Pros
-there’s a certain level of freedom at deco. You're not micro managed. Well kind of but you’re by yourself, so.  
Cons
-If you’re in Ontario you’ll barely be making any money at all. It’s there first year in Ontario, deco isn’t reputable to us yet nor is the service needed like it is in Calgary. They don’t use salt to kill ice in the winter, they use gravel and small rocks so everyone has chips and cracks over there. 
 It’s so slow most days you feel like you’re just volunteering your time as a human poster. 
 
 -They wont compensate you for anything. Even things they say they will like gas, or drinks at a company event. They get you to drive all over the place as well, that’s the job. (minimum of 40-50 minutes on the highway everyday adds up) Not to mention you have to volunteer YOUR time and gas to pick up and drop off the equipment at there facility in Toronto only when it’s convenient for THEM. 
 
 -All of us in a certain territory we’re not properly trained by the manager that was suppose to be training us and we didn’t know till more then half the season was over. All of us had to drive out to this hotel (some traveled over an hour) to get treated like we knew absolutely nothing. 
 
 -Count your hours that’s all I’ll say. I have worked 6-7 days a week, 8 hours a day for over 3 weeks and never saw a paycheck worth more then 73 hours. 
 
 -Real unorganized operation. In the sense that when you order new supplies, you have to order them 3-4 weeks in advance. Personally speaking they’ve missed my order a couple times. Leaving me without the proper amount of supplies the majority of the season due to the fact that nobody knew where my orders were going. When I did finally receive my order, it was delivered to another employees house. You’re also told to “problem solve” and expected to ghetto-rig contraptions when your tent brakes on you. 
 
 -you’re working outside, best case scenario is you’ll get sun burnt and dehydrated. You’re in charge of packing everything up quickly if there’s torrential down pour or extreme heavy winds. Which can make things pretty stressful if you’re trying to reclaim all of your flying belongings. 
 
 -the deco equipment takes over your entire vehicle. The amount of stuff you have to carry around is ridiculous. I have a 5 seater sedan, deco turned that into a 1 seater with no trunk space all summer long. My car was filthy and stunk.
 
 -you’re just completely taken advantage of.
 
 -All of this and you’re literally making around minimum wage. Some days it’s worse then minimum wage. Save your time and find an actual job.
Advice to Management
-Compensate your staff, stop expecting them to bend backwards for you. 
 
 -Ontario needs a new batch of managers to begin with, the Ontario operation was disastrous on all aspects. They promised they’d take us out bowling, paint-balling, weekly dinners and whatnot to compensate for all our (site operators)  continuous hard work. The only “friendly gesture” that was provided by Deco was one Sunday evening we got about an hour and a half in some ghetto bowling alley in Hamilton. (Drinks not included) They couldn’t even train us properly I don’t know what else to say. This place is a mess.

Deco is a high paying summer job, but not high enough to keep many students for numerous summers.

The people you work with are often fantastic, and there is a competitive work environment with fun benefits for those who succeed. That being said, the job at Deco is rough on your vehicle and exhausting. Hauling >100 lbs of equipment in and out of a vehicle daily is a lot of work, and set up and take down time are not paid. You are expected to start your shift after your site is set up, and end before it is taken down, which equates to about 30 minutes of unpaid time. There is also a mandatory in-class training event which runs about 8 hours and is also entirely unpaid.

It is a company expectation that you work at least 6 days per week at 8 hours per scheduled shift with no overtime pay, and no stat holiday pay (i.e. no time and a half for either). They expect that you're up and walking around for your entire shift (not completely unrealistic) and do not encourage taking lunch breaks. It is in fact expected that you remain at your tent if you do take a lunch break as it is paid, and therefore you must be able to still serve a customer should one approach. 

At the beginning of the summer, they take a very fair $200 deposit for the equipment you will use for the job. That being said, you are forced to sign a contract stating that should anything happen to the equipment you're using (Dremel, iPad, etc) you are responsible for the cost of replacing it. This also applies to cash. If your cash from the day's sales is stolen (even if of no fault of your own) you must replace it in full out of your own pocket. There were also times were payroll was not correct and amounts had to be added on to other cheques, or cheques were being mailed/collected in person at the office instead of through direct deposit with little to no notice. 

