I recently had the opportunity to work here, and I feel compelled to share my experience regarding their vacation policy and overall work-life balance. Unfortunately, my time there has been far from positive, particularly in terms of how vacation requests are handled.

From the very beginning, it became clear that requesting time off is a risky endeavor. During the recruitment stage, you are encouraged to disclose any vacation plans you may have, but this often feels more like a test than a genuine inquiry into your needs. If you mention a desire for time off, there's a strong likelihood that management may reconsider hiring you altogether. It creates a daunting atmosphere where your plans could jeopardize your chances of employment.

Once you are hired, the situation doesn't improve. If you attempt to request vacation time before your probation period is up, it seems to be a one-way ticket out of the company. Even after completing your probation, if you dare to ask for time off several months in advance, you may find yourself pressured to resign. This practice leaves little room for personal planning and makes it nearly impossible to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Moreover, the management team shows a concerning lack of support for employees' mental health and family needs. There are no clear policies in place that prioritize employee well-being, and any requests for understanding or flexibility are met with resistance. 

In summary, if you're considering a position, be prepared for a work environment that does not value your personal time or well-being. The lack of support from management and the stringent vacation policies create a challenging atmosphere that is not conducive to a healthy work-life balance. I would advise potential employees to think carefully about whether this is the right fit for them.

I worked at Dixon Hall for 3 months during COVID. When I was hired, I was promised that I would be working from home except for rare emergencies. I did work from home at times, but I couldn't mainly, because I was never given access to a laptop with the software to input my data. Management was inexperienced and indifferent to my work and stress. I was asked to handle about 20 clients, without being given any training whatsoever. Most of them were suicidal, one was admitted to hospital for this. No one cared how I was handling the stress of daily suicide threats or travelling to work during COVID, two hours on the TTC. The other Case Managers were not held to the same standard. I found out I was the only one seeing clients. I quit to protect my health and personal safety.

Dixon Hall Neighbourhood Services is a multi-service agency. Population served are youth, homeless, seniors, individuals who are disabled.

There is no "typical" day at work, every day is different, presents new challenges and rewards. I have learned a great deal about the area that our services are provided in, the number of additional and diverse social services in this area as well. 

The staff at DHNS are fantastic to work with. Everyone pulls together as a team to help those in need. Management is fair and approachable.

The hardest part of the job is also the most rewarding. Seeing those who are affected by low income/poverty and crime on a daily basis and strive to achieve greatness despite this.

Dixon Hall Neighbourhood Services provides programs and services to people living in east downtown Toronto with varied means, abilities, and situations.  Working at Dixon Hall helped me better understand the challenges experienced by people when faced with food insecurity, who are housing compromised, experience language barriers, and who want to  get involved to effect change.  Keeping on top of current trends and needs is key to be able to provide the best service to clients and to supporting volunteers.

I loved working at Dixon Hall and meeting all the staff, volunteers and clients. They all made me feel right at home and were so helpful. I loved coming to work everyday, and left feeling satisfied and blessed by the connections. It is rare to find a place of employment where you benefit as much as the clients. I highly recommend working for this team of amazing people who are making such a difference in Toronto.

Generally a positive environment and opportunities available to grow and learn new social skills. Limited career enhancement opportunities available. Being open to the day to day challenges and offering any assistance is key to a successful experience and team building.

Very well cultured and they maintain respect to clients and their rights

You are given chance to explore new skills through trainings.friendly staff .the work load is not stressful life and as staff you are given a chance to share ideas on how to reach a common goal when serving our clients .

As with COSTI, I helped people on a daily basis with their employment, education, an other needs in collaboration with the team at Dixon Hall and our other community partners.

The most enjoyable part of the job was to see clients do well with our assistance.
