Working at EB Games is hard work for what you get paid. Employees are constantly being reminded to push sales, especially for items we don't actually support for the best interest of our favourite customers. The selling culture at EB is intense. This is not the place for you if you genuinely love giving recommendations for good products, because the chances are that those products don't make the company money, therefore you get in trouble.

I did love working at EB Games for a while. 
Here are some reasons I enjoyed it: 
-I had a good manager who I was comfortable around. He was very understanding of mental health issues, allowed us to take food breaks if we needed it (which should be standard but unfortunately it is not), and he was very flexible with the schedule.
-The customers are always so fun to interact with. I made so many customer-friends. Sometimes I feel like going back there just for them.
-I got to be around videogames (the discount is only 5% more than the edge platinum card).
-Amazing coworkers

Unfortunately, EB Games as a culture drained my mental health. I, a person who is passionate about things she loves (namely video games), became unenthusiastic about everything. I was constantly told to stop trying to sell good products and only sell ones that made EB money. Sure, it is sales, I should have known better when getting myself into it; however, I think EB implements selling culture in a way that makes passionate workers hate themselves. With that said, my manager did this constructively, so I never felt overly pressured by him, it was more of just a painful reminder.

So, for the cons:
-My manager was great, but he was addicted to his job and that took a big toll on all of us working there. He would be there all of the time micro-managing everything. This is only a minor con, though, because in some ways it was his strength.
-Some customers were gross to women/sexist, and you get a lot of old mean people coming in. Another minor con.
-Selling culture literally sucked the soul out of me. This is the main reason I quit EB Games. I felt so sad after every shift because I felt like my passion and interests were being dampened by the company. I wasn't able to talk with customers as much toward the end (because I would talk to them in full conversations, which I understand isn't "professional". But these conversations often led to huge sales). I had to straight up lie to people's faces when my boss would say "this is better and cheaper" and a customer would ask if it was true and I had to say yes. 

In all, I wouldn't say working at EB Games is a horrible job. In fact, I often miss it because the good is so good. But, I couldn't handle being held back in terms of my personality. I worked there for a little over a year - started as a temp and was asked to stay on. It was only in the last 3 months of my job where I started feeling defeated. Almost all of the people I started with quit too for the same reasons. So, I would recommend this as a temporary gig! 

I gave this a 3.8 star rating because I think this job could really suit some people. 

In this world you never get something for nothing, this has never been as true as it is working for EB Games Canada.

The benefits as a Store Manager are the only redeeming quality of this job.  You make decent money, get some sick and vacation days, and they fly you out to a vendor show once a year (usually in western Canada) were they shower you with free stuff for five days.

You are required to work a minimum of two closing shifts each week and can only take one weekend a month off.  During the Christmas holiday season they force you into working six days a week but only pay you for five of those six days (they give you 1.5 days off for each extra day worked in December, but you can only use that extra COMP TIME between January and March) 

As a Store Manager you are the ONLY salaried employee in your store, which means when they dump a large task on you with an UNREASONABLE timeline for completion it all falls on your shoulders.  

They tell you and your staff that you will never get in trouble for doing whats right for the customer, but then when you do whats "RIGHT" for the customer their tune changes completely.

EDGE cards, Game Play Guarantees, Product Replacement Plans, Selling used over new, and Market Force Surveys, all of these have quotas your expected to hit, and if you don't hit them all than consider your job to be in jeopardy BECAUSE IT IS.

Depending on the volume of sales your store does you might get between 115-140 hours a week to schedule, but the store manager uses up 40 of those hours and the assistant manager uses 37.5 of those hours.  Ever tired to convince part time employees averaging less than 10 hours a week to care about quotas? 

your part time employees are allowed to have a second job, so long as they remember that their loyalty must be to EB first, they will be required to sign off on a employee handbook that more or less states that fact.

Regardless of the situation it's your job to keep the Assistant Manager and the part time employees happy, if you don't and people start leaving, YOU SHOULD START LOOKING FOR A NEW JOB TOO..

The District Manager will tell you that they are there to support you if necessary, that"s a lie, they are there to collect a VERY LARGE bonus based on your success.  So remember you are only as valuable to them as you are successful, 

Despite what they will tell you career advancement is almost non-existent once you become a store manager.  The truly blood thirsty managers, the ones with a take no prisoners attitude are the only ones who will ever come close to a home office or field leadership role, the rest of their managers are slowly fazed out for people they can pay less money to.

Honestly you'll get hired, drink the juice, feel comfortable in your job for a period of time and suddenly find yourself out of work and wondering were the years have gone. 

You can do better than this place.

Working at EB games is like being paid to be a nerd. You get to spend all day discussing video games and nerdy culture while trying to sell those products. It's always a fun day and it's hard to be bored. 

