Co op Placement

I did a four-week placement where every week I was in a different area of the lab. My first week, I was in the histology department where I learnt how to receive tissue samples and label proper cassettes for the pathologist assistant. Also, I was trained how to re-stock the tissue processor with proper re-agents. My seconded week I worked in receiving where I received all kinds of specimens such as blood, urine, and stool. Once, received I would deliver to the proper department. My third week I worked in phlebotomy both in-patient and out-patient, where I greeted patients, asked for consent to take their blood and followed proper order of draw. My fourth and final week i was in microbiology, where I received urine and stool, I then set up the proper plates, streaked the plates, and put them in the incubator.

From my work experience I developed the confidence to work with people and communicate with patients over the phone. After, doing this task many times I started improving my communication skills. I developed a lot of skills in technology because, most of my tasks were done on computer. I got more comfortable with the printer’s functions (scanning/ faxing) and I was able to do specific tasks alone without the help of a staff member to guide me through. Also, I developed a lot of group work skills. At our clinic we had 6 staff members and 3 co-op students. Doing group work was really challenging but, I learned how to adjust with situations, cooperate with everyone's idea and also sacrifice any ideas in order to avoid conflicts.

The day usually entailed of having many patients coming in and out of the clinic. Lots of paperwork was always being done, filed and put away; as well as handling incoming phone calls from patients who want to book an appointment and other pharmacies/clinics. The clinic is always working at a fast-paced environment, so multitasking is always needed to be done. The hardest part would be handling difficult patients but it always comes with the job.

Really friendly staff that were very kind and understanding. Helped me out whenever they could. I was really comfortable working there, almost felt like a small family. The work itself was simple enough to do. No isolation; one broad workspace where everybody could coordinate as a team.

About a typical day at work every day is typical as long as you are learning or teaching. I learned many things from my workplace and curious to learn more knowledge is everywhere. About the management, I like it very much there is no such difference as a boss or employer everyone is equally treated.

A typical day at my co-op placement was doing ordering stock, in the back and sometimes displaying products. During my experience at my placement, I learned how 2 deal with customer queries and complaints. The hardest part of the job was being new and not knowing what to exactly do when being assigned a task.

I learned a lot on my last co-op program. Interacting with professional in the health industry help me improving my languages skills. Besides it was a good place to learn time managing  and organizational skills.

When i was doing my co op placement i enjoy the work. I got to be around children all day and help kids with special needs. It felt rewarding. Although it was a very slow environment and very repetitive. It was hard to enjoy my time when I felt bored.

This was not a paid job. I learned how to work with children. The management was alright and workplace culture was fun learning with the kids.I had a great time working closely with the teachers and staff to insure I had a full experience of this kind of job and work.

Loved working at Acupuncture Works. The people and clients are so nice and always ready to tell you an amazing story or teach you something new. Its an awesome work environment and i loved every minuet or working there.
