Edmonton public Schools offers its teachers high salaries and very good benefits except for dental benefits.

It provides inservices to its teachers who wish to gain expertise in their field. 

On a day to day basis there is usually good comraderie and collaboration among teachers but the same is not often the case between principles and teachers.Principals act in the role of businessmen more so than educators these days.

The climate for substitute teacher isn't as positive. Principles do not support substitute teachers and teachers vary n their approval of them.Thus the hardest part of the job for Substitute teachers is to recognize what direction to take that is the most favorable in each school they walk into.

The most favorable part of a substitute's job in Edmonton Public Schools is the variety of schools and programs in which they may teach.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part of my job was seeing the growth in the kids and loving them

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Being under paid for a job as an Educational Assistant. We worked our butts off  and had to wear many hats everyday 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work was always very busy and as an Educational Assistant you were always at the bottom of the pecking order.. so at some schools your voice was not heard and you may not feel validated. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very busy helping kiddos from the time I stepped into the building. I would take 1-8 kids out of the class and work with them in a different space or stay in the classroom and help teach there.

I feel fortunate to be employed by this organization and am grateful for the opportunity to guide and support young people's learning. Working with students and dedicated professionals enriches my skills as an educator and has enhanced my own personal growth. The work/life balance is unparalleled. If you love to guide young minds, believe that all children are capable of learning and you are also personally motivated to understand with the use of flexible and creative thinking, then this is the environment for you.

My job was to teach students but I often felt I was the one learning. Amazing opportunities to work with children of a multitude of backgrounds and cultures, as I taught close to international student housing. I wrote curriculum, coached running clubs, took my students to Jasper to expand their horizons and experience the diversity of the province and designed numerous environmentally friendly activities for my students to develop an awareness of responsible citizenship. Always, I had the full support of my administration. Exhausting work but so rewarding. 

The Support staff group is not appreciated by this employer. Educational Assistants on average make a salary of $35,000 per year. The support staff are on strike - January 13 2025 to current date of Feb 24 2025.  This used to be the Employer of Choice in 2008, it is no longer an employer of choice. They focus on inclusion for students but do not value the educational assistants who work with special needs students in the classrooms. This shows in the salary they pay these workers who work with these children.

I have served mainly two schools until now, I have an awesome experience about their work culture , validating your opinions and responses while working with kids, lots to say more about my experience here ! 
Now I am in the queue to get Alberta teaching certificate , evaluation is going on , one single part is left, hopefully would get it done this year sometimes and will be a certified teacher,

A great group of people working towards the betterment of students futures.  I enjoyed my time there and the pay and benefits were fantastic. If you have an educational background, you will fit in well, if not, it may present some culture shock if you come into the group from the private sector, but compared to other organizations I have worked for in the past - it was manageable. Work life balance is pretty good and again - I learned a lot while on the job that has helped me since leaving this position.

I have been a sub for three years and yet I don't feel any closer to getting a job or being recognized in any way. I don't like having to scramble to find work every summer, and the holidays during Christmas and Spring Break are also difficult because they are not paid. I enjoy the freedom of subbing, but would rather have a dependable, stable income and a place to go where people know me.

From 8:30 - 3:30 it is go, go, go when the students arrive for school; from 3:30 - 4:30 or 5:30, it is planning for the next day and marking that day's work and marking in the evening too many times

I learned a great deal from knowlege of the curriculum to knowledge of childrens' psychological development to working with staff (Educational assistants especially) to dealing with difficult people (sometimes parents)

High demand job, great kids to work with. supported the class room,or individual. Supervised at break times helped other staff as needed.

The hardest part of this job was having no stability never knowing when or where you would work each day or if you would work.

The best part of the day was the kids.

I learned I need a stable job so that I know whats happening and can plan my life at work and home in tandem.
