My belief is that one’s innate talents and fit with an organization matter more than one’s personal skill set when it comes to one’s happiness and ability to be effective at one’s job.

We are workers, parents, spouses, friends, caregivers of difficult behaviours and volunteers. It’s not easy to achieve balance among all these competing priorities.

Self-awareness is essential for the workplace because every person has a different work style. If you want to maximize your happiness, productivity and fulfillment in the workplace it is important to identify and understand your work style.

You work in a place where your boss is your friend – that’s pretty amazing! Remember that, when you feel like complaining about work to your boss or when your friendship seems complicated and frustrating. Being friends with your boss can certainly add challenges to the everyday workplace experience. 

I previously worked in an unhealthy organization and found that regardless of the task I was doing, it was miserable being there.  Happiness at work is not as much about the work as it is about being respected by your co-workers and supervisors. Working in a healthy organization makes me actually want to come to work.  I am happy to pick up extra tasks or work a little longer because I like what I do and whom I’m working with.

This is not your typical review. I have not come here to lay blame, point fingers or be disrespectful. 

I always have and still do enjoy my time at Connor Homes and I accredit that to my own ability to make my job enjoyable.

This is the most mismanaged company I have EVER worked for. First of all, all of the management treats their workers  poorly. There has never been ONE nice manager that I've interacted with. Management will also gossip about workers to other workers, and simultaneously punish employees for gossiping. This one area supervisor LOVED placing employees on leave for the stupidest reasons - and acted like we should be grateful that they did it. The micromanagement is unreal, mgmt requires so much paperwork for time off or shift changes, but doesn't have to fill it out with the reason if denied (and there's never a reason, they just like power tripping). Due to ineffective mgmt, no one knows what they're doing, one employee received one directive, another employee a different contradictive one, and the clients suffer for it, which makes things harder for everyone. 

It COULD be a great job, but it's not because mgmgt can't or won't actually put in the effort to invest in and support their employees. So, if you're just getting your foot in the door and can deal with the most toxic environment? Go for it. If not, steer clear. 

I am extremely disappointed with my experience at Connor Homes Group Home. The management treats the staff poorly, creating a toxic work environment that is not conducive to teamwork. It's disheartening to see that labor laws are not followed, around shift coverage and time off request.  which raises serious concerns about the welfare of both the staff and the residents.

Additionally, Connor Homes is known to be the lowest paid group home in Ontario, which is unacceptable considering the level of dedication and hard work that staff put in every day. Instead of fostering a supportive atmosphere, management seems to engage in backstabbing and undermining their employees, making it difficult to work together effectively.

I would strongly advise anyone considering employment here to think twice. The lack of respect and fair treatment for staff is alarming and needs to be addressed. 


I did not have a great experience working here. They let the kids dictate who works and who doesn’t and let them have the run of the house. We weren’t allowed to give any type of punishment to certain kids in fear of setting them off again. The management system is weak, and there is a lack of management all together. A lot of drama was occurring between staff as well due to the lack of management being involved. They don’t like to give time off but are more than happy to cut hours whenever it is convenient for them and with very little warning or no warning. Sometimes it could be rewarding working with them but those opportunities came few and far between. No hope for advancement or increase in wages as there is no opportunity to improve here.

I had the opportunity to work in three different types of programs: group, staff model and foster care.

The supervisors were somewhat flexible with my availability, and always ensured I was comfortable with my scheduling. We received monthly schedules and were able to put in our monthly requests the month prior. 

I did find it difficult to manage at the beginning as you are paid once a month, yet this does occur at other organizations.

Some days were challenging, as some youth had extensive behaviors, as other days were difficult to complain as you were fishing or going to the movies with youth. The kids were always involved with recreational activities which was nice to keep busy throughout your shift.

Wages were a bit low- but I did receive a raise throughout my year I was there

There were occasionally some good times with the kids, typical day was trying to deal with multiple kids with multiple issues and trying to get them to behave together and not having any other staff to help. No support, only belittling, I learned that this place has a horrible reputation and I feel sorry for the kids as they're not getting the treatment they need and deserve and are supposed to be getting. Constant lack of staff meaning having to work 60+ hour weeks, I once worked a month with only 3 days off

I absolutely love my job with Connor Homes. 
The programs are built and tailored to the client and thier needs. The programs provide structure and consistency throughout the homes while maintaining the individualized aspects specifically for that client. It’s quite fascinating, and seeing the progress the clients make is rewarding. 
As for the work environment, it’s my second family. I couldn’t ask for a better crew! 
Our area supervisor is dependable, open minded, flexible and supportive. Provides endless amounts of support when needed throughout every program. 
The team environment is pretty great as well. Co workers are open minded, dependable and personable. 


Connor Hones has been working to change the Provices perspective on how CCWs and foster parents are treated and paid, while doing what's best for kids. For an agency that gets very little from the government, that do great things. Those that have been disgruntled, should have stepped up and worked through the issues and mad things better for kids!

Worked there over 2 years with nothing to show for it. Houses are disgusting, nothing has been updated to them and they are run-down. Management is awful. She doesn't care about anything or anyone expect herself. 99% of staff quit because of her, yet she doesn't take ownership in the fact that she's the problem. Head managmanet isn't even in the picture. You're extremely underpaid. No raises, no benefits. Never praised or thanked for the work you do. Always expected to go above and beyond for nothing in return.

I am always learning and growing every day with Connor Homes. I chose this career to try to be a good role model for children and youth that have had a rough start. Every goal we reach is good for my soul.
