I worked here over 3 years part-time and full- time when it was actually owned and run by the Canadian Diabetes Association. For over a year now it has exchanged ownership and calls itself National Diabetes Trust. Drivers are unionised, rules are not  followed and management plays favorites with routes and scheduling. Logistic and people skills are weak on side of management. Names are commonly whited out on route sheets to favor other drivers. Work loads have increased considerably since the take over by NDT. Perks drivers had before are now gone now. No incentive for doing routes quickly. 
 You will be expected to finish your routes or you will be in trouble or treated indifferent.  Severe weather conditions are ignored. Routes are made up in Toronto and sent to Alberta, each province has different pickup rules. Be prepared to have your spiel ready for disgruntled customers you can't pick up, you will be using it a lot.  
 The trucks are all rented with maintenance being very poor. eg. Tires falling off, brakes and engines failing. Be prepared to spend  time taken away from doing your route wasted at the front desk of the rental and service desk. You will be filling out service reports and renting different vehicles. You must also fill out a separate truck inspection report after. Depending on the office politics at that time you could be blamed for what goes wrong with the truck you were driving and your report scrutinized.
If you are a driver a typical day starts unloading donated bags of cloth and miscellaneous  boxed  items weighing anywhere from 10-70 lbs off of a 4-5 ton truck, by yourself. Each loaded truck can weigh from 3,500 to 8,000 lbs. The times it will take you to unload the truck at one of the 3 store locations will be anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. Most store locations where you will off load are staffed by slow and underpaid  employees who do not care or hurry to help and assist you to unload the truck.
After off loading your truck you will have a route sheet to pick up from 30-110 houses and bins, each house can have 1-50, or more items. Clothing bin locations within and outside the city can house anywhere from 1-100 garbage bags full of cloth and sharp items with added garbage dumped outside of bins. Hoarders at many locations reach into the bins with clothes hangers and rip open bags to steal cloth and you can expect to spend 5-60 minutes rebagging loose cloth and garbage. All donation bins are beacons for people to leave their garbage beside the bins. It will be your job also to remove and haul the garbage off to the dump. Garbage from these locations can be broken glass, dishwashers, wall units, tv's , mattress's, etc.
 It will  also be your job to hand out "Thank you" and "Sorry we missed you cards" at each of the 100 or more houses they will send you for pick up. It will leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling knowing your helping  leaving a "Thank you card" at the house that just left you a driveway full of 100 boxes and bags in sub zero or extreme heat temperatures. Handing out these cards is part of the job that will get to you eventually.
To this date no driver has made it or could ever make it to collect the pension that is offered to you after two years of full time employment. Injuries are high at this job because of the dangers you will regularly run into, so you must be extremely careful to look after yourself. You do not want to have to make injury claim here. Broken ankles, shoulder, knees, tendonitis, elbows, back injuries, hernia's, heart attack or stroke are to name a few and can happen doing your duties.
You must like to work and be fit lifting heavy objects in extreme heat and or freezing cold temperatures and you will be getting in and out of a truck over 200 times a day. The exercise is great but tainted with overwork and the recovery is minimal with only 2 days off. You will always be sore. 
You will be also be responsible for any tickets incurred (eg.distracted driving) if you are caught by law reading your map and or doing paperwork that is required by management to do your job properly. This job is not for the weak of heart. Many of the drivers miss bins and houses and you will have to pick up what they didn't because of their attitude. Only 2 swampers for over 9 drivers who are only sent out with complaining favorites and the injured. Money is ok but the wage is capped because it is a charity. It does not match the work they want you to do. I'm glad I no longer work there and now feel much healthier.I suggest part time to see if you like it first. Dynamics will change as soon as your full time and work loads will increase.

There is an extremely toxic work environment that breeds toxicity on every level. New employees that enter with hopefulness to achieve great things are quickly hit with the true nature of the organisation. Through incompetent leadership it has because obvious that bad behaviour is rewarded. If you are a keep your head down and do great work type of employee, you will eventually be picked on and bullied. Those that complain and demean others the loudest are rewarded and given the most power. 

Corporate bullying runs rampant as there are no consequences for screaming, berating, gaslighting or blatant misrepresentation and lying. All behaviours I've witnessed firsthand and most frequently by so-called leaders within the organisation. Instead individuals, who are on the receiving end of this mistreatment, are told to be more "collaborative" and "ignore the person because in the end you know the truth". The good employees are belittled and made to feel incompetent while the bad employees get the power to do whatever they want. This is especially prevalent in the the areas where raising money is the most important objective. 

It's a shame as the cause should be the first priority and concern but it's a fallacy. It's used as a reason for bad behaviour (they're just "passionate") instead of actually looking at the individual's achievements and behaviour for what they actually are. If it continues to be operated in this manner it will soon cease to exist. Other charities will begin to step in to take over and actually make an impact on the individuals who need help. Some have already begun to do so.

The following paragraphs are based on my own experience as a part-time, on-call driver for the Clothesline Programme, and are meant to prepare prospective employees for this position:

– Workweek regularly exceeds 50 hours, where 12-hr shifts are not uncommon.  This, while being classified as a part-time worker (i.e., no benefits; no stability);
– Frequently, two or three truckloads of garbage bags full of used clothes, shoes, etc. (totalling 8000 Lbs or more!) need to be transferred in the course of a day as a matter of course;
– Goods are generally dropped off at various Value Village stores in Ottawa, where store managers' attitude towards drivers is unbelievably disrespectful;
– The clothesline operation seems to be based on the presumption that no one would stay in this position for long, and that there would always be a hundred fools out there vying for it for anyone who quits or gets fired, hence: 
– Drivers are regularly fired, instantly and callously, with no warning, for any minor incident, however trivial and however irrelevant to the driver's attitude towards safety;
– Dismissal of drivers is conducted according to a protocol which seems to be based on the notion that drivers are simple, potentially violent individuals. It is a humiliating, degrading experience that would haunt one for a long time.

