Your days will be consisting of counting people's recycling, tidying up, and putting full bags of product in their proper places. Good math skills are very recommended for success, though if your math skills aren't up to snuff it's not the end of the world. Expect to deal with the homeless at least 4 or 5 times a day.

The management definitely understands that this isn't the most glamorous (or even all that fun) job and tries to make it as tolerable as possible. Good benefits, bbqs, tips, and being as accommodating as possible for time off. 

Your coworkers are gonna be very jokey, sometimes quite... not PC jokes are said so if you aren't okay with that, this place might not be the best place for you. Just understand that your coworkers want to go home as much as you do... so don't make the place a more difficult workplace than it already is.

The hardest part about working this job is definitely the customers. Most of them are very thankful for what you do, or at least polite and friendly enough. The bad ones however are seeming to try and just be a jerk for the sake of being a jerk. Those people will ruin your day. The homeless customers are also quite a doozy... mainly from having to mother them to make sure that they take their garbage with them, take their shopping cart, making sure they don't hog the bathroom, and checking to see if they're not too drunk to be in the depot.

While the hardest part about this job is the customers, the best part is also the customers. People will tell you how much they appreciate what you do almost daily. Gifts are more common than you think, and they'll occasionally stand up for you if another customer is giving you a hard time.

After working for the company for over 5 years, I have to say how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to start my working life off at Columbia Bottle Enterprises. It is a great place to begin working with competitive wages and benefits, set hours, never working nights. Through the 5 years I progressively managed to receive through CBD my forklift licence, occupational first aid certification, hazardous materials training, lock-down procedure training, shipping/receiving training, cash experience, customer service experience, and eventually key-holder and management opportunities/experience. It is a hard job with some very hectic days and can be quite demanding at times, but if you put your work in it is well worth it and advancement opportunities are available if you show interest. This job has taught me a lot about work life and people in general and the lessons have helped me in every job since. Again, very grateful for the experiences and opportunities management provided as well as the memories with coworkers.

This job has taught me a lot about how much emphasis BC puts on the environment, ensuring that all recyclables Encorp (Pacific) receives are recycled in BC and Canada. As a person that cares about the environment that is something I value.
I have lost weight and gained muscle from the active environment, keeping busy with customers as well as inventory management and cleaning duties. I have also developed strong mental math skills as pausing to use a calculator interrupts workflow.
Management of this location is good and does their best to maintain a positive and committed atmosphere, celebrating staff birthdays and hosting staff BBQs and Pizza lunches. As well as being open to input from all staff members. 
The hardest part of the job is customers and the odd employee that does not understand what respect and responsibility mean. The customers are usually well behaved and friendly otherwise since they know that we are the ones giving them the money and not vice versa.

If you are good at customer service, but want a job where the customers aren't allowed to walk all over you this is the place to be. Because we give money back instead of taking it most of our customers are respectful and friendly. We also work in teams so it is very rare that you need to deal with any really tough customers by yourself. It is a physical job that keeps you moving and strong. And although identifying the different bottles takes time to learn there is time and support to learn everything you need to know, along with opportunities to learn more.  There is a nice sense of humor and comraderie here that is reinforced by hard work and determination. For those wanting to work and learn and help keep resources out of the landfill this is an excellent job.

I enjoyed my work very much is was fast pace and my work was very physical. I enjoyed my one on one with my customers. I still miss my customers that i had made friends with. That was the hardest part about leaving my job, the friends that i made. Management was easy to get along with and always open to ideas to bennifit the company and make it a safe wotk place. Pretty much all parts of my job was hard but i enjoyed my tasks at hand always trying to improve myself or do my job faster, I enjoyed a busy day as my day would go faster. I also worked overtime when requied.

the job is dirty but very easy and repetitive, every day is essentially the same proccess and you will be doing the same things which require very little brain power. Its family operated and the sons of the owner operate the locations, however you can expect slightly odd behavior from them as they were born into the business (Indoctrinated) , its basically all they know. If you can handle opening bags of old beer and milk, if you dont mind doing the same things every day then its a good job, easy easy money. Just dont do anything to hurt the boss mans feelings.

Management is very hands-off.  Issues with facilities are slow to be resolved. The frustration of working with the bureaucratic nightmare Encorp (which collects all deposit items EXCEPT beer cans -- why, I don't know) will become part of your daily routine, so don't expect inventory to be logical, consistent or predictable.

That said, there is no micro-managing. They are generally accommodating with schedule changes (except when they are understaffed and desperate -- that was when I first got hired.) Management team at St Paul is very easy to work with. Benefits for part-time workers is nice.

Not the best job you'll ever have, and not the worst either.

Columbia Bottle Depot works really hard to offer a great working environment.  By default, having a career in a bottle depot isn't always the easiest, but having great coworkers, supportive management, and good company health benefits definitely overcomes any negatives!  

My favorite part of my day is passing out treats to staff and monthly birthdays (cakes, pies, cookies, or ice cream cake, anyone?!).

It really does feel good to work for an environmentally friendly company who is worried about the future and looking to improve it.

This job can be a lot of fun and the people are amazing, but it is not a place for those who want an easy job. There is a lot of lifting and always something to do, but after the first couple weeks it is an easy adjustment. We see the best and the worst in people, but the best far more often. Management is hands-on and fair, and employees feel heard when presenting ideas or concerns. Staff are always welcoming of new hires and happy to lend a hand. It can be busy at times, especially in summer, but the time flies by before you can notice it. Overall one of the best places I’ve had to work.

The experience I have had working at Columbia bottle depot have been nothing but positive & educational. The management is very understanding and the work is routine. The staff members are friendly and the supervisors responsive to questions and concerns. If you are passionate about recycling, enjoy working somewhere with competitive wages & strive in a fast paced environment, this job would be a perfect fit!
