I worked there last summer and it was okay. The pay was decent but the work and hours were grueling. There's no recognition and my health benefits never kicked in (the office was never willing to help). My pay was often wrong due to the app they use to track hours and fighting to get my hours fixed often took weeks. There was little to no opportunity to move up or learn new things when I was there. You aren't allowed time off and the crews are chronically understaffed (they consciously choose not to hire more people even when we were asking for help). Upper management was a joke, there was no communication between the superintend, foreman, and crew. It's not a bad company to work for if you're looking for something seasonal to make money. If you're looking for somewhere to grow and learn, I dont suggest DeFord, they lack loyalty (even to some of the guys who have been there 10+ years), and if you think for yourself even remotely you won't go very far. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Enjoyed working with many of the other workers. very friendly and sometimes helpful.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Even though i enjoyed the pay checks the longs hours are hard on the home life. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
 A lot of favoritism to the drivers they like. 
 Some of the bosses like to talk about people behind their backs and do it in front of staff.  Lots of drama within the company.
Very well maintained trucks and equipment. Your equipment or truck don't get used till fixed.
Other then the bull, not a bad company to work with. Depends on who you talk to.


What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Get up go to work, go home and go to sleep.  Eat at some point. Repeat for the next 6 months.

long hours with demanding work load 

I learnt how to cope with long hours and minimal supervision, I also learnt how to operate heavy equipment and grade gravel and clay and for slab.

I feel the management was alright but they supervisors wear not very good and treated you like a number rather than a worker.

Everyone I worked with were very down to earth and hard working people that show up every day and did what they had to do!

I would have to say the hardest part or the day is the last few hours after working a 16 hour day and maybe the levelling of the gravel.

I would have to say the things I enjoyed the most about De ford is the physical work and the people that I worked with.

Figuring out the different asphalt silo drop patterns as they use many different asphalt suppliers

Good coworkers good Foreman's and safety and quality of work is actually a priority 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Show up, do pretrip inspection on truck, visit with dispatch to see if plans are going accordingly then leave shop to site

Only spent the end of the season with DeFord but I am definitely returning in the spring. The work is all over the city and surrounding areas. Occasionally we would have slow days but the work is usually fast paced and fun. Never doing the same thing everyday. Management was easy to talk to about my concerns (rarely had any) and very fair about needing time off. I worked decent hours, usually not more than 12 a day. Benefits are based on how many hours you've worked so I got them faster than if I had to stay working there for a certain period of time.

we deal with asphalt almost everyday and pave roads, parking lots and trails and patches, I have learned many skills on how to work with asphalt and how to make a great job look good. crew foreman's are very respectable and teach you skills to advance in the company. hardest part of the job is 35'C+ weather paving very large parking lots with long hours, but at the end of the day you feel accomplished and a job well done. most enjoyable part of the job is being with a crew who respect you and help you with your job and everyday life.

Worked as a labourer on an asphalt crew. The job is very demanding physically, with long hours and sometimes hot weather conditions. The team was generally good to work with, and I learned a lot about paving and equipment operation. However, management could be more organized, and work schedules were not always consistent. Overall, it’s a solid job if you don’t mind tough outdoor work, but not ideal for long term.

If you do your job and don't get  hurt  you are  fine

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
8 to 10 hours working with some  good friends

Employees who go above and beyond get the same treatment/ wage/ rewards as the employees who put in the very least amount of effort or who bring the least amount of skill to the table. Issues can be brought to management but fall on deaf ears. If you work here no need to put in extra effort in the end you’ll be remembered by nobody of authority and just another employee “number” to have been through the business