Finally, management is indecisive and intimidating. One week you are told you're no longer allowed to give out discounts and the next you're being told to do "anything to make the sale". Management also uses scare tactics to get employee's sales percentages up. One such example is my territory was told a story of someone in another territory in Calgary who was fired because they couldn't get repair plan sales >65%. The expectation of that sales target was highly unrealistic given the company average was sitting around the 45% mark.

Overall I enjoyed my coworkers and the team building events we got to do together, but I would never return for a second summer. My understanding is that most of my coworkers also did not plan on it either given their experience at the management level.

I had some good and bad days here. The pay is minimum wage + commission. The good thing is that the company is well known in Alberta so customer flow is good depending on what site you're located at. You have potential to make very good money with the right site and right sales pitch. This is a customer service job so you should know what you're getting yourself into regarding how to deal with people. One of the toughest issues was dealing with the city managers. They do not log your time off requests and constantly double book sites especially if you're new. It's almost as if they don't take your time off requests seriously because in their minds this is a "seasonal job". No matter what they ask regarding which area of the city you want to work, they will put you wherever and find every excuse to keep you there if you're doing a good job. (Ex. Living West of Edmonton and being forced to work in Fort Saskatchewan weekly). Disorganization was a huge issue working in the Edmonton area whether it was getting supplies or getting your location switched as you're driving to work. We were told to call them anytime if we had a problem only to get more unsure answers which would sometimes lead to the customer getting more angry on-site. The company has potential to do big things however with the incompetent managers running the show outside the corporate office, this company will not go very far. Talking to majority of the customers, they're only here because "there is no other place that offers this right now". 

A day consists of you getting to site, setting up the tent and repairing windshields, followed by taking your tent down at the end. You handle every single part of the job yourself on site which is nice so you aren't reliant on anyone. 
The only hard parts about the job would be when the weather became difficult or when you got swamped with customers, but that's a positive thing in the long run for money's sake. 
This job does a great job of teaching it's workers how to do customer service, building confidence with strangers in the process, as well as social and technical problem solving skills both with customers handling issues as well as handling potential hiccups in the repair.
The culture is good, everyone is kind and upbeat with one another and encourages and spurs each other on to do a good job and to work hard.
In general I have no complaints about the job besides when the weather was sucky, but that's uncontrollable. Plus, if it's so rainy, you get a free day off which is nice sometimes!
Overall it's a fantastic job for college students and young people looking for summer work and pays great if you work for it as you're paid both an hourly wage and a commission. Oh and you get a sweet T-shirt tan, and who doesn't want one of those!

I worked for DECO for two years in various cities, and I find this to be a great employer for students, as they rated high in that respect - they offer plenty of hours, ability to work outdoors all the time, great sales incentives, and you could easily pay off your tuition over the summer. You also get to work independently, but also apart of a team. You’re also given all the tools and training needed for the position, but sometimes not enough. 

But saying all the good things, there are negative aspects of working for DECO, so to each their own when deciding to work for them. The biggest issue is having to use your own vehicle - even though you’re using your vehicle to carry around their tent and the supplies, they don’t compensate for your mileage. Another big problem is weather calls - it could be hailing, raining, snowing, or whatever else, and it takes forever before management will FINALLY call the day. 

Some other issues include supervisors who ego-trip and speak down to you, not open to suggestions or feedback of their own. You’re also required to work almost all long weekends and don’t like to honour days off requests, not matter how far in advance you’ve requested them.

