I am a Stores Attendant at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital and Misericordia Community Hospital. My acting Supervisor uses me as his casual in between the Grey Nuns and the MIS; because I know every job in between. I was trained in shipping and receiving, the driver position, which is also the delivery person within the hospital, this person delivers items that the couriers deliver to the hospital, and also the Stores position of course. I have been a casual with Covenant Health since Dec. of 2015. Recently a position became available within our department because an employee accepted another position at the MIS. This person has only been in the position for a couple of months or less than. So the job was not re posted and awarded to another casual within our department. This casual has not even been in our department for a couple of months and it was awarded to her. My supervisor did not even let me know that she was awarded the position. I had to find out from my fellow employees that this person was awarded the position. I am not only upset by this, but also offended. My supervisor has always told me to keep trying and that I would get the position next time. He's always said "next time" which has given me false hope. He knows that I want a full time position and that has always been my goal. My other employees are also upset that I did not get this position as well. I believe that this is a personal attack against me as my supervisor and I have had an argument several times about how he runs our department, how he treats others, and his professionalism.

The number one thing that seems to happen around our department is the lack of relief. There has been countless amounts of times where I will show up to work and full time staff have called in sick or they are on vacation and there is no relief for them. This is from the experience of years that I have worked here that this has happened. He will push all of the work onto us or he will have no relief at all which makes work very very difficult. I have seen where we will have no delivery person for 3 days on the shipping and receiving dock. Sometimes for the two receivers that we have there will be only one covering without any coverage for the other person for days. Yet I am looking for shifts. It is the same for the Stores positions. He will pull an employee from the Villa that already is working his .775 from his shift and bring him over to cover others work without paying him the over time that is required. I have worked three positions in one day and I can't even count on my fingers how many times this has happened. He won't deal with simple problems that we have as staff. He puts it to the side like our opinions do not matter at all. I have put forth to him many problems that are simple that need to be solved. But they never end up dealt with. For example I asked for a new hole punch for paper and he forbids to get a new one. He fixes it but the next day it breaks. A lot of us have trouble asking for simple supplies.

This winter I would always run to the delivery truck to start it in the -30 weather. I would then run quickly back to the automatic doors to get back inside. The automatic doors ended up not working and only slightly opening which caused me to run full tilt with my face into the doors. I filed an incident report because I was really concussed. I am a runner and run all winter outside in the snow for exercise so I have no problem with ice and running on snow. Besides I have been doing this all winter and this was the first time I have had an accident with the doors. Anyways he approached me about it and didn't even ask if I was okay. He had asked why I was running and not to run again. Which then got me past my boiling point and I went off on him about everything I am telling you now.

Ever since this has happened I have gotten minimal shifts which I usual get almost full time hours. The shifts have gone down to almost one a week. Which is not enough for someone to pay bills or live off of. I am having trouble surviving. I believe this is a matter of now what seems favoritism in the work place. The others feel this way as well but are afraid to bring it forward. I know another female co-worker who feels this way as well. She is not retired and is a casual but gets minimal shifts like I now do. I now feel as if this has come to a critical point to where it should be escalated to HR.

Good thing I found a full time job elsewhere in less than a week!

Working in a hospital environment can be dark in itself but while I was there was social atmosphere was toxic. 
Mandatory overtime, short staffed all the time and a fear culture pressured new casual employees into taking bad shifts for a hope at getting fulltime. As far as Peace Officer positions go its one of the lowest paying in the province. 
Some of the Officers were great people, who loyally dedicated themselves to an organisation that didn't seem to appreciate it. 
When I asked for new uniforms, I was given shirts with rips in them and old pants. Most of the equipment on the duty belts are self bought as supplies for new officers were limited. Office furniture was held together with ductape. 
 
Stat pay was alright and there was flexibility to take breaks and snack when you were able. Its also a great opportunity for young people looking to enter the industry to gain your status. There are not many training opportunities, but you'll get the hands on work experience that will lead you to other future opportunities. Its also a great place for casual part time work. If your an experienced officer/sheriff looking to pick up some hours throughout the month to fund a vacation or pay bills its great and generally low commitment. 

