my old department and wouldn't think twice if offered a full-time position to work for the Corporation of the City of Windsor, it was probably one of the best working experiences that I have had in very long time.

The Employment & Social Services department is ruled by cisgender heterosexual men. Despite social services being a field of helping vulnerable individuals, the department doesn’t value a social work education and operates with a business mindset. There’s no “social services” …it’s all about statistics. 

Opportunities to move up within the Corporation are minimal unless you’re chosen to be “groomed” - yes, that’s the wording they use. Favouritism runs rampant and there’s no morale left. 

Management likes to talk about life stabilization for clients but working from a business lens, they lack the knowledge and understanding of how mental health struggles, substance use and other struggles individual’s face impact their ability to secure employment.

Hard work isn’t appreciated or valued. The ones who move up are ones who barely do their job. The pay hasn’t improved with inflation and you do not work 40 hours/week so the pay really isn’t all that great or competitive. 

Employed at my local government for 12 years and I have yet to become accustomed to the slower pace. So much red tape to wade through, unlike the quick paced, multi-tasking of the private sector I'm accustomed to. However, the staff are very pleasant and I've been very fortunate to have management that is understanding and compassionate.

I love the diversity of the staff. People from all walks of life and different cultures. Interaction with them can be difficult at times due to differences in culture, but it is also a learning experience in which you learn, understand and embrace those differences.

As newer technology is brought forward, it's important to look for ways to be more proficient, to complete a process while reducing waste while maintaining legislated deadlines.

I’ve worked here for over 10 years and sadly, the environment has been falling apart. Lots of favoritism. Management is unprofessional and has become a “boys club.”  Lack understanding and education of vulnerable populations struggling with mental health and addictions. The pension use to be good but with all the cuts and changes it’s not competitive for younger generations as it no longer provides benefits post retirement. The wage hasn’t increased in years despite inflation so it’s also not competitive with other employers. The morale barely exists and trainers consist of people who haven’t done the job in years. No diversity in management 

Last summer I was employed with the city of Windsor under the student lottery program. My time here was temporary because I had signed a contract with a termination date prior to beginning my time there. I worked under the environmental and public works division. A typical day would consist of assisting customers with proper instructions on how to safely dump their garbage. Other tasks would consist of getting assigned "calls". A call would be assigned when we were assigned a pickup truck and we would be given a call, which could be a road clean up to collecting the city's barriers in the city trucks. Every day was a different task. Working with the city I gained better customer service skills, as a majority of this job was assisting locals, residing in Windsor.

-Show up at work, begin a never-ending list of vacant lots that we had to maintain. Once 8 hours pass you can now go home.
- I learned how to work with my hands, i really learned how to navigate through Windsor and different street names and areas. I also learned how to prepare for work by getting enough rest the night before.
- Management had our backs as long as we did our work and they were very defending of our reputations.
- Co-workers and i didn't have many problems, i tend to stay out of people's issues and bring humour to the table.
- The hardest part of the job was waking up every morning and biking to work.
- The most enjoyable part was the fact that we were trusted and no one would nag about things we already knew.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The workplace culture. People are friendly and social and theres always something going on somewhere in the building to make it more enjoyable to be at work all day. I enjoyed my time there. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Trying to land a full time position in my field. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Casual yet professional. Fun and friendly managers with lots of ideas for building and maintaining morale in the workplace. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I greeted visitors and ran reports, filed paperwork and did mail runs. It was pretty much the same everyday.

Helped me to be more confident. Gave me good leadership skills. 
I loved being around kids! That was the best part of the job. The people I worked with were awesome. It also payed extremely well.
 The heat was probably the worst part of the job. It was constantly boiling and extremely humid, especially at the top of the slides. The air is hard to breathe, especially when you're working a long shift. We were also only given 2 days off in the summer, which was very inconvenient for my family (who likes to travel during that time). It was the reason I ended up leaving.

Some people don’t realize how good they have it and are miserable workers but they have those at everyjob! as long as you do your job and pick up extras while your new, you will be fine. I really appreciate the benefit packages and pension plan they have in place. I was hired as part-time, but I am able to work over 40 hours a week if I pick up! its a very rewarding and reliable job, as a psw i can tell you this is the best staffed nursing home, fair pay, full of supplies, activities and accommodations for the residents so they get adequate care.
