I work full time on site and a typical day would be busy reviewing and processing shop drawings, IFC drawings and submit necessary RFI's to the consultant's due to conflict in construction documents and actual site condition. Clarified information must be shared to the different trades ASAP for proper execution of work related to the change, thus minimizing delay & to not affect the budget.Constantly reviewing construction documents like the specifications and IFC's helped me properly monitor the progress of the project and if the work sequence and materials used are compliant to the spec's.  Working with professional management team & the trades aiming on timely project delivery, unequalled quality workmanship as common goal is always a challenge. Delay to me is the hardest part of the job. The true reward is when the project is completed on time and on budget and by physically seeing the actual building grow from foundation until completed, when the design was justified, turned over and occupied.

Your direct supervisor will be someone who is 3 to 4 levels above the you which means they have no idea who you are or what you're doing. Performance is only reviewed yearly and they never have constructive feedback. There's no clear milestones or learning trajectory. You will be birdogged. It's a complete nanny state. If someone can't get ahold of you they will not speak to your immediate team but will report it to the VP, even if you had cleared the time with your team. No yearly raises, they are based on company profits which are lacking due to poor management. Company stocks took a dive every year; don't participate in shares unless you like losing money. If you make complaints about not being supported or not having clear direction in your career they will give you stupid monkey work to demotivate you into compliance. Leaving was the best thing that I ever did there.

This firm’s reputation and leadership were second to none for decades, but unfortunately those times are behind them. With a leadership more focused on their aesthetic and egoS vs. the wellness of their employees and the quality of their work, it is no surprise that their business is waffling. If it weren’t for Turner, their majority shareholder, Clark’s days would have ended by now.  In spite of Turner’s financial support  and general oversight of all business operations, Clark has become a toxic workplace with inept, rich kids and narcissistic, power hungry bullies pretending filling the roles of VP. There is some light at the end of this warning, soon, the few solid, honest, and skilled workers that are still suffering through the day to day at Clark will be available for other firms...as the future of Clark is bleak.

I worked for a short time with Clark Builders as I was on my way to a full time job with Fluor Energy.  In this short time I could see that there was a great improvement among all the workers and different trades to work safely together in such a small congested area with avoiding conflict among any one.  It was great to see a safety culture progression working towards success.

Clark seems to be more or less a second family away from home. They're very good at hiring personable people. Like any job, you'll get your occasional bad apple, but overall, one of the best work environments I've been in. Wages were much to be desired, but if you're a qualified trade, they're not terrible. You'll find a LOT of people here that've been working for Clark for years and years.

-A generally even distribution of labour

Cons-
-Very little overtime
-Wages could be higher
-Might be a lot of moving around before you find a 'forever home' (work lasting 1yr+)


Good place to work with money and hours though the cons are heavy. The politics within the company are horrible, they are racist, sexist and anything and everything in between. The foremans act like children and throw tempers as if their in grade school. The older employees are not willing to teach the apprentices and will go out of their way to make you look bad to save their jobs. They will hide safety issues that OHS should be looking into, things that would get the company In HUGE trouble. Don't work here unless your good at politics and are good at covering up safety mistakes.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Some support staff were exceptional. They would deliver real feedback. got back to you with any questions in a reasonable amount of time, a great support.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management hated  subcontractors and hourly workers that came from residential and would set up multiple roadblocks to ensure failure. If hourly workers did not want to work management would allow them to do the bare minimum of what they wanted to do.

Working at Clark Builders located in saskatoon was one of the most stress, anxiety, and panic inducing jobs i have ever experienced in my time in construction. The utter laziness of the upper management is an absolute joke. They take advantage of peoples skills and abilities without proper compensation for those skills and abilities. The planning for work being conducted could be easily done, but they make it as difficult as can be for a simple task. I would not reccomend working for this company to anyone that respects themselves as a carpenter. 

The once great general contractor Clark Builders has gone down hill ever since Turner Construction took ownership. The general feeling in the field is that they are moving towards a management company and don’t want any field staff. Field wages are well below industry competitors and field moral is at an all time low. They will dangle the carrot in front of you and make you think you have a bright future with promises of advancement and then tell you to be patient. I would not recommend working here until they reevaluate their identity and start caring about their field staff. 

Lots of room to move up within the company. If you don't mind wearing kneepads. The office staff parades around like a bunch of peacocks in brand new red surveyor vests and bright white shiny new rock climbing helmets complete with chinstrap, (that everyone has to wear), while the real workers (Frontier) carry the place on their backs literally. Seriously the culture at Clark has gotten so bad that the only way to fix it would be to lose everybody and start over. You could try it for a while but best to move on. Unless, you know, kneepads.