I started working at Deco (Hamilton/Burlington) in August 2022-July 23 here are some things I learned 

-2 Days of training is insufficient and 1 day was completely wasted because there weren't any customer cars to train on how to properly repair a chips or cracks. They will throw a script at you and that's all the sales training you get the rest you have to figure out yourself. 
-Hauling equipment is very inconvenient turned my car into a 1 seater every time I had to drive someone or even do groceries I had to leave everything at home. So unless you have something bigger than a minivan don't work for this company it will ruin and stink up the interior of your car.
-Pay is not as advertised they say you can make as much as 24/hour the most I made averaged out to 22$/hour for 1 day out of 4 months working there. 
-Management is not your friend 
- Weather-dependent/Unpredictable workload you could be on site for 3 days and have no one show up then have 4 cars show up within an hour and repairs can take more than the 15 minutes they say it takes.
-As a seasonal job it's fine for college students on summer break but you can't make a career of this job. Believe me.  This job is a waste of your time if you have other job opportunities available to you take them. you will regret working here. 


The overall experience was extremely disappointing due to poor organization, lack of clear communication, and constant uncertainty. Expectations were often unclear, making it difficult to understand priorities and complete tasks efficiently. Frequent last-minute changes created unnecessary stress and disrupted productivity. There was little consistency in processes, resulting in confusion and repeated mistakes that could have been avoided with better planning. Resources and support were often inadequate, making routine responsibilities more challenging than necessary. The environment felt unprofessional at times, with issues remaining unresolved for long periods. Efforts and achievements were rarely acknowledged, which reduced motivation and job satisfaction. Opportunities for learning, growth, and development were limited, making it difficult to progress or build new skills. In addition, unrealistic demands and tight deadlines created ongoing pressure and negatively affected overall morale. The experience was frustrating and discouraging, as there was a lack of structure, direction, and appreciation. Overall, it was not a positive environment and did not meet reasonable expectations.


I wouldn't recommend anyone work for this company, It is extremely predatory. Management rarely cares to try and help with anything, including workplace injuries, where I was told to try to work anyways. Management blatantly ignores its employees unless beneficial to them. Weather calls affect your ability to work, but aren't accurate. I've worked in thunderstorms and pouring rain because of a poor weather call. Whether or not its for the best you are on your own after you finish training. It becomes your duty to set up on time at the right location, but that wasn't always easy because for the longest time they wouldn't send out the schedule until the last minute. You do have the opportunity to make extra money with commissions, and they advertise that on their job listing, but it is really dependent on the site they give you. The equipment we're given breaks very easily if the managers insist you work in windy weather. When the tent breaks you have to repair it with parts from other broken tents to get back to work asap. Personally I think if a company dodges the wsib it's scummy.

They are a great place to work for, and I would recommend to everybody. The manager I have is great with giving me my time off requests ASAP, and is very flexible in scheduling. If you can’t work a full day or you don’t want to, most sites and managers will give you the opportunity to work a half day if that works better for you. Commission is a wonderful added bonus, and there are some really great incentives to be the top sales person. There are literally only two things that aren’t a glowing positive, both of which are small things, and not something that can be controlled. If you have a slow day sometimes there isn’t much to do so that could be a little boring sometimes, but if you are a student it works out great because it gives you more time to do schoolwork while waiting for customers. The only other thing is that we’re weather dependent, but that also means in the summer you get to hang out in the awesome weather under the shade. Overall genuinely a great place to work with really no downsides! It’s the only place I’ve actually been excited to go to work for. 

Typical summer job, work from 10:30 am to 6:30 pm, and 10 am to 6 pm on weekends. Get a nice tan working outside, a lot of customer service or talking to people. Get to do repairs outside. Be prepared to fight the elements. Your biggest enemy is the wind, make sure you won't get blown away. Be sure to keep ALL of your inventory checked and NOT STOLEN because the company will not reimburse your stuff, in fact they will charge you for getting their stuff robbed. You are accountable to it all. There are mandatory tuesday morning meetings, with the same old thing: don't do repairs with the windshield facing the sun as it will crack, and always upsell upsell upsell on glass treatments (full service package). Managers are nice, well the ones I've worked with. Just don't be lazy. You're working by yourself literally every day. If you wanna make it big, then sell on those glass treatments, but again with all aspects of sales, if you are willing to give up your morals/business ethics, you can be a great salesperson by setting those things aside and just do you.
