It was not good from the moment I started, unclear on what my role was from the start. Applied to be something else they saw I had PSW experience and med training and asked how I’d feel about doing the meds… just meds…I agreed until I realized it was not just meds they wanted me to be a PSW… alone… only watching 20 residents which wouldn’t be so bad until I realized a lot of residents were not independent and required two person transfers and a lot of redirecting, took a long time to get a schedule for a while they would just call me and ask me to work. After speaking multiple times to multiple different managers letting them know I could only work weekends as mentioned right in the interview process and confirmed with other managers I noticed they scheduled me for weekdays (I’m in school during the week and I let them know this before the interview as well) managers didn’t answer me to acknowledge this even though it was spoken of prior in fact that’s my main problem right there… managers don’t answer unless it’s something they want. Impossible to get them to answer when I wasn’t paid for a month, impossible to get them to answer when I was not receiving my lunches due to being flooded with tasks that were not originally my tasks such as dishes and housekeeping…. But the moment they need someone to work late or come on your day off you will be flooded with communication. Don’t expect pay for lunches even though you only work alone they ask that you ask every resident not to use call bell instead. Management is not good at all. 

Management mostly stay in their offices and do not help out when short staffed, not even for nursing/resident care. Only “on the floor” when the ministry is in the building. 
Very bad communication between department management and their staff. Most managers are bossy dictators who seem to be angry at staff all the time and don’t even know how to do the jobs they are supervising.
Menu is always the same.  
Don’t have proper equipment for meal delivery so residents always get cold room service meals. 
Breakfast and lunch hot meals are served on cold plates. Only dinner plates are warmed just barely. 
Toilet paper is cheap and a thin 1-ply for residents and staff.
Job training time is only 3 shifts. Too much to learn in 3 shifts before you are on your own. 
Staff room and resident dining room is always filthy. 
Smokers are allowed more breaks than non smokers. No discipline for those smokers who take multiple smoke breaks. 
Facility is always short staffed. 
No maintenance persons on weekends, they get Monday to Friday hours and all stat holidays off while the rest of staff are on shift lines that include weekends and holidays. 

My experience working at this nursing home raised significant concerns about compliance and workplace safety. Throughout my time there, I observed ongoing issues that suggested the facility was struggling to reach expected regulatory and professional standards. These challenges often created an environment that felt unstable and placed stress on nursing staff. While many staff members genuinely cared about the residents, the overall structure and leadership did not consistently promote the level of organization, accountability, or regulatory adherence required in a longterm care setting. This created situations where nurses worried that the facility's internal practices could put their professional licensed at risk. 

I hope the organization has taken necessary steps to address these concerns, strengthen compliance, and better support both staff and residents moving forward since my resignation.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Not much besides the residents. Management expects you to do extra and will call/text at all hours of day and night.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Phone calls/ texts at all hours. Always short staffed and the doctor(his family owns the place) seems negligent. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Bad and toxic.  Long term staff leaving due to new ownership taking over about two  years ago. Management promotes nepotism by hiring their kids in other positions there.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Stressful  and difficult with not much support

Where to begin … I took the PSW course because I had a love for taking care of people but within a month of working in this toxic environment I was completely stressed out all the time . This place will drain the life out you , and no matter how much effort you put in it goes unnoticed and unappreciated.  Management pretends to care but are rarely seen unless the ministry is in  , residents are suffering daily due to staffing shortages , no real training due to lack of staff .  I felt lost and unsupported by both staff and management . No point in reporting as nothing is ever done about it .  

Time management is of upmost importance, care and safety of residents is number priority. All changes to residents, skin, health, behaviour, is to be reported immediately to registered stafv and documented. Complete accurate documention is very important, as having the most interaction with the residents, any changes positive or negative to to be past along to the next shift for the best care to be given.

management loves to pin staff members against one another. you get calls/ texts all hours of the night about work. ministry is CONSTANTLY in for CI's. staff members form groups with the seniority staff being rude to  newer staff. I could go on for days on why this home was terrible to work for. the only saving grace was the residents and seeing them smile or interacting with them every day.

Expectations were high and hard to meet. From the time I started till the time they dismissed me (with no explanation as to why) I felt my work was substandard. I continued to ask for some more help but to no avail.

I worked here as PSW.
Always short staff and they hire here doesn’t have PSW certificate. Management doesn’t care about the staff and residents. They are always in the office but once Ministry comes they make the greatest drama of all time and they are on the floor.🙄🙄🙄 

First and last experience working as PSW because of this place. Profits is all that matters. Since change in management the new administration has ran home down. Short staffed is normal in health care, but people who has been there for 15 plus years all leave something isn't right.