The 5 star review was written by the current manager in London.  He is a joke and lies through his teeth.

I was trained on easier routes for my first week with another driver.  Then as soon as I was alone my route was expanded and I was expected to work 13 hours on a daily basis.  

The pay is only good once you hit overtime. They don't mind paying overtime because they are already under paying you.  They can't keep staff so there was always overtime available.  However, If you do manage to hit overtime, your body is in such rough shape struggling to get there that it's not really worth it.  

A typical day is lifting a combination of bags of clothes or boxes of other smaller things (electronics, toys, kitchen stuff, etc.)  weighing a total of 6-8000lbs. You would load this into the truck and then unload it out of the truck in the middle of your run.  Driving on average 100km in the route.

Bonuses are few and far between.  The most I ever heard someone earned was $37 for a 2 week bonus.  There is also a bonus for 100% pick up.  This is unachievable because someone always forgets or isn't called. Yet they keep this bonus around, why?

Most people quit without giving notice and don't look back.

Morale there is so low, yet head office doesn't step in and fix things.

Working at the Canadian Diabetes Association has been an amazing experience. On an average day, I would come in and prepare packages to be sent out to various health fair locations. I would also send out volunteer reminders for the week. I would then enter in events into the Onyx database, and follow up with volunteers via email. In addition, there is usually something at the office to sort or do at the drop of a hat, like visit one of our health fairs, a meeting, or helping out one of the coordinators with whatever project they're working on. I mostly worked under the Community Events Coordinator, as well as aiding the Public Programs and Service Coordinator when needed. I feel welcomed here, even if I may not have a lot in common with my fellow employees, I always look forward to coming in. In my opinion, the hardest part of my day is trying to time what I need to do throughout the day. Working in the events industry, you're never sure as to what will happen in your day. My favourite part of this job has to be the amazing opportunities I can be a part of. I've learnt a lot about myself in this position as well as learning how a large not-for-profit organization works.

they do not honour employee contracts, threaten to fire people who insist their contract be honoured.
they offer promotions and raises in exchanged for taking on extra work and once you agree to the extra work they rescind the offer of promotion, raise.
management actively punishes employees that stand up for rights.
management will send you into dangerous conditions and condescend and insist you continue when you report that the conditions are so dangerous you can not safely continue.
pay is low, employee turnover was very high, they ask employees to pay out of pocket for things the company forgot or failed to pay for.
they are incredibly disorganized, they communicate horribly.

as for the work, mostly unsupervised, semi casual dress code, driving a truck with heat, ac and radio, lifting maybe 500-1000 lbs across the day onto a truck then from truck to trailer.

i liked the work but by god if management wasnt actively trying to be the worst they could possibly be. 

This is without a doubt the most poorly run operation.  One hand doesn’t know what the other is doing.  Started out as a “contract” diver and the lions share of the operating expenses.  I was supplied with a box of garbage bags and a storage unit. Most of the bins were a dumping ground for the people in town who were too cheap and lazy to take their stuff to the local dump.  Nevertheless, I was expected to load up this junk in my own vehicle and take it to the dump. For this hard work I was reimbursed the dumping fee and paid $15, regardless of how long or how many trips it took.  Which meant, many times I was working for less than $10 per hour.  You are expected to maintain (empty) these bins 7 days a week.  Be available with not much available notice to have your storage locker emptied.  I signed a one year contract to do this and in less than 3 months, they went from paying me $1.50 per bag to a “by the pound” wage and then arbitrarily ended my contract to make me one of their part-time drivers - driving one of their trucks for no less than 12 hours a days on a gruelling schedule.

Very poor company to work for don't care about the drivers god help you if you get hurt and can't drive  they take away your holiday pay   and fire you and  write on your roe you quit  op supervisor  insult you . Runs booked out of alberta if you don't meet you quota you writen   up   they ask you to drive more then allowed by law and then ask you to change your log book so there butts are covered   management  in head office is a joke they say they listen  but  never do any thing to help but all you get is more lies  if you want to work hard get treated like you replaceable  this is a job for you  office staff lie and gossip about other drivers    manager and op supervizors get bonus  off the backs of the  drivers that never see a bonus  and if you do its 30.00 and they make sure 
It all most impossible to get was there a year  work 10 to 12 hr a day loading and off loading 4500 to 6400 lbs of  clothing and house wares and never seen a bonus  if you want to reman sane and healthy stay far far away from this company not worth the stress or worse that can and  will happen to you

A typical day at work in this organization entails outbound call center operations and duties to donors across Canada, in search of donations of clothing and household items. These calls are handled through an average six hour shift, with a half hour break in between. In this position I learned to use CCDS systems which take residential home numbers and allow outbound calls to take place. As well, I was able to learn key issues facing not-for-profit organizations (like the CDA), and how heavily they rely on charity donations to keep running for their specific causes. Management style is task-based as opposed to a leadership style encouraging innovation and advancement. Although sometimes the tasks appear strenuous, the environment of friendly coworkers allows for a pleasant time spent while at work.

Got hired on the spot. They are constantly hirering because people don’t realize how hard the job is and quit after a day. 
The manager was amazing but she quit because upper management is toxic and have unreasonable expectations for the drivers. The new manager is a complete donkey. The pay is pathetic. The positive is that you get to work alone and don’t have to talk to anyone all day. But the job is brutally exhausting most days and your not appreciated at all. There’s no chance for advancement because management hires their unqualified friends over employees that know the job. I enjoy the 4 day work week at 10 hrs a day but your expected to stay longer everyday. The other drivers are great but everyone hates the job.
