Coastal Outdoors

A typical day for me is very hectic.  I am new at my current job but it has been a challenge that I have enjoyed.  I worked payroll for 16 years and this is quite a change for me.  I have worked extremely hard this past five months and have learned many new and different things.  I get along with all my co-workers as well as the manager and I have a good relationship with the other employees in the other two locations and my immediate supervisor is in one of those locations.  The hardest part of the job was trying to juggle so many different aspects of the job but with hard work and determination I am feeling much more comfortable in completing all the tasks that are expected from me every day.  The most enjoyable part of the job is realizing how much I have learned and continue to learn every day.  It is a great feeling when you see how much you can accomplish when you work hard and are very determined to succeed.

I worked at coastal for almost a year. 
I am a mature employee with lots of experience and have never seen a company run like this one. Zero training, zero support, very disorganized onboarding. For a company that’s been around as long as this one it should have clear policies and procedures. 
Also, employee engagement, loyalty and satisfaction was the lowest I’d seen anywhere. 
It was a good interim job for me but not somewhere I wanted to stay long-term. 

From day one I was micromanaged and then blamed when things didn't get better. Don't bother working there unless you think you can fix 30 years worth of issues in 6 months (6 months will be your grace period before they fire you without cause).

The store is under new managment until recently, and although the pay is decent, if I could give 0 Stars for Job Culture and Security, I would.
The overall atmosphere of this small, hunting/fishing retail store is nothing less than misogynistic, mind numbing, and if one could put my overall experience into three words, it would be “Old Boys Club”

The time I spent working at Coastal Outdoors' Mount Pearl location was a horrible experience!!! The operations manager there made working there impossible. Staff at all three locations have zero respect for her due to the way she treats staff. She's an absolutely horrible person to work under. She routinely gives contradicting Direction and then blames you for not getting it right I highly recommend staying as far away as possible from Coastal Outdoors

Disaster sums it up, worst place I've ever worked. No structure, communication or support for managers in stores. No training and the expectations are out of reach, upper management and the owner want results but they can't explain exactly what they want expect you to figure things out in your own. Highly recommend staying where you are if you have a decent role now and any self respect as this place Is a career killer.

This employer is forced to overpay for certain positions because of their toxic work environment. Management churn is a big problem but is only a reaction to poor ownership. There is no training, support or open communication. Managers are hired as punching bags. Managers are not given support from the owner or from junior managers. As a result, turnover is high and staff are not engaged. Good luck to you if you choose Coastal Outdoors.

If they allowed their own sales employees to be responsible for their own sales, returns and price adjustments the managers would be out of a job and the customer service would improve dramatically. You will never be promoted or have any future advancement as those positions go to family and relatives of the upper management and owners regardless of maturity, experience or qualifications.

If you are foolish enough to accept a job here, keep in mind that you must be family or a good friend of the owner or management if you want to have a successful career. The company wants to get better, but does not want to change to do so. High turnover on staff, including management, should be enough indication of the mess that is Coastal Outdoors.