Again, considering it is a hospital, if blood, urine or death makes you queezy you probably should consider another organisation.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management does not seems to be consistent throughout the building/company. Some managers choose to ignore overall covenant policy and make their own rules to suit them. You dont always know what the expectation is making it hard to do a good job.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Overall, I would say this is poor. Office and management staff would (and does rate this high) but the lower you go on the chain the more contrasting the responses get. Not all staff report to the site administrator making it difficult to ensure a good working environment throughout the whole building. Everyone likes the mission statement and outlined values of the company but does not feel like they are followed in practice.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day in my role is quite predictable and I appreciate that. I place my supply orders and book resident transportation to appointments. Follow up on external referrals and ensure any patient movement is followed up on. There is usually something that happens daily that negativly impact my coworkers and disrupts the flow of things on the unit. Morale is low and also impacts the day.

The work is rewarding. At St. Michael's there is little support and no onboarding process. The process is very much, "hit the ground running." Units have poor communication and disjointed collaboration and management lacks leadership skills so the problems generally snowball. The departments are consistently understaffed and staff burn out. Ive seen bullying and abuse. Reporting through proper processes did not help and management is protective of their culture. Hiring practices are shady and they always hire internal, at times they dont even interview externally and already know who will fill the pisted position. The disorganization here places staff, patients and residents at risk. It's embarassingly clear to outside professionals and famlies who visit this facility that there are deep system issues, and poor communication between professionals. It is difficult to do your job well, you are not offered support from workplace bullying. It is hard to take pride in the work being done.  There is no room for growth within this agency unless you live in a bigger city. 
At the end of the day the patients and residents were the most meaningful part of this position.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Certain coworkers. I find night shift has more staff that will help each other

Lack of communication about nearly everything. Not having help with several heavy patients 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It really depends on who you are working with. Many people of the same culture speak in their own language on the floor. Most of the time a person has no idea what they are talking about.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Stressful, lack of assistance. Upper management will let you drown in work and not even try to assist. Too many educators that won’t “educate” when a person needs some help. One will tell you to go look it up when all a person wants is some support

Your experience working in healthcare will vary significantly depending on your area and your colleagues. In labour and delivery at the Grey Nuns it is an amazing team. The work environment in fast-paced and unpredictable and often can be stressful. The team there is generally super collaborative and supportive though. Because of how busy it is and the diversity of patients, it is a steep learning curve when first starting. Current staff can be reserved at times when evaluating your knowledge and willingness to learn. As with any area of healthcare, there can be red tape and bureaucracy stuff. Overall the work is extremely rewarding and the team is like no other. This is one of the best places I have ever worked. 

I received 2 days of “training” for a very demanding office job with a very demanding boss. Training involved preparing for 3 imminent events/meetings. No training for all the corporate demands. My boss expected me to overcompensate for her lack of communication. Only co-worker only cared about making herself look good to higher ups and sat on her a** when it came to shared duties.  A “trainer” was brought in at the final hour just before completing probation - apparently actually there to assess what I didn’t yet know. Prior to leaving employment, the atmosphere in the office was so tense from boss I experienced severe anxiety and went on stress leave. I had no intention of returning to that unhealthy environment and did not.

been with the company since 2009-2010 every year it gets worse no vacations approved always short staffed old broken equipment management only cares about themselves work load is not attainable violent patients demanding families harassing staff poorly trained staff hiring practices are a joke they always complain there is no money in the budget yet the managers and office staff always have assistants they dont support front line workers food quality is a joke they always cheap out on med supplies and get poor quality or run out of stock all the time 
its an unsafe work environment in many ways the pay is ok and decent benefits and managers loose your documents never around will not answer calls or emails

The peace officer department has the worst environment ever 

I have never seen a place where everyone is so  eager to throw each other under the bus and the management loves it with no professional standards unit all  discipline is done by HR who has no experience with use of force or enforcement of any type 

I have seen a review by another person that worked in this department and they mentioned the schedule and no vacation we have also recently released a  expectation for casual employees to make them self available as much as possible or they will be dismissed 
Union is of course quite about this the shifts are 12 hours long with weird start times so good luck working it into your schedule

If it weren’t for my amazing colleagues and direct supervisor I’d have left much sooner. Overall, executive leadership is keen on playing political chess and overlooking the values and goal of providing compassionate care to all. Executive leadership seems to be selected based on favouritism from CEO and not talent or merit. Prepare to engage a sickening number of people on projects so that nothing actually ever moves forward. Oh and the best part? No raises unless you move roles, so prepare to make less every year due to inflation. Pros - people make it a great environment, Vacation time is great, defined pension plan,  and flexible spending account.