I have learned a lot about customer service and how to sell a product working at EB games. Trying to keep up to date with all the current gaming knowledge and information is a full time task in itself, you must make sure you are up to date on console specs and updates, make sure you know upcoming games, stats, reviews, information, and add-on information. So i have also learned how and where to keep up to date with accurate information. 
 But this is all work expected to be done on your own time, since the management above store level doesn't spend a lot of time with their stores, you hardly ever see them. So the stores are pretty much left to fend for themselves and figure things out on their own. which is not the best strategy for retail stores. It leads to customers becoming irritated and not happy when certain product isn't or we haven't been informed of current promotions because the emails weren't sent to us yet. 
And job security is a joke.  The management above store level will ALWAYS put the customer first. No matter how rude, beligerent, threatening a customer was to you they will always put them first. I have seen coworkers be slashed hours for a fabrication that a customer told head office about. 

Howevor the people you work with have been some of the best coworkers i have had. It is always fun to walk into work and just discuss nerdy topics or video games. 
The hardest part of the job is the fact it's just an entry level and that their is hardly ANY future for growth at EB. With the current hiring practices they have had since I began, it is impossible to move up within the company to anywhere higher than a sales associate. Which kills any sort of drive or motivation to do well within the company. How can you do well when you know there is nowhere to move up too, that you will forevor be stuck at the lowest end. And they promise things they don't follow up on, like prizes and gifts. So that also kills the drive. 

Howevor! the people at the store level are some of the best. Always enjoying the day and who can be mad when you are talking about video games and nerdy culture all day long! The most enjoyable aspect of it is that it is about gaming and something i am passionate about.

EB Games (specifically my location) hires some of the best workers in retail. The people are passionate, knowledgable and fun to be around. Of course, being that it's a retail job, there are negative elements to the job, but our employees never let that get them down, and are always ready to treat the next customer with respect and kindness. 

My typical day at work involves: 
- the completion of administrative duties - tracking successes and failures in relation to store budgets and goals, setting those goals on a per employee basis, completing employee coaching plans to help them achieve their goals and improve their workplace efficiency.
-Receiving daily shipping, logging inventory and creatively marketing the product.
-Assisting customers - helping our guests find what they need through extensive product knowledge and exceptional interpersonal skills.

Through this position, I've gained several invaluable skills. My problem solving abilities have improved, I've learned and refined my management techniques, I've become a more well-spoken individual, I've learned to be an efficient independent worker and a good leader as well as an effective member of a team. My visual marketing skills have improved and I've learned how to track and manage budgets, schedule effectively and set goals and plans for success.

The hardest part of the job is dealing with irate individuals, unhappy with something that is beyond your control. More often than not I find that these people are not angry with you (and sometimes not even with the company) but are just looking for an outlet to let off some steam. The only thing you can do is provide the friendliest service you can, and not take their anger personally. 

The most enjoyable part of the job is getting to work in an industry that I have always adored. Games have always been a huge part of my life, and being part of the conversation when new, interesting games are released is always exciting.

EB Games is typically a very fun environment to work in for people who play and enjoy video games. Depending on the volume of the store one works at and who their manager is is really what defines your success in the company. Higher volume stores have more hours to work with weekly, which allows associates to work enough to barely make a living. Store associates are never hired on a full-time basis and are never eligible for benefits. Store associate positions would be typically ideal for a college student or late-high school student, but the company wants to hire experienced people who have a full-time availability even though they will only be able to schedule you part-time. Scheduling is highly inconsistent and changes from week-to-week and season to season, making it difficult to even supplement your income with another part-time job. Moving up to management from an associate is really a gamblemanagement will give you a list of tasks and goals you need to meet but these are negligible. In order to move up you have to have a manager on your side who is in good standing with the district manager and upper management, and even then many associates are stuck doing management work with the pay and lack of benefits as an associate. There are opportunities for raises, if I recall it is a max of 30 cents every 3 months, which has been made negligible by Albertas minimum wage increase. The company expects exceptional sales and product movement by their employees, but ignores repair requests and stores often go months or even years with outdated store supplies. The Point of Sale system is also extremely outdated and is not actually finished. Most of the functions it's supposed to have were never implemented and the inventory lookup has no organization and is often down or inaccurate. Moving up in the company is essentially a game of politics and luck. As fun as it is and as wonderful as the people are in this place the company expects too much of it's associates and gives them sub-par equipment and programs to work with.

EB Games is honestly a joy to work for when you have a store that has a collaborative team working for it. Most managers are an absolute joy to work for, and are always looking for ways to teach and be taught how to become a better employee. As a retail store, EB Games focuses heavily on customer interactions. More often than not, you will find that each store has regular customers, and that the employees actually develop a friendship with these regulars. The customer interaction of EB Games is often one of the most rewarding experiences of the job. 
This job is one that you need to take your time to learn the policies, the products, and the many forms of transactions within the job. It is very important to pay attention to training and coaching. Knowing policies, and benefits regarding their EDGE memberships is extremely important. Knowledge of product is also very important, new vs. pre-owned, different types of games, the quality of gaming accessories, etc. 
Provided that you as a sales associate, and your store as a whole does well enough, yearly raises are very common. I personally was lucky enough to receive a pay raise less than 6 months into my employment due to the timing of me being hired.
The company definitely has a "demographic" that tends to be hired, and that would be "fun-loving nerd". It is very difficult to find an employee at EB Games that you do not get along with. Everyone likes games, everyone likes to geek out on different things, and employees support each other in their inherent nerdyness. Upper management is just as fun loving and are also a joy to work with. 
District and Area managers are often present and available to all employees, it is common to receive visits from upper management, however it does not change the environment of the store.

