Working for Eastern Health consists of very busy day doing Data Entry. Here in NL most of the lab work that is taken has to be frozen and sent to our main lab in our Capital City. When the blood work is received at the lab, as a clerk I spend most of my everyday entering any needs tests required for each patient so that their results may be completed. Also throughout the day I am required to company any needed orders for supplies for the office and send it to our stores department . Also the main line for the lab comes through my office so most times I just have to direct people in the right direction. Also if any doctors have questions concerning blood work they also contact myself or 3 of my other co workers in the same office. My job also consists of many other things like scanning, copying, mail and such forth.

Through out my years working for Eastern Health I have what meet what I would call a great circle of friends or what some others would call their work family. As for management it is like everywhere you work through out you life and that is you get some great and some bad. For the most part I have no complaints.

This current job I can honestly say there is nothing hard. I have a very busy day each and most days I don't even get to break but I really enjoy it. Its not something I mind at all.

The most enjoyable part of my job would be that I know after everyday I leave I know that I put 150% in my job and just because I put that little bit more into means I made it that much quicker for some sick person receiving any needed result to making them feel better.

EH does not care about new hires at all, and wonders why they can't keep casual staff.
ALL new hires MUST be casual starting off, and may only become a permanent employee if they get selected when applying via internal postings - which will always go to someone with higher seniority regardless of skill.

When you get hired, you have no choice in which department you work in. You are given a "site" which is the area you cover, which can be anywhere from 3-20 departments (or more), and you're expected to cover ALL departments. 

You get no real training most times, and even if you do, you may only be in a place for 2 days and then you might not be back for months, but you still have to remember everything you were taught 3 months ago.

The pay is decent, there's swing and weekend differentials, and you get paid sick and vacation leave, but there is no flexibility AT ALL for shifts as a casual. I needed 2  hours off for an appointment and I was told I needed to use vacation time to get it approved.
Mind you, the shifts are generally 12hr so it is impossible to keep appointments before or after work.

As a casual, you also have no say over whether you want day or overnight shifts. If your "site" has any overnight departments, be prepared to constantly swap from 7:30am shift to 7:30pm shifts with only a day rest, and vice versa.

The only redeeming factor really is the people and job security. In my experience department managers and charge nurses don't expect much from casuals because of the points I mentioned above, so they are willing to help out when you have questions or don't know how to do something.

•	Admitting new residents into a system of daily recording keeping documents
•	Ensuring all next of kin are entered into all mail merges and email distribution list 
•	Purging of deceased residents information
•	Organizing all Orientation of New Hires 
•	Organization of Memorial Services
•	Ensuring all daily record keeping documents are up to date with resident admissions, deaths and room changes
•	Typing Memos/Letters for all Managers of Administration, Nursing, Support Services and Recreation Departments.
•	Typing/creating any documents needed for all departments of the home, such as calendars, schedules, tables, charts, menus etc.
•	Setting up all staff education and a complete running list of each employee’s education, ensuring all staff attended required education. 
•	Secretary for various committees, completing minutes, organizing meetings through Microsoft Outlook 
•	Organizing Fire Drill schedules to ensure monthly requirements are met by Eastern Health’s, Health Emergency Management Committee and The St. John’s Fire Regional Department
•	Filing/Organizing

Working for Eastern Health was such a blessing!  Unfortunately, I don't work there anymore due to some health issues I had to deal with promptly and sadly I wasn't able to be that excellent employee they deserve and require.  Fast paced environment with lots of opportunities to advance or even if you want to expand your career or learn new skills once you are an employee of EH you could always apply in a variety of areas, everything from  nursing, laboratory, radiology, respiratory staff to clerks and housekeepers. Excellent pay with great benefits, loved my hours, management was very respectable truly values it's employees and their wellbeing.  

Mental health and physical well being is not worth working here in certain areas of the company, Human Resources, pits people against each other. They laugh at your misfortunes, they do not support a sick employee. If you were sick or have disabilities, do not go to work here,  it made me worse. I had a fear every day I’m going to work at the end fear of what’s going to happen today. Fear of who’s going to be causing drama fear of what is management going to add onto my duties today how many roles am I going to be filling? I feel three roles one day. 

Management is not unionized, so it is a different ball game dealing with them and they might have less education and what you have  doing what ever field you work in. 

Employees cutthroat for senority reasons, stab you in the bag to get ahead

Professional cleaners do harder work than anyone else in the hospital. They are underpaid and disrespected regularly even though without them everyone would get sick. It's a hard job with not that great pay. You have to clean some of the worst messes you have ever seen in your life and you got people calling you housekeeping in stead of environmental services. They often work you like a dog. I had a run once where I had 7 minutes to do each room when I done the math. This was rediculous. Also dont even apply for this job if you have a weak stomach. Wouldn't go  back to this job for 30$ an hour with the economy now I'd want at least 40$ an hour to deal with that job ever again. 

I worked with Eastern Health 28 years and watched it cut to the bone, put so much stress on workers to the point of breaking them, many quit to move on to other things. Injured workers are treated badly by upper management. There is no sense of pride or treating workers with compassion. The early years we worked within budget and workers were treated with respect. Family enviroment where work got done on time and we looked out for each other. As the cuts and joining boards came the atmosphere became all money no care. It was awful place to work. If you were injured, you were treated badly until you broke. That happened more common as years went forward. The waste of money on the top level was so evident it became a joke. Gone are the days where you felt appreciated for your work more of work you to the bone until your injured and drove out the door. 


Lot of people wanted to work at Eastern Health, I must say Im one on them. I came from Prairie land seeking better opportunity at Newfoundland. Luckily, my field of interest isn’t in demand in the Province. That’s why I venture into different line of work. Months of waiting after I sent my resume at Eastern Health and they finally called me out for interview. Excited! The feeling I had days before the interview. And I got it! I got the job. When I started my training, feels like this is not my passion. This is not what I expected. Stressful days, trainers looking at you up and down ‘might be thinking’ I know nothing. But what I did? I showed them that Im a hardworking person. I learned to love the job I have each day they call me for work. I learned to balance my personal time and work. I showed people that I know how to go along with them, and they love me in every site/place that I work. And they show me that I am welcome as a family at work. 😊

A warehouse health and safety scan for anything that could jeopardize myself or any employee within the warehouse. Working within all departments, I've learned how a warehouse operates, and what dangers draw attention. Working with people from different diversities gave me a positive attitude towards change and individual differences
The physical lifting when hand bombing items could sometimes be heavy and repetitious, and floors could sometimes become wet and slippery, causing machines to slide; extreme caution is needed at all times
The most enjoyable part of the job was my co-workers, we became like a close family; which made any company function that much more enjoyable

Fast pace environment, enjoyed my work very much.  Managed staff of approximately 25 payroll staff.  Liaison with various government department and other independent organizations.  Responsible for all our revenue Canada account reconciliations. I was a part of the interview committee for payroll and other clerical positions.  I was one of the team leaders with consolidation of 39 payroll systems to one major payroll within Eastern Health. Worked with our Human Resources dept with respect to the  accreditation process with our organization. Responsible for different union contracts, Nape, Nurses, allied health, management, non union, lab-X-ray groups etc.
