The Graduate and Professional Skills Program offers more than 220 free workshops and events every semester for Concordia graduate students. I am one of the three full-time staff members. Other 16 graduate students work part time (10 hours/week) doing different jobs.

My position combines outreach and administrative tasks. 

Outreach: 

- I am responsible for developing the 2014-2015 Outreach Strategic Plan, which includes a detailed schedule (by week) of the themes and activities that will be promoted, as well as the media platforms that will be used and the person responsible for the task. It also includes the development of a new social media strategy to increase followers and audience engagement, as well as the creation of a new graphic concept for our promotion materials.

- I am also building the Outreach Handbook, a how-to manual aimed to standardize processes and facilitate the learning process for new staff or team members involved in the promotion of the program.

- I also coordinate the Ambassadors Program. This involves analyzing our databases to invite potential volunteers, organize and lead information and training sessions, assign tasks, monitor performance and provide feedback. Sixteen graduate students signed in as volunteers for the 2014 fall semester.

- Finally, I also work as a graphic designer. I use Photoshop to create web banners and visually attractive images, and Publisher to create handouts, posters and other printed materials. I also create the QR codes that are added to any printed material.

Administrative tasks:
- Follow up with workshop leaders and other partners to gather information necessary to promote workshops or events, process any technical requirements, and write thank you letters after the event.
- Keep student attendance records up-to-date.
- Incorporate feedback and attendance data into future plans.
- Participate in the hiring process of new team members. 


  Overall, this is a great job. I have developed an excellent relation with the Program Director, my supervisor, my colleagues and all team members. However, I don't have a contract, and now that the program is transitioning from a pilot project to a permanent program  it is unclear how the changes that this transition implies will impact me. That is why I am exploring other options.

I was a Lecturer for a second course in Calculus taught from 8:45-10:00 am.  

My responsibilities included relating my knowledge of the subject to my students in a way understandable at their level, making sure to get their feedback and adapt my examples to suit them, strengthening their week-points in the material.  

Afterwards I would have office hours, wherein I would address the individual needs and questions of each student attending.  I always encourage attending these as it is the perfect haven for the more timid students to seek out help, which would be frightened to do so in-front of their peers.  

The hardest part of my job was to ensure that every single one of my students understood the material to the best of their abilities.  I achieved this as best I could by always listening to their feedback, providing extra unpaid office hours and addressing their concerns via email correspondences.  

This then lead into the easiest and most rewarding part of my job, which was seeing their success upon the hard work on both our parts at the end of the semester.  

Throughout this entire process I learnt that impeccable time management, keen communications skills and autonomy were crucial in being able to successfully manage 80 students, without each of these I could not have achieved in them the results I was wanted, which was their success.  

Also, it was very pleasant to worked individually on my section yet to be part of a group of five professors and lecturers who worked together as a team to optimize our teaching plans and strategies.

A typical day at work involves having students drop  by the office to ask for directions to an office or how/ where they can find help to a particular problem they have. There were some that called and others sent emails. This meant answering enquiries over the phone and responding to emails. There is also office work to do sometimes. At the beginning of every semester, we do orientation sessions for new students and conduct campus tours. 
I have learnt that every body has something good in them that can benefit the community. I have also learnt that team work is the best in terms of being able to achieve good results on time. I had great co-workers. We were all students and we had a very friendly and nice work environment. The hardest part of the job was coming out of myself to present those student seminars. Sometimes I have a hard time addressing an audience. Now my confidence level has grown and I can handle any challenge anytime. The most enjoyable part of the job was being able to give back to the community. Being able to help someone left me feeling fulfilled and accomplished. I had a great supervisor who was very empathetic. She helped me a lot to do my work well. She never gave ambiguous instructions. She was very clear on what she expected and she was always on hand to give us the necessary help I needed to get the job done properly.

Working in Payroll was quite a challenge as we were always juggling many problems via e-mail, phone or in person.  The nature of Payroll
is that any calls you receive are regarding problems so I was always putting out fires.  Very little down time, extremely busy department as Concordia University has enlarged tremendously in the time I worked there but the Payroll staff did not so there was always overtime to catch up on what you couldn't complete during the work day.  Many calls from Service Canada verifying information that was on employee's Record of Employment that we provided.
I got along very well with my co-workers and still have contact with most.
Hardest part of the job was never being able to completely finish a job as there were many interruptions.
Most enjoyable part was being able to solve employee's question/problems.
Having worked at such a high pressured job for 36 years I am now looking for part time work that will challenge and teach me new things.

Was able to contribute to the success of the University's book store operations. Employees are professional and very knowledgeable in their areas of responsibilities. In the time I worked there, my team and I executed major renovations which brought the stores into the modern age by offering a shopping environment that meets world class standards. 
New technology was introduce and services such as click&collect offered new opportunities for the students to make their purchases without having to wait in long line-ups. 
The fashion was separated from the educational goods and a boutique across from the bookstore was created offering a unique shopping experience for the students. Overall, I am glad to have been part of this incredible journey. I was able to bring the best of my abilities to this amazing project

It was a bright Monday morning that promises to be sunny. I arrived at the work place around 8:00 am though work begins at 9:00 am. With the usual nervousness of a first time employee, I greeted the security and introduced myself, who showed me to a waiting area for my boss to arrive.
I started work at exactly 9:00 am when my boss arrived. She took me through a few computerized applications that were used in the department. I was also introduced to co-workers from other departments during lunch break.
The hardest part was when we had to prepare and send quarterly reports to directors. We work long hours during these periods. Sometimes I had to take some of my work home and work during weekends in order to catch up with the timeline. 
The end of year treat for all employees is one of the memorable part of the job.

I learned through this job to be able to work with other people and be able to coop with them, I had to manage and be creative to find a solution to anything wrong that pops up immediately.
You learn to be organized, social, creative, giving, tolerant and give your best at all times.
My co-workers became my friends after like 2 weeks of working which made the working environment more peaceful and better since I was able to get the help needed whenever wanted.
The hardest part of the job, was to be aware so that nothing wrong might go, and to look into details so that everything will end up perfectly.
The most enjoyable part of the job was the experience that I gained, the communication skills that I enhanced and the different people that I met.

Post University is not a great place to work. It is fun and innovated place. The proposed research was suitably tailored according to Dr Fu’s research background related to modelling and control of complex systems and his experiences in learning control. A multi-disciplinary supervision team together with renowned international collaborators consisting of experienced academic staff  and industrial partners with solid research backgrounds in control, modelling and design, as well as strengths in applications of  vehicles, energy storage management, power electronics can guarantee Dr Fu to broaden his research horizon and improve his overall research competencies significantly. Dr Fu has been working and collaborating with groups in China and Canada.

Managing different kind of projects in different construction status  at the same time was interesting and helped me to improve my management skills. The interaction with people at all level to coordinate projects improved my communication skills. 
With experience in a corporate culture, it was a bit difficult to adapt to the lack of clear standards, processes and procedures.
Unfortunately, I was located in a different floor than the rest of my co-workers what didn't help in my integration with the Facilities Management team.
Even if it was a management position, I was able to balance my personal life as a single mother of 3.

Being a research assistant has many benefits for the field of study that I wish to pursue, namely psychology. It required meticulous and tedious work, characteristics of a job that I enjoy and am good at. A typical day at work required autonomous decision making about the research being conducted, and asking for feedback from co-workers. This position has taught me to pay close attention to detail, to work on projects for extended periods of time,  and to develop my public relation skills with various groups of individuals. The most challenging part of the job was the recruitment process of the study. The most enjoyable part of the job was the interaction with the recruits'.
