Elbow River Casino

The Casino’s disgraceful Food Safety practices are extremely concerning. From finding rocks and industrial staples in the Asian food, using a non-functioning main dishwasher for months knowing that it doesn’t dispense soap or reach the proper temperatures to clean dishes, not washing or storing cutlery properly, Guests reporting that Asian cooks were not washing their hands after using the washroom, leaving frozen food out on the floor to thaw, leaving raw chicken hanging in the main fridge with fruit and vegetables and having an infestation of fruit flies. The fact that the kitchen’s Chef, the owner and the GM have known about these issues for years and have done nothing about them clearly helps showcase their values, morals and ethics, as well as a total disregard for their own Guest's food safety.
 
I was a Supervisor for almost 2 years and during that time I worked with employees to create the first ever copies of department training manuals, helped revise policies and procedures, implemented and oversaw ideas that generated Thousands of dollars in revenue, never took a sick day, only took one day off when our baby was born, never had a warning, write-up or discussion, worked 86 of 92 weekends since I started, yet I was “Terminated without Cause”, for “no longer being a good fit with the company”. Makes you wonder what their idea of a ‘good fit’ is and why they considered me such a good fit for almost two years. My guess is that when an employee is trying to openly implement Health and Food Safety regulations, and improve Guest Standards to follow Canadian and Provincial law, they would just rather just eliminate them.  

In my relatively short time at the Elbow River Casino I witnessed 5 Managers and 8 Supervisors pass through our office doors. I now feel that you cannot morally work for this business knowing the violations that it willfully commits on a daily basis.

An extremely hot and cramped kitchen, kicking out menu items that are half fresh, half frozen. Large Asian menu that consumes the prep area, and shoulder to shoulder fight for work space is common. No one cares about their job, and many who have been there for years, could care less about the new people, and get through their day with doing as little as possible. The kitchen management is the same, with a chef who is clearly more experienced than the food being put out, and is in the downside of his career, and could care less. And a sous chef who is a product of boston pizza. The two of them create an atmosphere of get your job done, but don't go beyond your job title . Front of the house staff have no regard for the work the kitchen does, and frequently argue and demand higher service from the line cooks. Arguments about the food quality, timing and effort are common among the service staff who are not  tempered in their kitchen staff attitude. Overall, this place has a tough time finding and retaining people, and it doesn't take long to figure out why. If you want a paycheck, common arguments, fighting, scratching and clawing through out your shift, the Elbow River casino is for you. If you want to learn, make some quality food, or ever get a raise,...stay away. They will get you in with a higher than industry pay scale, but in interviews they openly say, you can never expect a raise.

Do not work f&b here. I only rate 1 star because I cannot rate 0 stars. The food and beverage (f&b) management is the worst I have ever seen. I was screamed at too many times to count, over things that were often completely out of my control, but they will never fire you because they are too short staffed. Due to this, they hire literally anyone they can find since no one wants to work here because of the f&b management. Between the abundance of favoritism from the f&b management, and the lack of properly screening new employees, there is tons of drama amongst the staff (most of which all stems from the small handful of managements favorites). Extremely high turnover in f&b since everyone quits after realizing this, so don’t even waste your time. Supervisors are okay on the occasions that they do offer to help the staff. F&b management hands out write ups like candy, even an absolutely stellar employee would be lucky to make it a month or two here without at least one write up. HR is completely useless when it comes to dealing with problems. The gaming side seems okay, and cocktail waitressing the tips are not bad if you can handle the rudeness of the customers. All in all, it is not worth it, and there are so many other casinos and bars in Calgary to work at, so please don’t waste your time.

Working both opening and closing shifts I endured different routines from time to time. However, for the most part I would spend the majority of my day handling large sums of cash and registering confidential information into the computer system. All day I performed lottery and merchandise sales. I learned that no matter how great or poorly someone treats you its never your responsibility to feel their words reflect your personality; a bully simply reflects their own personality through hurtful interactions.. Though I always remained professional others did not. The management belittled and bullied their staff, not just myself. In this environment, I dealt with unkind management personal and that's the main reason I left this establishment. The most enjoyable part of the job learning new skills that have benefit me throughout my life thus far.

Management and ownership treat employees like garbage. Always looking to replace you. Nothing you do is ever good enough. You will get a big write up for the smallest mistake like 1 min late back from your break or taking more than one washroom break per shift. Owners are rude and think they can do whatever they want to employees because they have money. There is no job security and no job advancement. If you are in management position, then you are golden.

There are too many hiring posts from this Casino because they are always looking to replace current staffs.

Do yourself a favor and do not work here!!

You will only get minimum wages and hardly no raise ever.

Staff and customers shift was early so that was good had the rest of the day minimum wage of course

Management HR terrible just terrible only work here if desperate and going to be on street last resort type deal save yourself

Most stay to themselves a lot of nice people in basic jobs higher ups too much save your time

Rush rush work like dog very stressful there is always something that has gone wrong so prepare for that

Absolute worst food and beverage management I have ever seen. Supervisors are okay but anyone above them is a joke. HR will not help you. As a student, working here was horrible because if you change your availability for school even slightly you will be penalized by completely losing shifts or having your shifts demoted until you quit. If you help them by covering shifts they will not remember that nor will they care to return the favor. Tons of favoritism used by food and beverage management. They like you until they don’t. Would not recommend working here.

Managent is absolutely amazing any issue work related or not can be talked about with management and they always make you feel seen and heard they take all matters seriously and make you feel valued and important

Tho management is amazing they can take “complaints” too seriously without real evidence of it

Very welcoming and open for the most part everyone is kind and accepting and friendly

Really enjoyed working here. The chef was great, co-workers were great, the environment was great. The ownership clearly has a problem paying employees a proper living wage and a problem with people doing their job promptly and properly. Don't work here, unless you want to work for minimum wage,  an unfair salary, or to work for an owner who clearly does not care about his employees.