Not a place I would ever suggest someone stay longer than the three month probationary period, this should be a place you work if you are in dire need of a job, and have no other options left to you. The motto I was told on day one was, cover your own back, because no one else in this company will, and sadly it is true. 
The co workers are fine, wonderful people, mostly younger kids who are working through school, or in a transitionary period looking for what they'd like to do later in life. 
The management, on the other hand, has highly unrealistic goals of it's workers and its staff, with no compensation or real payout for the work they put in, but if it's not done, the long line of ensuing threats will motivate most into doing so. The hardest part is staying motivated, to want to help the store succeed; after being treated the way you do, with no one to really help or guide you, there's not a whole lot you want to do to help the store, or company. Next to minimum wage with no raises or bonuses or concrete goals in sight, doesn't help to motivate much either.
The only saving grace about this place, is the sales associates, they are wonderful people selling things they love, and are usually happy about it, until payday, when they see all the hard work and effort they put in, the times they came in to cover for someone, or just for extra coverage, the fights with customers they deal with, and the disrespect from their management they receive, boil down to minimum wages. It's crushing. 

The management knows and openly reminds its staff of the mountain of resumes in the back room, solidifying the expendability of everyone, so there's no real respect going either way.

bad company, bad work environment, terrible pay, and a horrible work/life balance. Never will I support this work place, or company again after seeing how it's run.

Since EB games is usually a small store, we only had 7 or 8 employees, you really have to like the people you work with. Luckily I worked with some really awesome people, The manager who hired me was great, understanding, organized, outgoing, I actually looked forward to my shifts with him! But after close to a year of working there he moved on and the guy who replaced him made me hate my job. The benefits and wage were sub par, and the work itself was nothing special, lots of alphabetizing, some upselling, helping customers (more so around christmas, the rest of the year was mostly gamers that knew what they wanted), and handling trade ins and transactions, but I got along well with my co workers, we had fun, and I also enjoyed talking to a lot of the customers. But when we got the new manager he had a very aggressive management style that the rest of us weren't really used to,  before him we were meeting goals and maintaining the store just fine, but he came from mcdonalds and tried to run EB the same way, he was horrible to work with, constantly making us do trivial and largely unnecessary tasks, not allowing us to socialize with each other (even when we were still getting work done), constantly keeping one eye on us and criticizing our work, going as far as to criticize the way I kneeled on the floor to alphabetize the bottom shelves, and making us adhere to a dress code that not even the district manager followed or enforced. Me and a few of my co workers quit after he started, he kind of ruined an awesome workplace.

On a typical day at EB Games, one may perform cycle counts, be required to re-merchandise a section of the store or be tasked to prepare traded in games to be put away. During this time employees were expected to deliver excellent customer service while performing their other tasks. Sales usually involved up selling warranties for video games and accessories as well as related merchandise for the product the customer was buying.

EB Games is a great place to learn and improve basic work place skills such as customer service, cash handling, time management and performing different tasks. Management does an excellent job of ensuring all associates are up to company standards in a short amount of time. Also management maintains a well balanced work place culture ensuring everyone was satisfied at the job.

When considering new hires, work place synergy is also taken in to account. This ensures that almost all workers are compatible or at the least able to work together professionally. The most difficult part of EB Games is staying there. While management may disagree there is little room for growth from a store associate outside of the stores boundaries. This makes it difficult for one to continue to work at the company, as dedication and hard work are not rewarded in kind.

On the other hand, the most enjoyable part of the job was being able to work with a passion and hobby; video games. Almost everyone coming into the store was looking for a new game to play giving an plethora of opportunities to discuss video games and find out what is new, good, bad or any where in between.

As a senior customer service adviser, my responsibilities for the day involved checking emails while taking on immediate customer care calls throughout the day. This involved providing customer support and care with online orders, confidential credit card information, inquiries, answering inbound calls regarding company standard practices, responding to email inquiries for assistance. All while being the "voice of the company" and responding to customer inquiries in a polite, courteous, professional, and well-informed manner. Steps for the appropriate actions were taken based on client needs. I 
would come up with various strategies with my team very often anytime a more complicated issue may have been brought to our attention. I've learned to further developed my customer care abilities as well as my personal and interpersonal relationships with those in the same work environment. Additionally furthering my attention to detail, ability to multitask, and excellent problem-solving skills as well as adhere to various changes in work pressure while prioritizing customers and business practices. The environment itself was often stressful as we dealt with various customers all with different needs and often they would  contact us through our toll-free line and use that as a means to express their negative thoughts throughout the day. While trying to manage difficult customer expectations, the most enjoyable part was being able to provide adequate solutions for customers.
