The support worker position is less about helping struggling individuals as it is a janitorial position. There is an expectation from management to be servile: do as you are told and do not complain. While their PR advertises the importance of humanizing and dignifying their homeless clients, it is at the expense of the employees, who are denigrated, exploited, and subject to the vitriol of management. It is especially disparaging to your morale when being  told by a supervisor with no real qualifications other than being related to a high-level coordinator.  The emphasis for the company is not to provide honest altruism for clients and employees. Rather, the company cares about securing grants from BC Housing and Vancouver Coastal Care, as every client is a dollar figure. There are clients who require specialized care in a better setting, as the company does not have the proper resources to facilitate care. This dilemma falls on the staff, while upper management counts the dollars from BC Housing. Ultimately, I do not blame management, for they are fickle and intentionally malicious. What I have a difficult time comprehending is the value of the HR department, as they lack the responsibility to stop the problematic trend of nepotism and inept supervisors. 

This organisation is quickly fitting the mould of other non profits in vancouver. They are more focused on expansion then providing quality care or support to those less fortunate.

Staff turnover is incredibly high with 3 HR managers passing through in a little over 18 Months. Support staff is similar with huge turnover leaving unskilled and unexperienced staff to handle chaotic situations this work brings.

Unfortunately this organisation doesn't have the skills or leadership to focus on helping people. Instead it will expand and take on new projects identifying this as success. Sadly this is not a success. I hope for the safety of the frontline works as they will receive little support in the form of training from management.

There is a real issue with the oversight of this organisation, BC housing nor the board seem to interject even when issues arise, there has been deaths sadly that could be prevented in future with honest reviews and changes in practice. CBG would first have to acknowledge they made mistakes which will not happen with current leadership. Maybe this is because CBG is still not as terrible as some of it competitors (not that such a word should be used in non profits or in social services designed to help people) . Sadly nothing will change with organisations like this as they cannot see there blind spots or at least fail to acknowledge them. 

Working with a stigmatized population has been an eye-opening experience. I’ve had the privilege to connect with people from all walks of life while supporting their residential needs. While this work can be challenging,  it’s can also be rewarding. 
However, it’s challenging to work in an environment where staff don’t feel supported by management. Many buildings are severely understaffed, especially on weekends. Often, only two support workers are assigned to care for 30–60 residents, while also being expected to clean heavily cluttered rooms, sweep and mop 4–6 floors (even when elevators aren’t working), distribute medications, and respond to crises.
Management also  shows a lack of trust by monitoring staff closely through security cameras to make sure they are doing work. 

From my experience, many of my colleagues feel unhappy, overworked, and burned out due to the lack of support. I believe having at least three staff on duty each day would significantly improve workload and employee well being.

Working at Community Builders Group has been a meaningful and eye-opening experience. A typical day involves supporting individuals with complex needs, collaborating with a dedicated team, and engaging in community-based initiatives. The work can be demanding but also incredibly rewarding.

I’ve learned a great deal about trauma-informed care, mental health, and housing systems, and have grown in my ability to problem-solve in real time. There are opportunities to make a real difference, and the impact you have on clients’ lives is often immediate and tangible.

Management teams are sometimes supportive, though responses to staff feedback can be slow at times. The workplace culture is inclusive and values-driven, with a strong sense of camaraderie among front-line staff. However, high workloads and emotional stress can sometimes lead to burnout, so more wellness support would be a welcome improvement.

Overall, if you're passionate about community work and looking to grow professionally in a supportive environment, Community Builders Group is a great place to start.

Working on the frontline at Community Builders Group has been both rewarding and challenging. The role offers a deep sense of purpose—you're directly supporting individuals in need, and the impact of your work is often visible and appreciated by residents.
That said, the job can be emotionally and physically demanding, and at times, support from upper management doesn’t fully match the realities frontline workers face. Communication between departments can be inconsistent, and there are times when decisions are made without sufficient input from the staff who are most affected.
There are some great colleagues here, and when teamwork is strong, it really helps. Training is provided, but ongoing support could be improved, especially for handling crisis situations or navigating complex client needs.
If you’re passionate about community support and can manage high-pressure environments, this job can be fulfilling—but it’s important to go in with realistic expectations about the demands and structure of the work.

In emergency cases/overdoses you can bet you have to do everything alone because your co worker would have zero clue on what to do! 
The management doesn’t take you serious. They have no respect for clients or staff. I’ve seen staff yelling & swearing at clients,  Ive seen staff physically push clients! 

Its a very uncomfortable environment to work in! 
The pay is not enough! 
If you bring up any concerns to management they dont do anything about it! 
Matter of fact, when abuse was reported from staff abusing a client. There were no consequences for that staff and they continued to let them work. The staff was verbally & physically abusive. Zero knowledge about poverty, mental health & addictions etc! 
One of the coordinators would leave, 1-2 hours early almost daily without management being aware. Only on-site staff knew and supported in doing so just so they can get to their 2nd job! That means 2 hours of free pay & not attending fully to their duties! 

Duties not told during the interview and listed on the position : *Janitorial:Changing garbage that tenants usually to dispose neddles,glass or heavy and poky things, *Acting as security which is not safe as not enough training is provided like non violent crisis intervention disengagement skills , asking people that come into the building for ID, and to leave after corfew/not allowing access to the building(which most of times they are heavily intoxicated, and may act aggressively Can be quite unsafe (working with low barrier/mental health and addictions population) usually one staff on shift Short staffed while working in the shelter 

THEY HAVE ZERO BULLYING POLICIES! if you complain about that they will only cut your hours.

Also they promise employees full time , providin no contract an once hitting the six months mark they put the staff to casual.

Favoritism, low pay, head management having a lifestyle of luxury when not being an non profit

at the end of the day these unprofessional and immature/ power tripping individuals get off on reviews like this so if your interested in a extremely poorly managed atmosphere full of narrow minded thinking and inexperienced bosses come on down the carnival starts after the first week (depends on when you start ) but the main attraction is the fact of how sad their care for you really is they'll professionally love you ( saying a good job but always expecting better when they cant even do it properly by themselves) and then when you get sick of "coach you" they send you home as if your a child and the only experience they have is being a mom so yea if you want to hate your life come on down and work with their shelters the co workers are wonderful but the management is disgustingly unprofessional 

This organization has the lowest pay rate on the union scale. The upper management need some refreshing on their pr skills. And the morals and values of the company aren't reflected by their actions.  Vulnerable people sustaining more trauma because of decisions made by uppermanagememt being greedy. Doing the right thing is frowned upon if it doesn't fit the plan. And workers are subject to favoritism and nepotism. Nit to mention the unsafe working procedures,  lack of proper debriefing following violent incidents and the coordinators are over worked with little support unless your one of the favourites. High turn over possibly due  to untrained workers. And the tough clients. No in-house programs leave the clients feeling trapped and unsupported. "Transitional housing " with no case plans whatsoever. Budgets being manipulated .... shady shady shady.
